Newsletter 1617 - nr 1 The first frost has been reported, all ice rinks are open, and the Swedes are preparing for the new season. In this first of approximately six newsletters: What makes Runn to such a good skating spot? An updated website; The first skating calendars; Flying or driving? 15% discount on the price of lodging; Keep up with the news on Twitter and Facebook and Skating during the X-mas holidays? Runn: the best skating spot Nothing beats skating on natural ice in the Netherlands. But that’s a bit lacking now and than. To more and more people a good reason to move to a foreign destination: Weissensee in Austria, Runn, Orsa and Östersund in Sweden and other locations such as lakes in Finland and China. All for some delicious winter sports without the crowds of skiing. And to others: a little touring in the open air. What makes Runn in Falun such a unique location? If you ask the (Dutch) visitors, the same answers keep coming back: Nature. Although there are no majestic mountains surrounding the lake, the lake has many islands and corners, making it very varied skating, while it is also quite wide and open. The peacefulness. There are no major roads or airports nearby. There are no hordes of tourists and the Swedes mainly do cross-country skiing. On the ice, it is really very quiet. Even during the Runn Winter Week, even during a brilliant weekend, even during the big tours: a few minutes of skating and the lake is almost deserted again. Outside these times you have the ice largely for yourself: one ice fisherman, a group of other skaters, a single father or mother with pram, that’s all you do come across. The ice. Nowhere to be found: so much and so often swept natural ice as the ice on Runn. Even the ice masters of other Swedish skate locations have to admit that Runn-Is (the Ice-masters of Falun) deliver the best job. Because of the breadth of the swept tracks, there are few cracks. Because of the length of the track (50 km) you do not ride the same lap many times. Additionally, the many small side branches (swept by individuals) enable a little adventuring every now and than. Reachability. It seems so far away, Sweden. But it is so easily accessible. Especially the short flight and the connecting intercity train are popular. But more and more Dutch skaters take the car. See later on in this newsletter. Updated website In recent weeks, the website has been refreshed. All the information is updated. On top of the many photos on the pages itself, the website now includes a photo album with beautiful pictures of our main purveyor: Christian Andersson. In many places you’ll find a short video to experience skating on Runn. www.NatuurijsZweden.nl To find all the information even easier: an extra page is added with frequently asked questions (FAQs). Depending on the region feb 13th till march 3rd. Attention: From feb 16th until 19th, in Falun the Scandic Cup and Intersport Cup 2017 (skiing). Accommodation is very hard to get! Flying or Driving? From Schiphol Airport you can fly SAS, KLM or Norwegian (from € 100 return). You will land at Stockholm Arlanda. Cheap flights (from € 40, but note the baggage fee: € 50). To get from this airport to Falun, renting a car is the most convenient. It’s a 260 km trip to Falun. When you do want to go via Stockholm, add another 100 km. (More information: natuurijszweden.nl/start/reis/index.html) Note: put your skates in your suitcase and NOT in your hand luggage. More and more skaters prefer to take the car. With more passengers, it is cheaper and in Sweden you have more flexibility without having to rent a car or having to wait for the bus. The mileage depends on how long you want to spend on the boat. The least seamiles you’ll get when you travel to Puttgarden, take a ferry to Denmark and travel the rest by car (over the bridge between Denmark and Sweden). Starting at Utrecht, Puttgarden is nearly 575 km. After the ferry it is another 890 km to Falun. You can drive across Denmark to Helsingor, take a very short ferry to Helsingborg after which you’ll have another 625 km to go. Would you like to spend less time in the car, consider taking an overnight ferry between Germany and Sweden. From Utrecht it is 505 km to Travemünde or 515 km to Kiel. In Travemünde take the TT-Line to Trelleborg, or Finnlines to Malmö. The next morning you have to do 714 km (Trelleborg) or 680 km (Malmö). In Kiel, take the night boat to Göthenburg. The next morning only 465 km to the skating spot. Check out the car travel page of the website (natuurijszweden.nl/start/reis/auto.html). Swedish roads are good driving in winter and usually very quiet. Winter tires are mandatory in Sweden.

This lake In late December, there usually is no snow, careful: the lakes in Sweden are fed by rivers and serious: never skate alone, use safetyequipment Falun now hase official skating guides: Outside Falun(outsidefalun.se/english/nordic%20skates.html). We touch with our photographer Christian Andersson. An active local skater who focusing on guided skating trips. These local skaters know the area, know where to skate and can always find a suitable lake. And if the weather is to bad (in terms of ice thickness): Falun is no penalty to be during your holidays ;-) It is a pleasant town, there are several museums (including an old copper mine) and you can walk beautifully in nature. In addition, there are several other small towns in the area, and a day Stockholm (eg by train) is very well doable Kind Regards, Wichert van Engelen NatuurijsZweden.nl This newsletter also for friends?
