Global News: The Arab RevolutionOn December 17,

2010, a tragic event in

Tunisia was the cata-

lyst for the Tunisian

Revolution and later,

the beginnings of an

Arab Revolution. A

man named Mo-

hamed Bouazizi, a Tu-

nisian street vendor,

set himself on fire in

protest of the unjusti-

fied confiscation of his

goods and the harass-

ment and degradation

that was imposed on

him by a municipal

officer and other gov-

ernment workers. This

act became the spark

that lit the blaze of the Tunisian Revolu-

tion, starting demon-

strations and riots

throughout Tunisia in

protest of social and

political problems in

the country. Anger

and resentment built

up following Bouazizi’s

death, leading the cor-

rupt former President,

Zine El Abidine Bin Ali,

to finally step down

on January 14, 2011,

could have succumbed to the belief

that this regime and its leader were

a big, immovable object. Mr.

Ghonim was a man of the modern

world. The condition of his coun-

try —the abject poverty, the crony

economy of plunder and corruption,

the cruelties and slights handed out

to Egyptians in all walks of life by a

police state that the people had out-

grown and despaired of —had given

this young man and others like himtheir historical warrant."

In America, we often take our

rights and freedoms for granted,

while our brothers and sisters in

other countries must live under

cruel and unjust government re-

gimes. Now, these nations are rising

up for the justice, liberty and free-dom they deserve, and we should

support them. Inshallah, other im-

moral and repressive leaders of

Arab countries like Muammer

Ghaddafi, the president of Libya,

will follow in Hosni Mubarak’s sul-

len footsteps and do the same. Let’s

pray for the families who lost loved

ones in the pursuit of justice and a

better life. They will be forever re-

membered for their bravery and in-

tegrity, may Allah (SWT) have mercy

on them, Ameen. – SUNDUS JABER

after 23 years in power.

The victory of the Tunisian

protests ignited protests in

several other Arab countries, like Egypt, Yemen, Algeria,

Bahrain, and Libya .These pro-

tests included a number of

men who imitated Bouazizi’s

act in an attempt to bring an

end to their dictatorial govern-

ments. Those men and

Bouazizi are called by some

Arab commentators “heroic

martyrs of a new Middle East-

ern revolution." In reaction to

the unified protests organized

through social network sites,

like Facebook, by the brave

and innovative youth of Egypt;

the former President of Egypt,

Hosni Mubarak, has resigned. The scholar Fouad Ajami

wrote, “A young Google execu-

tive, Wael Ghonim, had ener-

gized this protest when it

might have lost heart, when it

National News: Discovery’s Final Flight and Landing in 2011

The space shuttle Discovery has returned to Earth from its final mission, never

to soar in orbit again. In the end though, Discovery flew its last mission the same

way it flew its first : with grace and pride, and the whole time people all over the world watching its

every step. The shuttle landed for the final time at NASA's Space Center at 11:57 a.m. It achieved abusy 13-day mission to the International Space Station. After 27 years and 39 flights, Discovery came

back to earth to Florida. —DUHA SALIM

Middle School

1. As people may have realized, Salam

School takes pride in its students’

achievements and recognizes them

with rewards and selective opportu-

nities. The Middle School Annual

Science Camp is a perfect example

of ways for them to be motivated.

They got a chance to be in the great

outdoors and engage in fun activi-

ties. Mrs. Mann is known for her

great job at organizing this fun-filled

trip. But, this year instead of the tra-

ditional Devil’s Lake, they have relo-

cated to Point Beach State Forest for

new adventures!

2. Volley Ball is back with another sea-

son for our middle school girls. Sign

up with your friends and practice

with people on your skill level and a

great instructor. Meetings are after

school on Tuesdays and Fridays for

Varsity teams and Mondays and

Thursdays for JV. There is also Vol-

leyball Adventures for younger chil-

dren on Wednesday for them to

start with basic skill sessions. Moth-ers are welcome to come help out

and encourage the girls in their

strive to exercise.

Elementary School

1. Scouts: Salam School has joined the

Boy and Girl Scouts of America. The cub

scouts in our elementary school have

good time!

2. The Salam School Picnic is a pro-

trip to the school year. Our Salam

Staff wants to provide this chance

for all students to get more active

at a neighboring park and feel the

Highlights of the Year!

Spirit Week

Every year, if our Basketball Team makes it

to the Padre Serra, as you know we hold aSpirit Week, and this year’s was, in my opinion,

the greatest.

It all kicked off on Monday February 28th

,

2011. The majority of our building’s students

showed up in their sporty gear, being very

creative about it. On Tuesday, students came

dressed up as their favorite character. All

around the building you could see SteveUrkels, Bunnies, Michael Jackson, and Harry

Potter characters.

On Wednesday, it was twin day, but not

only two people showed up in matching cloth-

ing; there were triplets, quads, and even quin-

tuplets! People were matching right down to

the socks they wore . Some girls even matched

the headbands they put over their hijab. On

Thursday, it was Fashion Disaster Day, and stu-dents really took it to heart, if you know what I

mean. People came dressed up in the wacki-

est, most-mismatched clothing you could think

of; it really showed our outstanding school

spirit! Thursday was the day we had a messy

cracker eating contest and jalapeno eating con-

test. It was quite enjoyable to watch and cheer

for your friends!

Friday was the big day, the day everyone

was waiting for… The day of the PEP RALLY!!

Students had the choice to come in either Luau

themed clothing or the color assigned to their

class. For example, seniors had special black

and white shirts .

After Salah, stu-

dents came down to

the gym to watch

the Pep Rally,

which was bigger

and better than ever. It started

with a surprise when the male teachers

walked into the gym wearing grass skirts and started to

hula dance; that was led by Mr. Simone. After that, each

grade had its own game to play. Some were super messy

(the seniors’ “Go Bananas”) and some were stomach fill-ing (the sophomores’ Peanut Butter Sandwich Eating Con-

test) and some were just plain entertaining (the teacher/

student Coconut Run), but all-in-all it was a great day.

Salam School’s 4th

Annual Sprit Week was greater

than I could have ever imagined, and I'm sure that I'm not

the only one when I say that I will forever remember it as

the highlight of my 2011 school year. Special Thanks to Sr.

Lorri and Mohamed Abdelrahim for doing an unbelievablyspectacular job at being two of the three planners of this

week-long event; it wouldn’t have been anything without

you guys! - MIRIAM JABER

“Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran in order that you may under-

stand” (12:2)

Every year we at Salam School dedicate a day to the Arabic language and culture. But do we

really know the importance and significance of the Arabic language?

Arabic is essential for any Muslim. It is the language of the Quran and the people of heaven.

You may not notice but you use it on a daily basis. It is used when you perform your daily prayers

and when you carry out other rituals such as dhikr and tasbeeh. In general there is a great relation-

ship between Islam and Arabic. Islam has preserved the Arabic language and honored it. All of this

had been mentioned on Arabic day. The teachers and childrendedicated long hours to making this day special, and this year

they did just that.

The Arabic culture is very diverse, having traditions and cus-

toms differing as you move from country to country. The theme

for this year’s Arabic day was hospitality and generosity, for

which the Arabs are well known. Elements from all the countries

of the Arab world were portrayed in the program, moving across

the map from Syria down to Egypt and all the way to Morocco.

This year’s Arabic Day held at the elementary school was very successful. The children per-

formed songs that recited the Arabic alphabet, traditional folk dances and showed many different

ways the Arabs show hospitality. One of the performances, for example, portrayed the way the

women in the Libyan culture hold a party for the bride before the wedding. The audience watched in

amusement as the little girls danced around the “bride” who was dressed in a traditional silk gown

and shawl. They showed how the bride’s hands were decorated with henna, making beautiful art.

The high school boys did a similar performance when they showed how the men honor the

groom. They sang and danced to the drum as the students and parents watched attentively. The

middle and high school Arabic Day had different events and shows. The students prepared multiple

short movies that portrayed hospitality and the way a person honors their guests.

Both Arabic Days were very successful. Everyone left the programs happy and satisfied. The

great effort that the teachers and students put into this day shined through and will not be forgot-

ten, for it was a very memorable event.

Student CouncilVision: Salam School Student Council seeks to become and remain the foremost, most active, largest student

body at Salam School. It seeks to become the indispensable part of the Salam School experience, working as

the bridge between students, teachers, and the administration.

Mission: Salam School Student Council aims to represent and serve the students cooperating with teachers

and the administration to make Salam School an enjoyable, beneficial learning experience.

The Salam School Student Council plays a significant role in the school and helps share the ideas,

concerns and interests of the students with the school’s administration. They are the voice for the student

body and represent them at large. Their main purpose is to demonstrate morality and leadership in democ-

ratic means and to find a way to get students to be more active in school and society.

They help raise funds for school wide projects and assist communities and even countries when they

are in need of aid. Last year they planned and sponsored a school activity for the people of Haiti who were

victims of a very severe Earthquake which killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. Within a week they

raised over $1,000.00 with the help and effort of this year’s sophomore class.

The Student Council seeks to partner with the National Honors Society as the school’s most elite or-

ganizations to carry out service and projects not only within our Islamic community, but our society as well.

They are encouraging each and every Salam School student to bring to them any questions, opinions and

concerns you may have so we can make Salam School better and

enjoyable for all of us.

True Grit is a remake of

the 1969 western of the

same name. The film stars

the 14-year-old Hailee

Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, a

girl who sets out to

avenge the death of herfather by confronting his

killer- - a hired hand

named Tom Chaney

(played by Josh Brolin).

She seeks the assistance

of Reuben J. “Rooster”

Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), aseemingly gruff and apa-

thetic U.S marshal. Along

the way, they are joined

by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf

(Matt Damon), who has

been on the trail of

Chaney for months. Thestory itself is by no means

groundbreaking -- the

characters are what really

shine. The actors portray

them in ways that actually

make you care what happens next, if you’re willing

to follow the dialogue. That’s basically what de-

cides if you’ll enjoy this movie or not— there’s a

fair amount of conversation, and if you’re looking

for a mindless action flick, you may be disap-

pointed. Not to say True Grit is devoid of action.

The scenes that do contain action are great at grab-

bing your attention, and because the film does not

desensitize you with constant shootouts and explo-

sions, those scenes matter and are genuinely excit-

ing. There are definitely people who will not appre-

ciate True Grit , but if you approach it with the right

state of mind and give it your attention, it could

easily turn out to be one of your favorite movies of

the year. It deserves a 4 out of 5 stars , at the veryleast.- KHALIL HAMOUDEH

What force and strength

can not get through,

I with a gentle touch can do,

and many in the streets would stand,

were I not as a friend in hand. A Key!

The more of them you take, the more youleave behind. What are they? Footsteps!

It lives without a body, hears without ears,

speaks without a mouth, and is born in air.

What is it? An Echo!

What is that you will break every time you

name it?

Silence!

I am the beginning of sorrow, and the end

of sickness. You cannot express happiness

without me, yet I am in the midst of

crosses. I am always in risk, yet never in

danger. You may find me in the sun, but I

am never seen out of darkness. The Letter

S!

What flies without wings? Time!

What am I? I am the only thing that always

tells the truth. I show off everything that I

see. I come in all shapes and sizes. So tell

me what I must be! A Mirror!

Here on earth it is always true,

that a day follows a day.

But there is a place where yesterday

always follows today!

What am I ? A Dictionary !
