Regional Forum - 9 November 2006
A Brief History
Well, we’re not quite as old as
stainless steel itself!”
Harry Brearley discovered
stainless steel in 1913
So stainless steel is 93 years old
In 1946 the Stainless Steel
Fabricators Association was
formed with just 12 members
In 1992 the scope of membership
was extended to include
producers and distributors
But no full-time staff and only
limited activities…

Regional Forum - 9 November 2006
A Brief History
In 2000 the ‘new’ BSSA was
created following consultation
with the members
The financial contributions were
increased and the first full time
Director was appointed
The Stainless Steel Advisory
Service was formed
www.bssa.org.uk established
Now 4 full-time staff together with
a small band of specialist helpers
Office located within EEF
Sheffield building
Regional Forum - 9 November 2006
Our Purpose
To promote and develop the manufacture
and use of stainless steel across the UK
And we should add: ‘to grow the value of
our members’ business in stainless steel
