INTRODUCTION
Have you wondered how Egyptianarchitecture looked like? If you want to find outabout their homes this is the power point for
you.
There may be other pieces of architecture
that are more amazing, but the homes are what I
find most interesting.
I will include a page each for pyramids, thesphinx and obelisks, but I am going to
concentrate on homes mostly.

PYRAMIDS Pyramids were the most grand monuments of the
Egyptians.
Pharaohs and other important figures were buriedin the chambers of the pyramids. In other words thepyramids were tombs. To protect the mummy and thetreasure inside, there were secret passage ways and
tunnels leading to a dead end. There were also traps. One of them was a hole in the dark passage way thatrobbers really fell in.
Around pyramids there were cities built for the
workers. After the pyramids were finished, the citiesstayed there.

OBELISKS
Obelisks were monuments like the pyramid but a little
less grand. Obelisks were made to tell about one persons life and
did not have any treasure inside. The only two remainingare at the entrance of the temple at Luxor and at Place De
La Concorde in France. Obelisks were large pillars with a square base and a
small pyramid on top. The pyramid represents the groundthe sun god stood on to create the universe. The obelisks
were usually 70 feet tall or taller.

THE SPHINX
The sphinx is a statue with the body of a cat and thehead of a man. It symbolizes strength and wisdom.
Many people believe it was once painted and some proofis that there are some traces of paint on an ear. Somehistorians believe that there are secret passages, rooms, andtreasure under it. So far there is no proof that it is true.
Unfortunately the Turkish shot off the nose of the sphinxfor target practice. For pictures go towww.guardians.net/egypt/sphinx.

BUILDING MATERIALS FOR HOMES
The Egyptians had a great source of bricks - the Nile River. The Nile floods every year leaving behind mud, straw, and
pebbles. The Egyptians filled molds with these materials and letthem dry to make bricks. These bricks were easy to make and
easy to transport. But they were very weak and started tocrumble after a few years.
Rich people could afford larger, stronger stone houses ,butthey were much harder to make.

LOCATION IS IMPORTANT
The homes, whether they were peasant or noble, were usually next to the Nile.
The Nile was their resource provider.
Along the river , it was a great place to have farms.
At that time, the Nile was a very importanttransportation hub (it was like an ancient highway)
All animals need water to survive. The Nile providedwater for them to drink and wash in.

THE IMPORTANT NILE
The Nile was animportant geographical placeto the Egyptians. It was theonly reason that the Egyptianslived there. It gave the peoplethe resources needed to make
the homes and to survive.
For example, to makehomes you needed mud bricksmade of mud, straw, andpebbles. All of these were
provided by the Nile when itflooded.

CARRIED OVER
The Egyptians architecture is represented in our modernworld more than you think. Have you been to Las Vegas?
In Las Vegas, Nevada, there is a pyramid-shaped casino,
(Luxor) which has hieroglyphics all over the walls and itsinside is decorated Egyptian style.
At the entrance there is one of the only 2 discoveredobelisks.

CARRIED OVER
In Washington D.C. you probably have seen
an obelisk. It is a monument of one of the most
important historical figures in the history of the
United States. The capital is also named afterhim. You guessed it. The Washington Monument
is an obelisk.

CARRIED OVER
The most interesting thing to me is thepyramid that the Japanese are planning in Tokyo
bay. It will be a huge pyramid 12 times higher
than the pyramid in Giza and will be 55 times
larger than the Egyptians 45 century old landmark. It is going to be built in the middle of Tokyobay so it will not compete for space with other
buildings. To find out more go to
