Meet your 2019 Board of Directors

Paul Portney, Membership Chair

Welcome from La Cumbre’s 2019 Membership Committee! The members of the committee are Bill Gough, Brigitte Hesper, Hol-lie Heine, Charlene Heinz, Tracy Jenkins, Karen Lehrer, Greg Moss, Dave Prichard, Ann Richards, Nancy Werner and Russ Werner. They are already hard at work getting to know prospec-tive new members, as well as current members wishing to convert from one category (Social Clubhouse or Social Tennis, say) to another (a Regular Membership, for instance). This means they meet with each and every prospective member and spouse/sig-nificant other, read the letters written by current members who are acting as sponsors of the applicants and, in some cases, acting as sponsors themselves when applicants are new to the area and don’t know anyone at the club.

To give you a quick sense of the financial importance of the Com-mittee’s duties, initiation and transfer fees are expected to account for more than 10 percent of the club’s 2019 annual budget, and these are the monies that fund capital improvements such as clubhouse upgrades, the construction of the Tennis and Fitness Center and the wonderful improvements to pool area that were made several years ago. Last year was a banner year for the sale of equity (Regular) memberships, with 25 such memberships having been purchased,

the most in 35 years. Although it’s unlikely we can duplicate that record this coming year, we’ll certainly be trying to.

Of course, the true value of new members goes well beyond their financial impact to the club. Over time they become our golf, tennis, bridge and dining partners, our valued friends, in other words. And they bring enthusiasm and new ideas to La Cumbre from their experiences in life, including from other clubs to which they may have belonged. In short, they are the lifeblood of any first-rate club.

For that reason, every member of La Cumbre should feel that they are a part of the Membership Committee. Please encour-age friends, business associates and family members to consider membership at La Cumbre. If you know of people with a possi-ble interest, please refer them to Karen Webb, our outstanding Membership Secretary. She not only gives potential applicants a tour of our facilities and answers questions they may have, but she also shepherds them expertly through the membership process should they express interest.

The members of the committee and I look forward to working with you all in 2019!

club newsOur beloved eucalyptus tree near the main entrance, likely planted sometime during the 1930’s or 1940’s, is coming to the end of a good life, despite our efforts to care for it. This beautiful specimen of a Eucalyptus tree in our parking lot has turned out to be another victim of the ongoing drought.

We noticed it starting to decline in the fall of 2017. At that time, we hired arborist, Duke McPherson, for inspection and consultation. He concluded it was due to the drought and the hydraulics of the tree not functioning properly. He also noted the location of the tree and its elevation to the surrounding grounds. Mr. McPherson suspected the tree had originally been grown on a mound and excavation had been done at the base to install the planter bed, or the tree had been planted in the planter after its construction. In either case, the situation was not ideal for the potential growth size of the tree and/or the heavy excavation around the tree had its effects on the root zone. We then started a program of heavy irrigation in the planter.

Last fall the tree showed more signs of stress. The arborist was brought back for an additional consultation. His suspi-cion was the feeder roots of the tree were in the base mate-rial under the asphalt. That combined with continued low rainfall, this area was just too dry to support the tree as the soil under the asphalt never received enough water. The tree now has die-back in the heavy wood.

This last consultation with the arborist on January 17, 2019 determined that the tree will never improve from its cur-rent condition or recover from the damage, and that it has turned into a liability for the club.

We will soon remove the tree and form a committee to fo-cus on future planning for that area of the parking lot, as well as the entirety of the parking lot.

Gaucho Coaches from 2 Eras Combine for a Winning Formula

This year’s UCSB Gaucho’s team (16-3 under 2nd year coach Joe Pasternack), is having its best season since La Cumbre’s own Jerry Pimm coached the team in the

1980’s and 90’s. If you can’t get to this season’s games in person, tune-in live and let Jerry Pimm and play-by-play announcer Gerry Fall describe all the excitement. The Gauchos are 11-0 at home and have an excel-lent chance of gaining a bid

into The NCAA Tourney in March. The telecasts are easy to find online; just go to ucsbgauchos.com then hit the Men’s Basketball link to watch all the games live (or the older games “on demand”). “Pimmer” does a great job as an analyst from a coaches perspective; making viewing the games even more enjoyable.

Sarah de Tagyos won a golfing trifecta by winning the 2018 Ace of Aces competition against 12 other Ace Day winners and ties. Sarah shot a net of 73. June Brusse and Tracy Jenkins were sec-ond and third. Nancy Falberg’s low putts of 25 earned her Putting Queen of 2018. Sarah’s net 73 was also low net for the first Ace Day of 2019, and, it also qualified her for the 2019 Ace of Aces competition. Good job, Sarah! Three wins in one golf game!

WGA Chair, Annetta Patrick, and her board are hard at work planning another year of outstanding golfing events at La Cumbre for WGA members and their guests. All event signup will utilize ForeTees on the club website.

golf newsOn Niners welcome all women golfers regardless of skill level. We meet on Friday mornings in front of the Pro Shop between 8 – 8:30 AM and usually play the back nine holes. After fin-ishing the round many will meet at the Patio Bar & Grill for a coffee and friendly conversation. New golfers interested in joining the Niners should contact Jill Winchester at [email protected] or Linda Gamble at [email protected]. The 2019 dues for the Niners’ for is $25.

Upcoming events include the first Nine & Dine of 2019, to be held Sunday, February 10 with a 2:30 PM shotgun start. The Valentine’s Day theme will be “A Love Scramble”. Deadline for sign-up is February 6th. Contact Karen Carey at [email protected] for more information.

The 2019 Ringer Tournament will begin this month. See the information posted in the ladies’ locker room. This is a fun way to keep track of your best score on each hole throughout the months that the tournament runs.

REMINDER: There are some changes to the “Rules of Golf” for 2019, all of which can be found on the USGA website. Most seem to make golf much more “user friendly”. Here is a simple one:

Taking Relief: The ball must be dropped straight down from knee height (the height of the player’s knee when in a stand-ing position). Question – Does anyone’s hand reach her knee when standing? But my favorite one follows:

Integrity: When determining a spot, point, line, area or other location under a rule, a player’s reasonable judgment will not be second guessed. Whoa! Love it!

Please send any suggestions for the next Niner Divot article to me at [email protected]. I can use all the help I can get.

The Niners’ are all about hav-ing fun on Friday mornings and I never miss a Nine and Dine on Sunday if I am in town. Those are always loads of fun! I joined the group al-most 3 years ago when my friend invited me out to play.

I had given up playing golf for many years to spend time with my 3 beautiful granddaughters. My skills had gotten a little rusty and I was a little nervous to get back out on the course. Joining the Niners’ was a great way to get back into the game. The ladies are warm and welcoming and very encouraging for all levels of play. It’s my privilege to serve such a great group of ladies as chair of the Niners.

Notable Accomplishments

The month of December was full of notable accomplishments for some of La Cumbre’s golfing Members, Congratulations to:

Hani Zeini for his hole-in-one on La Cumbre’s hole #7 on Wednesday, December 19th. Hani decided on a 9-Iron for the tee shot from the white tee to a front pin and struck it perfectly. This was Hani’s first ever hole-in-one.

Glen Wysel also struck a tee shot to perfection on hole #7. His hole-in-one came on Saturday, December 22nd. For his perfecto Glen chose a 7-Iron from the white tees. This was Glen’s 7th lifetime hole-in-one.

John Rydell found Saturday, December 22nd to be a memorable day as well. He will always remember it as the day he shot his age with a 72!

Finally, Bob Atwater joined the parade by acing La Cum-bre’s 7th hole on Sunday, December 23rd. Bob calibrated the distance and the wind and decided on a 6-Iron for his tee shot which was perfect! This was Bob’s 7th lifetime hole-in-one.

Do you need to exercise?…or MOVE?!

Last month we talked about the idea of be-havioral change and the focus on habit and behavioral development as an alternative model for goal setting instead of the standard “lose 15 pounds” goal in January.

One of the primary limitations I have seen both in research and personal experience is simply the way we THINK about movement. Not only does this come in the way we goal set (i.e. behaviors versus pounds) but in the way we think about how we prepare, train and move.

It’s been shown that about 50% of the U.S. hates exercise. Twenty-five percent is indifferent and about 25% enjoy it.

The club offers massages in the Fitness Center by ap-pointment only. Please contact Jason Barnett, LMTor Sierra Bingham, LMT to schedule (805) 687-0795.

Could that be helped, perhaps if we think about it differ-ently?

What if we:1. Allow ourselves time to get to the “Action” phase of the Transtheorectical Model of Behavior Change (shown in picture)?2. Think about movement as such: a daily Movement Program or daily Training Program.

Could it be that simple? Perhaps. A movement or training program implies there is purpose, meaning and value to what we are training for. When purpose exists, goals for change having meaning, and our mental state is ready for change…good things can happen.

Contact us at the Fitness Center to Inquire about Behavioral Goal Setting.

Court Calendar for FebruaryFebruary Tennis February for tennis players is more optimistic than January.

The first month of the year is a busy, scheduling and recovery time. The second month you “get down to it” and it always feels good. League tennis, pickleball and tournaments invite La Cumbre’s tennis players to come out and compete in that great fresh air supplied by winter time.

Coming EventsThe Men’s Club Doubles Championship, rescheduled from a rainy January, is set for Sunday morning February 9. This com-petition takes on a Valentine’s theme with the winning pair awarded a potential heartfelt gift from the tennis shop.

Pickleball and wine continues in its Saturday afternoon time slot with play set for February 19. New players are welcome to attend.

Ladies’ Interclub and men’s senior league keep their busy Wednesday morning and afternoon schedule throughout the month.

Court ScorecardLa Cumbre Country Club ladies A2 team started off the year with an impressive 4-0 victory over visiting Cathedral Oaks. The pairs of Amy Pryor-Nanette Giordano, Toni Mochi-Shel-ley Fogg, Margie Niehaus-Kathleen McLychok, Peggy Lamb-Danielle McCaffery all won matches for La Cumbre.

The club’s rapidly improving C Team split with Cathedral Oaks 2-2. Behind wins were Crissy Prichard-Sheri Copus and Rachil Vincent-Angela Maloney.

New Pickleball Class Tuesday mornings from 10:00 – 11:00 AM Starting February 12, a pickleball class for beginners will be of-fered. Advanced sign up required. Cost $25 per person. Tennis Tip for February Run through short low balls with an abbreviated back swing. Keep the back straight, with hour legs under you, letting forward momentum supply the power.

Court Reminders for February 1. Winter weather, rain and dampness can cause the courts to be wet in the back during morning hours.

2. Pickleball equipment is available in the tennis pro shop. A regular tennis court can be adapted easily for a recreational pickleball game.

3. Some great tennis apparel Valentine’s gift ideas are available in the tennis pro shop.
