FRESH from his recent tilts at the Bold Trease Carnival Cup (Sandown) and the Summer Cup in Sydney, both at Group level, Granduer was all the rage to eclipse a seemingly easier event, the Aberdeen Paper Merchants Mixed 4th/5th Grade at The Meadows last Saturday night. From the three alley in a field com-prising six rivals, Granduer sent out a short-priced $1.30 favourite, with the only other two given a chance being Kinga Will ($6.40) and Miss Vixen at $6.80. Back to where his racing began 12 months ago, the Yuroke kennelled racer isn’t possessed with too much early pace, so for him to be third, five lengths behind the pacesetting My Secret Shiraz and Karanji a lap out was a bonus for the brin-dle dog’s supporters. My Secret Shiraz maintained a solid pace down the back and reached the next checkpoint in 29.90 but was then checked by Karanji, Another collision, this time with Lara-bella, stopped My Secret Shiaz in her tracks, and Granduer zoomed past. Off and gone with the prize, the son of Mogambo and Off Springer saluted the judge 10½ lengths ahead of Adelle Bale, who had been midfield but enjoyed the rails run rounding the home turn, while Karanji wound up third, a further four lengths astern. Of the other well fancied runners in

the 725 metres race, Kinga Will and Miss Vixen were their own worst enemies early and always held rearward positions, fin-ishing sixth and fifth respectively. Raced by Charlie Bates of Top Cat Video, who provides the coverage of the meeting for Sky Channel, it was the sec-ond half-mile victory after five attempts at the Northcorp Boulevard track for Gran-duer, who recorded 42.61, whilst career-wise he’s racked-up 12 victories and 12 placings from 35 starts.

BOOKIES SUFFERED again in the last leg of the TAB Quaddie, the Super-man at Stud Damsels Dash final over 525 metres, in which only two runners were backed.

Proven Impala from the rails draw was the heavily supported $1.80 favour-ite, whilst in box three was Queen Of Cyprus ($4.20), and they were the only runners under double figures.

Beginning smartly, Proven Impala was quickly in charge, while Queen Of Cyprus settled fourth after a slow start.

Having clocked a smart 5..06 to eas-ily lead Amado and Stetson Lily around the initial corner, Proven Impala really stoked the coal as they traversed the back straight, putting five lengths on Amado to pause the timer at 17.82, while the hard railing Brynne Bale was putting it into top gear.

For those on Queen Of Cyprus, she

copped a nasty check going past the 715 metres boxes that ended her aspirations of success.

But rounding the final bend Proven Impala was travelling far too well and went on to score by six lengths in 30.07 on a track that had copped plenty of rain just prior to the opening race.

Brynne Bale has stacks of talent and being beaten by such a margin doesn’t detract from her effort to finish second, while it was a length and three quarters to Galaxy High, who snared the skinny end of the prize.

Joe Borg prepares Proven Impala at Maryborough for Greyhound Adoption Program identity, Larissa Darragh, while the black daughter of Velocette and Thanks Blue has won five of her 15 starts.

For being suitably qualified, connec-tions picked up a $2,400 GOBIS Bonus plus the $10,000 winner’s cheque. Hats off to Pete REWARDED for his hours behind the wheel when getting his greyhounds bear-ing the “Stetson” prefix to and from The Meadows, Finley based Peter Dundon’s went from winning a Maiden Final the previous Saturday to taking out the Top Cat Video Grade 5 at the Broadmeadows venue last weekend with Stetson Donna. Again over the 525 metres on a track that was holding plenty of water following a storm, Stetson Donna exited the five trap swiftly to lead at the post the first time in 5.12, with Barbara Bale and Dark Hero in tow. Stetson Donna ($4.60) extended her advantage along thew back, arriving at the ext checkpoint in 17.97 over three lengths clear of Barbara Bale and Dark Hero, who kept the leader on her game plan. Travelling far too well for her rivals, it was a hat-trick of Meadows wins for the daughter of Premier Style and Silent Flower, who saluted the judge seven lengths clear of Dark Hero ($6.70), while

third placed Barbara Bale ($6.50) finished hot on their heels. A perfect record at the track, her only career victories, this latest was completed in a new PB 30.26 and Stetson Donna has taken home $13,325 to date. Twister time WE SAW AGAIN just two runners carry the bulk of turnover in a race when Shanlyn Peanut was sent out the $2.90 popular elect, while Ucme Typhoon was next best at $3.10. Shanlyn Peanut handled the jump best and showed the way over Ucme Typhoon through the splits in 9.01 and 22.26, with two lengths splitting them coming off the back. In what turned out to be an interest-ing match of talent, it took most of the 600 metres for Ucme Typhoon to reach the leader.

In the end, the Rob Britton prepared red fawn chaser came away to score by one and a half lengths in 35.13, while Uncle Pete ($5.20) railed home for third, two and a half lengths adrift.

From 13 starts, Ucme Typhoon has registered four wins and five placings, and raced three times for two wins at The Meadows middle distance journey. Santa’s visit THIS SATURDAY’S MEETING at The Meadows will feature a visit by Santa, so bring the kids along and whilst they’re busy with the bearded bloke, the Silver Chief heats will be in action. I wonder what mode of transport Santa will adopt this year, as judging by his past performances, I’m not sure that he’s really suited to tractor transport.

- Allan Hawkswell

Granduer, who holds the track record at Ballarat and has won over all three distances at The Meadows, was a short-priced favourite in a Mixed 4th/5th Grade at the Northcorp Boulevard track last Saturday night. Pictured with the brindle chaser (L-R) are trainer, Len Ketelaar, with Rose, Julie and Charlie Bates, whilst their avid chaser ran 42.61 and scored by 10½ lengths.

Proven Impala came in for plenty of support before landing the Superman Damsels Dash final in a smart 30.07 for owner, Larissa Darragh and Maryborough mentor, Joe Borg at The Meadows.

WAYNE MUSGRAVE knows what a good dog is.

He’s been in greyhound racing for decades and has raced some pretty smart gallopers, such as former Al-bion Park track record holder, Shio-kaze and National Sprint third, Tomb-stone Jack.

So when he said to his great mate, Jimmy Cullinane and his nephew, Greg Chalk that he would get them a good dog, he meant it.

Last Thursday night at Albion Park, that “good dog”, Ultra Cool landed a 520 metres Novice for trainer, Tony Apap.

Jimmy says he was “threatened” into greyhound racing a couple of years ago by Wayne.

Ultra Cool (Big Daddy Cool - Ultra Swift) scored by a head over the fast finishing Master Brutus, with a half length to thi rd placed Blue Caviar.

“I bought her as a pup from Terry Hines, who bred the litter,” said Wayne.

“I’ve known Jimmy for years through Norths Rugby League Club.

Jimmy was President of Norths Juniors.

“I threatened him that he had to come into this syndicate.”

Jimmy was all smiles after the victory, as Ultra Cool had to do it tough around the leader in the back straight but always looked likely to win.

“I wanted to boys to come into this syndicate,” said Wayne.

“Terry had only two pups left for sale and I picked out this black bitch.”

“She was reared at Jedi Kennels

and broke-in with good reports at Postman’s Ridge.”

“I asked Tony to train the bitch for us. It’s the first dog he has had for me.” “I’m happy we've got a good one first-up for Jimmy and Greg, who are both first time owners.”

Apap said the bitch was not suited by the soft going at Albion Park last Thursday night but still won.

“She’s much better when the track is fast,” he said.

It was the second win in five starts for Ultra Cool, who ran 31.04 on the slow track.

That man Bate GRAEME BATE is used to winning feature races everywhere around the nation.

He had a big night at Hobart last Thursday night, and did the same at Albion Park when Stack ’Em Flat got up in the last stride to win a heat of the Big Dog Challenge. Stack ’Em Flat (Bombastic Shi-raz - Bar Crusher) scored by a half head over tearaway leader, Mentawai, with three quarters of a length to Noir Warrior third. Bate left Stack ’Em Flat in Queensland with local trainer, Tom Tzouvelis for this series. “Graeme told me to give him an

easy week after his second to Iso Oc-tane here last week,” said Tom after the victory in the heat last week. “We’ll get into him this week for the final.” Stack ’Em Flat loomed large in the back straight but seemed to take for-ever to run down Mentawai on the line. “Maybe he didn’t appreciate the soft track,” said Tzouvelis. “I thought where he was in the back straight he was going to win easily.” He said the dog was slightly down in weight for the heat and he’d make sure he was right for this

week’s final. “He’s a big dog and it shouldn’t really worry him, but maybe it has. We’ll keep him spot-on this week.”         Stack ’Em Flat has now won 32 races in 72 starts.

Pure, says Darren PURE ADRENALIN is being aimed at a feature middle distance race at Gosford around Christmas time.

But firstly he has Thursday night’s Big Dog Challenge final to deal with.

The son of Made To Size and Jukebox Jessie sat wide throughout

but ground out a victory in a heat of the 600 metres Big Dog Challenge at Albion Park last Thursday night, downing Isadel by three quarters of a length, with a head to Metz Magic third.

For Pure Adrenalin it was his 17th victory in 66 starts.

Darren Russell trains Pure Adrenalin for Jason Phillips, and a year ago it was thought the dog’s race career was finished when he damaged a stopper bone.

Darren’s mum, Maureen reck-oned the Big Dog Challenge heat vic-tory was further proof of what a great behind-the-scenes job she does around the kennels at Innisplain (near Beaudesert).

Whi ls t Dar ren grabs a l l the limelight for bringing Pure Adrenalin back, it was Maureen who did most of the work in helping the dog get over the injury.

“Darren has his few days away from the kennels from time to time, but mum makes sure everything con-tinues to run smoothly,” said his fa-ther, Barry. Pure Adrenalin, boxed beautifully in the seven, sat outside early leader, Isadel and forged to the front on the home turn. Favourite, Metz Magic got into fourth along the back straight, and whilst he loomed large on the home turn, he had his chance to run down the leaders. Pure Adrenalin ran 35.41 on the soft track. “He’s just a great dog,” said Darren. “There is a nice race on for him at Gosford during the Gosford Gold Cup series that occurs at the end of December.” “The dog is always suited to a new track and will be hard to beat in a race like that.”

Ultra Cool fulfilled his obligations of being a “good dog” for Wayne Musgrave by taking out a Novice at Albion Park last Thursday night, running the 520 metres trip in 30.72.

Graeme Bate sent Stack ’Em Flat to Queensland for the Big Dog Challenge series, and the Bruce Lellman owned racer took every bit of the 600 metres trip to beat Mentawai in 35.71, while Noir Warrior ran third ahead of Ronray Reward and Super Surfer.

Darren Russell with Pure Adrenalin ran 35.41 to annex a 600 metres Big Dog Challenge heat, but bigger plans are being hatched for a southern excursion around Christmas time.

MELBOURNE CUP WINNER, Dyna Tron powered his way into the Group 1 Aceland Stud Hobart Thousand final with a brilliant heat win at his first look at the Tattersall's Park track last Thursday night.

The Andrea Dailly trained dog produced great splits of 5.07 and then 10.97 before storming up the home straight to clock a slick 25.78 to be-come the equal fastest of the eight heat winners.

Given that the dog had not trialled on the circuit and only arrived in the state the day of the race, it was a sen-sational effort, and he would only have to mirror that performance to take out his second Group 1 final in the space of a month.

Dyna Tron won the Melbourne Cup at Sandown on November 17 and at his next assignment travelled to Queensland, where he won a heat of the Brisbane Gold Cup, only to be run down by Glen Gallon in the final.

The dog's trainer was not track-side but her husband, Tom Dailly, who is looking after the dog for his Tasma-nian assignment, said the dog can improve some on his first look at the U-bend track.

“This dog has hit a purple patch in the last six weeks and he's absolutely flying,” Dailly said.

“I was a bit worried because of the Bramich lure system they use here in Hobart, but he came out humming tonight, so I'm not too concerned about it (lure) now,” he said.

‘TEAM DAILLY’ will also be repre-sented in the Thousand final by Dyna Tron’s litter brother, Dyna Bert (Collision - Gold Rush Bale), who scored a four lengths win over Portrait Ignites in the last of the eight heats.

Dyna Bert led all the way in a time of 25.85, suggesting he also rates highly in the final that offers a purse of $75,000 to the winner.

“Dyna Bert has been very consis-tent and his heat win was terrific, so it's nice to be going into a Group 1 final with two live chances,” he said.

THE ONLY other interstate dog to make it through to the final was the Graeme Bate trained David Bale, who fell in, scoring by a head over the Mick Stringer trained Wandy Neg, who was very unlucky not to give Stringer two finalists.

David Bale made the most of the inside box to share the lead with Miss Roman Nose until well into the straight.

He then had to stave-off a late charge from Wandy Neg, who had to ease off heels in the home straight to make his run.

David Bale ran the 461 metres trip

in 26.23, which was pedestrian com-pared to the times recorded by both of Dailly’s finalists.

THE BEST performed of the five local stars to make it to the final was Rewind, who matched Dyna Tron’s times.

Rewind, from the Morrie Strick-land kennel, sizzled out of box one and rattled-off a first split of 5.04 (Best) and he then reeled-off a second split of 10.97, which mirrored that of Dyna Tron.

Rewind’s run-home was a fraction slower than Dyna Tron, but their over-all times were the same.

Strickland was delighted with his dog’s effort, saying the Hobart Thou-sand has been the dog’s target for some time.

“He went to Melbourne and raced there for about three months with Dar-ren McDonald, but our long-range plan was always to set him for the Hobart Thousand,” Strickland said.

“We brought him back to Tassie a bit later than we wanted to originally, but he's done the job tonight and I’m rapt,” he said.

Rewind has an exceptional record on the Hobart track, with this latest win being his seventh from nine tries and he was placed second at his other two attempts, all over 461 metres.

“The dog loves this U-turn track, and as long as he can begin like he did tonight, he will keep them honest in the final.”

Strickland has yearned to win the race.

He believes that Rewind is his best, and maybe his last chance to win the time honoured event.

CLYDE’S ANGEL, prepared at Rowella by Terry Penny, made her way into the final with a vert classy winning effort.

Clyde’s Angel began well from box eight but had to work three-w-de until she hit the top turn, where she crossed to the rail and then went on to win by over five lengths from the con-sistent Innisfree Miss.

MICK STRINGER knows what it takes to win a Hobart Thousand, hav-ing been successful with Little Span-iard three years ago, and he helped prepare Prankster to win the race the following year with top Victorian trainer, Robert Britton.

Stringer’s kennel star, Berger-meister won his way into the Thou-sand final with an impressive heat win.

The Hobart track record holder showed great courage to win a heat, as he was bustled and bumped most of the way to the top turn.

But he sped clear and went on to win by almost two lengths from I’m A Fencer, with the Graeme Bate trained Shereen Bale a length and a half away third.

Bergermeister suffered a near career-threatening injury when he crashed through a gate at Stringer’s training complex earlier this year.

The dog was nursed back to health and until a week before the Thousand heats Stringer was unsure if the dog would find his old sparkle.

But he won the Barry Heawood Hobart Thousand Prelude two weeks ago, convincing his trainer that the dog was back on track for a serious tilt at Tasmania’s only Group 1 race.

IT’S BEEN a while since David Crosswell has had a runner in the Thousand but he has a live chance in the final with Galtee Again, who was very impressive in winning a heat.

Galtee Again began well from box eight but was unable to match it with the speedy Radley Bale and New Recruit, who matched motors to the top turn.

But Galtee Again was able to muster speed and crossed them at the top turn then went on to score by al-most a length from this year’s Golden Easter Egg winner, Radley Bale, with New Recruit over two lengths away third.

Galtee Again stopped the clock at 26.05, which was a new personal best for the dog that has won five from 11 on the Hobart track.

BRIGHTON trainer, Ted Medhurst prepared Sandbanker to win a heat, much to the chagrin of punters, who unloaded on Damek and sent him around the $1.50 favourite.

Sandbanker showed good early speed to be camped just off the pace-makers Damek (4) and Penny's Angel (1), who engaged in a bumping duel all the way to the home turn.

Damek was check and was spat out to last, while Penny’s Angel sped clear.

But she was sitting duck for Sand-banker, whot ran home strongly to win by almost a length from Penny’s An-gel.

Medhurst was thrilled with the dog’s performance.

“This dog has come a long way in a short space of time,” Medhurst said.

“He has gone from a Maiden to getting into a Group 1 final in the apace of 15 starts, so he has definitely done a great job.”

Dyna Tron, who has already won the Geelong Cup and Melbourne Cup, looks set to take out another “black type” race when he lines-up in the Hobart Thousand on Thursday.

Rewind is the best of the local chasers, having recorded a new PB 25.78 for Morrie Strickland in a Hobart Thousand heat.

Clyde’s Angel with trainer, Terry Penny after the local star had won a Hobart Thousand heat in 26.16.

Sandbanker, prepared by Ted Medhurst, clocked 26.51 in a heat last week.

AT WENTWORTH PARK last Sat-urday night the popular Christmas Gift series was kick-started and Syd-ney’s number one sprinter, Fancy Dean recorded his 15th victory at the famous venue, clocking the quickest time of 29.69. The son of Where’s Pedro was widely tipped to be the night’s “Best Bet”, and at no stage did the 35kg chaser ever cause concern for his sup-porters. When the lids rose, Fancy Dean was well away from the rails box, and along with Chenzhou Boy from the three, they charged together towards the first corner.

Holding the fence, Fancy Dean got away from Chenzhou Boy enter-ing the back, while Gable Drum and Midnight Capers had worked into open space to give chase. It was obvious that Fancy Dean was running fast off the back, and the quality chasers were not in the hunt of picking up the Wally Lutiger trained chaser when they came down the side. Turning for home Fancy Dean was clear, with Gable Drum down the outside.

Passing the judge, Fancy Dean was a dominant six and three quarter lengths winner over Gable Drum, while Midnight Capers was one and a quarter lengths away third. Fancy Dean, a January 2009 whelp out of Sweet Fancy, overall has had 42 career starts for 22 wins and 15 placings.

Gable Drum (Gable Lafourche x Tiu Lid), trained by Charlie Lamb, has produced 11 wins and eight plac-ings from 27 career starts, whilst Midnight Capers (Collision x Mid-night Movie) has had notched five wins and four placings from 10 starts for trainer, David Pringle.

ONE OF the most exciting con-tests seen at headquarters for some time was in another heat, as Noble Pedro overpowered Undisputed Dos in the closing stages. When the lids lifted it was Undis-puted Dos that speared out of box six and veered hard left, thus bunching the inside division.

Pushing along the fence, the red vested Noble Pedro angled off the fence and on the first corner extri-cated himself into the clear and gave chase to Undisputed Dos, who had broken away. Undisputed Dos led them off the back, with Noble Pedro warming up, but the leader still travelled well to the home turn.

On the final bend Undisputed Dos still had a kick, and with the aid of the fence, looked to have had Noble Pedro’s measure.

However, the bold striding white and brindle boy really came hard in the closing stages. In the shadows of the post Noble Pedro swamped Undisputed Dos, going on to score by a neck, while Bogie Beltah finished third, a further six and three quarter lengths away. In winning his seventh race at the track Noble Pedro clocked 29.86.

Trained by Mary Wright, the son of Where’s Pedro and Miss Beeslee made it 39 starts to date that have yielded 20 wins and eight placings.

Undisputed Dos (Pure Octane x Dos Santos), trained by Andy Lord,

has had raced on 57 occasions for 21 wins and 20 placings, whilst Ryan Ayre’s Bogie Beltah (Collision x Bo-gie Skye) has had 41 starts for 12 wins and 25 placings.

IT HAS BEEN nearly four

months since Oaks Road grabbed a win, but the Mark Gatt trained sprinter returned to his home track for a strong 30.05 victory last weekend. After racing in a prominent posi-tion throughout, Oaks Road finished the 520 metres off determinedly, de-feating Devine Law and God Star.

Boxrise saw God Star exit box two fast with Oaks Road alongside him, while Devine Law was moving up three deep in the yellow vest. Leaving the straight, God Star took up the front running role, with Devine Law deeper out and Oaks Road waiting to pounce.

That trio bunched heading down the side, with Devine Law moving up and just getting to the front, however, Oaks Road got the split, quickly dashed to the front.

Owned by Eddie Kingswell, the black dog raced away and registered a two and a quarter lengths win over Devine Law, with God Star third, a half length back. Oaks Road, by Spiral Nikita from Leprechaun Pace, has faced the starter 30 times for nine wins and 14 plac-ings.

Devine Law (Collision x Majestic Rush), trained by Pat Parelli, has had 27 career starts for eight wins and 11 placings, whilst the Ruth King trained God Star (Collision x Toe Line) after 75 career starts has amassed 19 wins and 21 placings.

A MINOR BOILOVER eventu-ated in the final heat when the Owen Makin trained Street Boss put his best

paws forward and eliminated some fancied rivals in the time of 30.23. When the lids opened Street Boss was well away from box two and crossed Gundabooka.

Prince Diablo was slowly away and got cramped for room, as too did Bogie King and Adam Meway from box eight, who was moving down the outside. Leaving the straight Street Boss kicked clear of Bogie King heading to the back, while the rest got well off the pace.

Street Boss had run time in a pre-vious win, so the others knew they had their work cut out, and nearing the home turn the leader was set for victory. Street Boss went strongly to the post, defeating Bogie King by two and a quarter lengths, with Gund-abooka occupying third spot, one and a quarter lengths away. Street Boss, who is by Bombastic Shiraz out of Fancy Smile, to date has had 37 career starts for 12 wins and 11 placings.

Ryan Ayre’s Bogie King (Collision x Bogie Skye) has pro-duced 18 wins and 17 placings from 43 career starts, whilst Gundabooka (Brett Lee x Kiacatoo Pearl), trained by David Pringle, has had 10 starts for six wins and one placing. SELECTIONS 8 OAKS ROAD 3 Fancy Dean 1 Street Boss 7 Undisputed Dos

Outpaced early by Chenzhou Boy, Fancy Dean clocked a fast 29,69 to land a Christmas Gift heat at Wentworth Park last Saturday night for trainer, Wally Lutiger.

Class act: Oaks Road powers past the post well clear of his rivals in a Christmas Gift heat, running Wentworth Park’s 520 metres trip in 30.04 for Mark Gatt.

Street Boss led all the way and scored a nice 29.99 win in a Christmas Gift heat at Wentworth Park for South Coast trainer, Owen Makin.

Prepared by Mary Wright, Noble Pedro notched his 20 career victory by defeating Undisputed Dos (6) narrowly in a 520 metres Christmas Gift in Sydney last weekend.

After a checkered passage in transit, the Jason Mackay trained Usah Shiraz came from last, ran 30.00 and won a 4th Grade in runaway fashion.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S feature last week was at Betchoice Gardens, where the main attraction was the 2011 Woy Woy Poultry St Leger final. On a very wet night there was a minor upset victory by the Charlie Lamb trained Gable Drum, who was too strong at the finish, defeating a determined Sure As, along with one of the popular picks, Zipping Catra taking home the minor prize. As the top field arrived at the 515 metres boxes, punters were having trouble splitting General Trigga and Zipping Carta for favouritism, whilst there was good support for Lochinvar Manolo. Boxrise saw the white vested Splash About best to begin, with General Trigga and Aqua Jack both pushing up.

Coming across them was Sure As but the field was quite bunched head-ing into the first corner.

Getting the best of the luck was Splash About, who broke away to lead Sure As and Gable Drum, who moved into third spot as they headed to the back. Off the top bend Splash About still led but Sure As was starting to ‘lift’ and looked to be a threat as they went down the side.

Gable Drum was still in striking distance, but it was Sure As that

rolled to the front approaching the home bend. Sure As turned in front, with Ga-ble Drum pulling wide and warming to the task.

In the shadows of the post Gable Drum collared Sure As, who tried to kick back but to no avail.

Gable Drum held on to win by a half length over Sure As, with Zip-ping Catra running on into third place, a further one and a half lengths away. In winning his fourth race at the Newcastle venue, the son of Gable Lafourche clocked 29.91. Gable Drum (x Tiu Lid), who paid an unbelievable $14.10 on the NSW TAB, in 26 starts has had 11 wins and seven placings.

Sure As (Bombastic Shiraz x Winsome Bluebird), prepared by Syd Swain, has raced on 23 occasions for nine wins and five placings, whilst Zipping Catra (Malfoy x Or Catra) has acquired six wins and five plac-ings from 15 career starts for trainer, Jason Mackay.

VETERAN TRAINER, Ken Cheetham has featured on plenty of major nights at his local track over the past few years, and last Wednes-day was no exception, as That’s A Miracle proved far too strong in the Multicam Systems Stake over 515 metres.

Exiting box six, Wanted Felon jumped best before That’s A Miracle from box three was able to push past by the first turn. After Driving to the front, That’s A Miracle pulled away from Wanted Felon, and the leader travelled well into the back straight.

Coming down the side That’s A Miracle stepped into overdrive and got right away, and of the remainder only Blazing Wok was making ground. Turning for home That’s A Mira-cle was travelling powerfully, and with no challengers in sight he raced comfortably to the line, recording a four and a half lengths win over Blaz-ing Wok in 30.25, with Future Leg-end a half head away third. That’s A Miracle is from a No-vember 2009 litter of Big Daddy Cool and No Naggin’ Nanna, who’s produced two wins and four placings from eight starts. Blazing Wok (Over Flo x Jamba-laya), trained by Jeanette Roche, has had 19 starts for one win and five placings, whilst the Arthur Arm-strong prepared Future Legend (Bombastic Shiraz x Buena Blaze) has netted a win and four placings from 12 starts.

In his honour PRINCIPAL of Woy Woy Poultry, Laurie Refalo had a race named after him, and victory went to the Jason Mackay trained McElle, who made it seven wins on the trot. Exiting box three, McElle bounced straight to the front, with Modern Image and Splendourous settling down just behind the front runner.

McElle was clocking slick sec-tions, which kept the immediate chas-ers at bay, and they never really looked likely to rein-in the lamp-lighter. McElle turned for home in front and down the straight did enough to win by one and a half lengths over Splendourous in 29.,83, with Modern Image a length away third. McElle, who is is by Collision

out of Elle McState, and to date has had 14 lifetime outings for 10 wins and three placings.

Splendourous (Collision x Splen-dour), trained by Lorraine Atchison, has had 22 career starts for five wins and four placings, whilst the Sue McDermott prepared Modern Image (Collision x Pasha Appeal) has con-tested 16 races for four wins and seven placings.

Charlie and Lisa Lamb with Gable Drum, who thundered home to score a very strong 29.91 win in the Woy Woy Poultry St. Leger at The Gardens last week. A son of Gable Lafourche and Tiu Lid, Gable Drum won three straight at Wentworth Park mid-year before finding heaps of trouble in the Vic Peters final. The red and fawn sprinter gradually found his best form after five defeats in November with an encouraging Best Of Night placing in the St. Leger heats.

EMMA’S GIFT upstaged his more favoured rivals at Angle Park last Thursday night when he scored a strong victory in the Weddings & Functions @ Chasers Free For All for trainer, Ken Gill. Poorly drawn in box six and sent out a $10.00 chance behind popular pick, Point Two Over ($3.50), Emma’s Gift made his own luck early by jumping safely and accelerating quickly to cross the field and hold the early lead over Led Zeppelin through the first turn. Showing the way by three lengths over Where’s Pancho in the back straight, Emma’s Gift was setting a hot pace out in front and extended his break to five lengths at the top turn. Rounding the final bend with the race firmly in his keeping, Emma’s Gift coasted to the line in no danger of defeat.

Although the fast finishing Point Two Over retrieved some ground in the run-home, the son of Elite State and I Love Lucy crossed the line two and a quarter lengths clear in 30.17, with Gypsy Spy making good ground to grab third place. It was the 21st victory with 26 placings for Emma’s Gift, who’s raced 67 times, and his fifthh win on the track.

Jumping Jess ONLY JESS brought up her sec-ond successive win at Angle Park last Thursday night when she took out the grsa.com.au Grade 4 for trainer, Angela Modra. Sporting the yellow vest and a $9.00 chance behind race favour-ite, Ruarc Entity ($2.20), Only Jess jumped slowly and made the most of her luck by railing through to third behind Shez Ro-mantic as they jammed going through the first turn. Trailing the leader by five lengths entering the back straight, Only Jess started a strong run on the fence, getting to second and only two lengths behind the leader at the top turn. Swooping to a clear lead through the final bend, with Trip-ping Cowboy following through into second place, Only Jess fin-ished the race full of running.

Powering away, the daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Brooklyn Rain scored by nearly five lengths to Tripping Cowboy in 30.25, with Ruarc Entity making late in third place.

Top Dog MURRAY BRIDGE TRAINER, Shaun Matcott is well and truly lapping the field in the Leading SA TAB Trainer with 295 win-ners up to November 30. Troy Murray has a strong grip on second place with 111, while Kim Johnstone and Petar Jovano-vic share third place on 86. Don Turner has pole position in the Leading SA Non TAB Trainer with 10 winners, three clear of Gary Pidgeon (7), and Marion Lanyon (6). Scull Murphy is well clear in the Leading SA Stud Dog with 37 winners, Emerley Carlos holds send place on 17 with Dr. Van Loon and Rivergum Slayer shar-ing third place on 15 apiece. The Leading SA Brood Bitch is a closely fought battle, with Blue Palace showing the way on 41, narrowly ahead of Bar Crusher (39) and Tilka Lee is third on 34.

Judy Hurley looks to have the SA Breeder all but sewn up with 125 points, well clear of Karen Bearpark (80) and Darrell Hearnden (71) is third.

Age no reason to stop TWO HEATS of the Veterans Mixed 4th/5th Grade feature were run at Angle Park last Thursday night, with the first four runners past the post making their way through to the final. Rawson Reason showed that age has not slowed him down at all when he ran Best Of Night 29.97 in heat two for trainer, Tania Foster. Drawn poorly in the six yet starting the $2.60 popular elect, Rawson Reason jumped fairly then showed superior speed to cross the field and hold the early lead over Long Gully Jacob through the first turn. Clearing out to lead by five lengths over Long Gully Jacob in the back straight, Rawson Reason was showed no mercy and ex-tended his advantage to seven lengths at the top turn. Rounding the final bend with a big lead over Uno Blackjack getting through to second, Raw-son Reason went on and recorded a strong victory. The son of Kiowa Sweet Trey and Ravada Reason cruised past the post five and a half lengths clear of Uno Blackjack, while Long Gully Jacob claimed the skinny end of the prize. Burning Daylight won the first heat of the feature for trainer, Bosco Stamenkovic, defeating Airbag and Emerley Charmer in 30.20.

Another Mayhem month KALDEN MAYHEM took his third SA Greyhound of the Month award for the year when the Troy

Murray trained chaser was named as the recipient for November. Kalden Mayhem had four starts for two wins during No-vember, with his major achieve-ment being a brilliant victory in the Group 3 Gawler Gold Cup final. At the end of November, Kal-den Mayhem’s record stood at 28 wins and 16 placings from 61 career starts. Other chasers to take out at least one SA Greyhound of the Month award so far this year in-clude Satanic Cash, Goosebumps, Brahma Boy, Dark Duo, Led Zep-pelin, Hannah McLaren, and Kal-den Aurora. It was also the fourth succes-sive month that Troy Murray has been the trainer of the Greyhound of the Month.

It was the fifth time this year that the son of Big Daddy Cool and Abbadale Gold has taken out the Run of the Month Award.

Dyna does it again DYNA CHAYNE maintained his good strike rate at Angle Park last Monday when he put up a Best Of Night performance for trainer, Shaun Matcott. Poorly drawn in box seven but starting a $3.40 chance, Dyna Chayne jumped slowly and showed good field sense and im-proved through to second behind race favourite, King Ashy through the first turn. Camped on the leader’s heels entering the back straight, Dyna Chayne slipped past on the rail to reach the top turn with a clear lead over King Ashy. Extending his break to a cou-ple of lengths through the final bend, as King Ashy tried desper-ately to raise another effort, Dyna Chayne proved too strong on the night.

The son of Droopy’s Maldini and Talina Bale won by just over two lengths to King Ashy in a new personal best 29.86, with On This Day third. Unplaced only three times in his career so far, Dyna Chayne took his record to seven wins and 10 placings from just 20 starts.

THE WOW FACTOR returned to Cannington on Saturday night when rising superstar, Miata smashed the 642 metres track record at her middle distance debut.

The brilliant daughter of Bombas-tic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird was returning to racing after a month off due to injury, and resumed like she had never been away. “She has been trialling well and clocked 30.18 on a slowish track on Monday night,” trainer, Paul Stuart advised.

With a record of 10 wins from 13 starts, Miata was installed the $1.10 favourite in the Free to All, with a field of six heading to the boxes. Miata began only fairly from the tricky seven alley but got plenty of room, following Short Haul over and then heading him after just a few me-tres.

With a lap to travel the brilliant chaser was highballing by three lengths over Rousay, running within a length of the sectional record. Through the pen in 19.39 the mighty Miata putting four lengths on Rousay, with Short Haul a further eight lengths adrift.

Passing the release point in a new split record of 24.92, the only ques-tion was as to whether Stuart’s charge could better Octanol’s 36.76 track record, set in February 2009. She not only beat the record, but smashed it, setting a new time stan-

dard of an amazing 36.55. Rousay, who is no slouch by any

means, finished a distant 12 lengths second, with a further eight lengths to Short Haul collecting the minor money.

When I spoke with him on Sun-day morning, Paul S tuar t was thrilled with the performance of Miata.

“She got out well, found some room and got to use her good speed.”

I am happily surprised that she ran a track record first-up, and she has pulled up very well.” Stuart ruled out a tilt at the Sale Cup, preferring to focus Miata’s at-tention on Cannington.

“I hope to give her a couple more 642’s then step up to the staying jour-ney, aiming towards the Galaxy.”

Hopefully for Stuart’s sake Miata does not scare away the opposition over the middle distance, and that she can have a perfect lead up campaign to what could be a stellar 2012. Miata’s record to date is 11 wins and two placings from 14 starts, earn-ing a tick under $40,000.

She holds the three fastest times around Cannington’s 530 metres jour-ney and the fastest over the middle distance.

Will she add the staying journey record to her achievements?

I would not be betting against it.

Vocal’s rugged cup EFFICIENT, strong and tough are not the glamour words of greyhound rac-ing, but they aptly describe the most consistent greyhound of 2011, Vocal Enforcer.

Bred in WA by Peta and Rod Noden, with the polish applied by Andrew McLaren, he recorded his 18th win for the year at headquarters with a typically rugged display. Sent out $2.70 favourite for the 37th running of the Anniversary Cup, the son of Black Enforcer and She’s Vocal was away cleanly from the boxes, edging to an early lead.

Passing the post the first time the favourite looked to be in bother, with speedsters Ocean Deep levelling-up on his outside and Star Keeping along the rail in a packing field. Vocal Enforcer continued to match strides with the pacy Star Keeping through the bend, with the leading duo colliding before the fa-vourite crossed to the front.

Onto the back straight the favour-ite was under immediate pressure from Kid Cudi, who took the first bend via the cape, adding lengths but avoiding the interference. Leaving the back in 19.27, Kid Cudi had got to within a head of Vo-cal Enforcer, and the track star looked in danger of being rolled.

McLaren’s kennel star ran a per-fect bend and emerged into the home straight with a length lead before run-ning home a two lengths victor in 30.71 to pick up the $12,000 prize.

Kid Cudi worked hard to run sec-ond, with How Goods That third. A very happy Andrew McLaren said, “Vocal Enforcer jumped well, though I was a bit concerned entering the first bend as they bunched around him.”

“He did a good job to hold his spot and toughed it out after being challenged by Kid Cudi.”

McLaren advised that Vocal En-forcer will probably have one more

run before a short let-up, returning for a tilt at the Perth Cup. Vocal Enforcer has amassed $148,000 plus WA bred bonuses, winning 21 of his 41 outings.

All of those wins, bar four, have been at Cannington.

He holds an unassailable two and half win lead over Oliver Allen in the Cannington Track Star of the Year award.

His feature wins for the year have been the Group 2 All Stars, the Puppy Classic and the Anniversary Cup

In addition he has run a close sec-ond in the WA Derby to Allen Elroy and in the WA Sprint Championship. IT WAS a good night for Andrew McLaren, with the trainer bringing up a treble.

Hayley Me Mum, described by his trainer as a good front runner, did just that when blitzing them early to win by five lengths over a newcomer, Pudzianoski, who from a punting point of view, is worth following.

Marceri brought up the treble for McLaren, making it back to back wins in provincial sprint grade.

The former Victorian ran effec-tively a mirror of the previous Satur-day’s race, chasing out Vocal Su-preme before finishing too powerfully for a four lengths win.

McLaren stated, “He stands up a bit in boxes and will only be moder-ately away, but he shows good track sense.”

Expect to see Marceri over the middle distance before too long.

THE RECENT Brisbane Cup at Albion Park was the final Group race for this year in Queensland. The judging panel for the 2011 Queensland Greyhound Of The Year meets early next month and is currently compiling a list of candidates.

And it’s quite a lengthy list too. Glen Gallon won the Brisbane Cup final.

Tony Brett has the dog engaged in the about to commence Silver Chief se-ries at The Meadows.

As things stand, Glen Gallon’s record makes him a GOTY contender, and suc-cess in the Silver Chief would obviously be a major boost to his chances. Dwyer Lennon’s Dashing Corsair is an obvious GOTY prime candidate follow-ing his great form leading up to victory in the National Distance Championship in August. City of Ipswich Gold Cup winner, Cold Fusion comes under notice, not only because of that success, but his eight wins at Albion Park.

The dog is trained near Casino by Neil Falls, but well and truly fits the criteria of minimum number of starts required in Queensland. Imposing Jett for Dave Irwin won the Group 2 Queensland Futurity back in March.

She has won another eight races in Queensland and New South Wales. Bogie King for Ryan Ayre won the Group 2 Queensland Derby, which fol-lowed victory in the Group 1 National Derby at The Gardens.

The dog has 14 wins for the year. He Knows Uno for Mick Patterson

won the Flying Amy Classic back in May. That’s a restricted age race, but He Knows Uno has made it to feature Group finals as well.

Iso Octane won the Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup for Tony Brett, part of an 11 race haul for the dog during the year. Ron Ball’s Metz Magic won the Group 1 National Sprint Championship final.

The dog is engaged in this Thurs-day’s Big Dog Challenge final at Albion Park. Whilst that’s not a Group event, victory over 600 metres would look good in addition to what the dog has achieved over 520 metres. Tony Brett’s Velocity Regina won the

Group 3 Townsville Cup amongst 10 wins for the year. Barry Dull’s Befitting doesn’t have a Group win but has been running slick times over 600 metres.

Should Befitting win the Group 1 Sale Cup over 650 metres on December 26, she becomes a very real contender. These names are most of the main contenders, but not all.

One gets the feeling that the GOTY judging and voting is going to be quite a tough task. Well schooled PEOPLE OPPOSED to greyhound racing nowadays would have had nervous breakdowns had they been around in the year 1929.

I discovered a website with newspa-per articles from that year and there was quite a mention of greyhound racing in south-east Queensland.

How about this concerning a meeting at Coorparoo, an inner Brisbane suburb.

“At the last meeting the hares ran well and were much better schooled.”

Or this reference to the first coursing meeting at the Gabba.

“Trials can be arranged with the groundsman at the Gabba. The club re-ports a plentiful supply of well schooled hares.”

And this concerning the opening meeting at Toowoomba in 1929.

“A well laid out track has been laid at the Werrington Park Racecourse and the distance will be 365 yards.”

“The hares have been given a special preparation.”

Strewth! Gambling and people urinating in the

streets is nothing compared to grey-hounds chasing live hares!

Car park full? AS FAR AS control body, Racing Queen-sland is concerned, the greyhound and harness complex at Deagon on Bris-bane’s northside is still a definite mission. There have been plenty of hurdles, including the Brisbane City Council not embracing the concept.

They have to approve it so winning the Council decision makers over is a must. RQ has conducted information ses-sions concerning the project, pointing out the positives such as creating employ-ment in the Deagon area and bringing money into the suburb and surrounds by people racing their greyhounds and pac-ers. Some locals have counter-acted by claiming that people will just turn up, race

and go home without spending anything that will benefit the locals.

That’s pretty true, actually. There’s been mention of the gam-bling side of things, as in, some people reckon there’s enough opportunities to gamble in their area without building a new racing complex.

That argument is put forward con-cerning any proposed new racing centre, of course. I had to chuckle at one Deagon resi-dent’s cause for concern.

He claims “there will be thousands coming into our suburb at night time, cre-ating chaos, including people urinating in the streets.” Thousands of people going to the greyhound and harness meetings?

I’d like to see that! People urinating in the streets? There won’t be any cars parked in the

streets. There’s parking for 400 vehicles in-

side the complex, and that will rarely be filled, if at all.

Meanwhile, it’s business as normal at Albion Park until Deagon gets over the line. Consider this The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.

LEKTRA JAY brought up the hat-trick of wins by taking out the Rapid-vite AKM Special Event over 595 metres in Best Of Night 34.30 at San-down Park last Thursday night.

Sent to box two at $3.60, the An-drea Dailly trained chaser was a bit tardy at boxrise and tried to drive between Daintree Palace and Bling It On at the first corner, where he was third.

Daintree Palace led them to the Judge with a lap to travel in 9.25 and had Lektra Jay a length and a half back second, with a similar margin to Bling It On third.

Lektra Jay made his move and claimed the lead just before reaching the far corner, where he paused the timer at 23.45, with Daintree Palace second and Bling It On third.

They never looked like catching Lektra Jay once he was in front and he made his way to the line to score by three and a quarter lengths over Bling It On ($4.10), with Daintree Palace ($2.10 fav) five and a quarter lengths further astern.

Lektra Jay has now won two of seven at the trip, as part of his 19 wins in 58 starts overall.

The white and black chaser, a son of Where’s Pedro and Elektra, is owned by Philip Lenehan.

Come on bonus COME ON RODGE collected the GOBIS Bonus by taking out the Tooradin Trial Track Grade 4 over 515 metres.

Coming from box five at $3.80, the son of Our Barney and Cork In Ocean was away reasonably and was placed third at the first mark, where Black Saharrah led in 5.03, with Dyna Gala second.

Black Saharrah still held sway at the far turn, passing through in 18.90 but Come On Rodge had closed fast and was on her hammer, and they’d put over two lengths on Dyna Gala and Explosive Drop.

Come On Rodge took over com-ing to the home turn then came away over the concluding stages and scored by four and a quarter lengths to Dyna Gala ($7.70), with a neck to third placed Black Saharrah ($5.10).

In clocking Best Of Night 29.47, Come On Rodge made it two wins in eight goes at the trip.

The Jeannine Giles owned and trained chaser has now been around 26 times in total for eight wins.

Star’s bonus ZIPPSTAR picked up the GOBIS Bonus when an all the way winner of the Bloss’s Benson Sandown Start 64 Free For All over 515 metres. Rated at $6.30 from box four, the Neville King trained chaser exploded from the traps and was off and gone, leading by three lengths to the first mark in a flying 5.01. Second was Where’s Demonica narrowly in front of Spring Special on the fence and Dyna Morris was between runners.

Zippstar sped around to the back in 18.80 and led Spring Special by five lengths, with Crossfarnogue a further three lengths back and the rest out of it.

Zippstar did it comfortably to the Judge, saluting by three and three quarter lengths over Spring Special ($1.90 fav), with Crossfarnogue ($29.70) two and a half lengths fur-ther afield.

Zippstar, a son of Return The King and Sanzzero, is owned by the Pizazz Park Syndicate.

The red fawn chaser posted 29.54 to make it seven wins in 14 goes at the trip, promoting his career tally to 20 wins in 42 outings.

Bate’s quartet GRAEME BATE took training hon-ours for the night with four winners, and Aleta Allen was his first leg when she posted 29.78 to score an all the way win in the 515 metres face-book.com/sandowndogs Grade 5.

Sent to box three at $15.40, the daughter of Where’s Pedro and Tally Bale scored by three and a half lengths over Select Nan ($2.60 fav), with She’s Bossy ($4.10) a length back third.

Aleta Allen, owned by Jan Wheeler, got a double when Carol Allen gave Graeme his third winner by scoring in the Macro Meats Grade 5 over 515 metres.

Rated on top at $4.10 out of box five, the daughter of Where’s Pedro and Daphne Bale recorded 29.89 when beating Autoamerican ($5.20) by three lengths, with Where’s Turner ($8.80) coming in third, a neck away.

Leg two for Graeme was Dyna Kate, who led all the way to score in the Rapidvite Accelerator Oil Grade 5 over 595 metres.

Drawn box one at $2.70, the

daughter of Collision and Gold Rush Bale registered the new PB of 34.69 to salute by two lengths over Coolan Miss ($2.60 fav), with Iceman Raikkonen ($12.70) a half length further adrift.

Dyna Kate is owned by Brendan Wheeler, who combined with Graeme again to score with Dyna Beat in the Macro Meats Grade 5 over 515 metres in 29.87.

The son of Droopys Maldini and Talina Bale wore the red vest at $4.10 to a two and a quarter lengths win over Malvado ($11.60) and Lek-tra Johnson ($4.10), with a neck be-ing the margin there.

Sisco Turbo, trained by one of Lara’s top fishermen, Johnny Galea, proved too strong for his rivals with a gutsy performance to notch his second win over the 515 metres trip in 30.03.

Long-time between drinks, but Ron Stevens, Sue Eustace and Gayle Saunders were over the moon after Suron Undercover surprised punters with his 30.05 win. A son of Cover Up and Hotline Style, it gave Ron and his team their first city winner since Torbek Flyer saluted back in 2004.

In-form city sprinter, Come On Rodge, handled by Michael Giles, showed good track sense to overcome the five alley and score his eighth career win in 29.47.

“Nifty” Nev and Kay King with the very competitive Zippstar, who came out running and was never challenged, posting his 20th career victory when successful in the Free For All in 29.55.

Melbourne bound SPRING BLUEBOY will tackle Gosford’s Group 2 Woy Woy Poul-try Gold Cup heats on December 27 following his outstanding win in Monday’s Bathurst RSL Soldier’s Saddle final.

Trained at Appin by Christine Oldfield for Orange owner and breeder, Greg Board, Spring Blueboy led throughout in 30.01.

“The water truck went around just before the race and soaked the track,” Board said this week.

“`Spring Blueboy’s time was equivalent to 29.70 on a quick sur-face.”

The Oldfield/Board combination has had a big year, winning last month’s Group 1 Vic Peters Classic at Wentworth Park with Spring Gun.

Saturday’s Silver Chief Classic at Melbourne’s The Meadows is Spring Gun’s goal.

********** PUNTERS awaiting Pegeon Ap-peal’s staying debut will have to be patient as trainer, Barry Wilson wants to “win a few more sprints” before testing the dog’s stamina.

Pegeon Appeal gave the flying El Conquistador a big start and a beating over 520 metres at Wen-tworth Park last weekend, making racegoers salivate over the dog’s 720 metres debut.

“It certainly seems Pegeon Ap-peal will stay,” Wilson said this week.

“His dam, Twinkle Appeal was produced by a sister to Slick Appeal, who ran a Wenty Park 720 metres record of 42.32 for me.”

“Slick Appeal was a similar type of dog to Pegeon Appeal.”

Lake Munmorah based Wilson knows what it takes to train a stayer, as he also prepared 1960’s champ, tiny Sarra Princess.

********** NEWCASTLE plumber, Russell Mansley played 450 top grade local soccer games before switching to greyhounds 22 years ago.

And a chance observation led to him training last weekend’s Wen-tworth Park 720 metres winner, Thrilling Frank for Lorraine Atchi-son, who’s amongst NSW’s most successful breeders.

“A few years ago I bought a dog from Lorraine called Mishka’s Puz-zle and she won 12 sprints at Mait-land, The Gardens and Gosford,” Mansley said. “Recently Lorraine’s daughter, Natalie was at The Gar-dens whilst I was trialling, and re-

ported to her mum how good my greyhounds appeared.”

“Lorraine then called asking me to train for her.”

“Thrilling Frank’s run-home times are fantastic, but his problem is his lack of early speed.”

Mansley employs three people in his plumbing business but still finds time to train 10 racers and raise 10 puppies on his 2½ hectare property at Black Hill.

He rates Rare Air, his first city winner 14 years ago, as his best, along with Manizzy Hypo, who con-tested a dozen Group staying races and twice chased home Melbourne star, Flashing Floods.

********** TRIXIE LIDCOMBE, who won 11 races over distances ranging from 400 to 600 metres, is to become a mother.

She is in pup to Dashing Corsair, with the pups to have a double cross of great sire, Token Prince.

In other breeding news, Special Kid, whose career was peppered with serious injuries but who won in 29.82 at Wenty Park when that track was far slower than it is these days, is a father.

Gift Of Shiraz, a sister to the brilliant but ill-fated Humdrum, has whelped 11 puppies to Young breeder, Vicki Prest’s Special Kid.

A GREAT EXAMPLE of how suc-cessful the Dapto Puppy Auction has been over the years was seen last Thursday night when this year’s run-ning of the Country Winnebago Clas-sic took place. Victory by No Rules League in the 520 metres event confirmed the belief that bargains can be purchased at the Auction that go on to win the prestigious feature final, which car-ries $75,000 to the winner.

That prizemoney level finishes a staggering story for the owners, who purchased the daughter of Bit Chili and Carlz for just $800 on Auction Day in 2010. To cap-off a great night, the punt-ers also jumped aboard and sent the 28kg chaser to the start a pronounced favourite. When the green light switched on, all eyes were on box two, as Un-finished was expected to begin well and veer right, presenting a nice run for No Rules League in the red vest.

However, when the lids rose, No Rules League was actually best to begin, while Unfinished blew the start, so the favourite charged into the first turn with only the green vested Frisky Melody matching his early pace. Leaving the straight No Rules League bounced into Frisky Melody but both greyhounds remained bal-anced, and it was No Rules League that broke away and led them to the back straight. Punters and connections started to cheer with still half the race to go, as the strong front running No Rules League had the big prize safely in her keeping. Turning for home No Rules League was full of running and pow-ered to the line a three and three quarter lengths winner over Frisky Melody in 30.10, with Go Jessie’s Girl occupying third spot, a half length away. Prepared by George Micallef, No Rules League is raced by father and

son combo, Joe and Craig Bertinato, and to date from just 13 starts the red brindle chaser has won eight times with four placings, with this being her sixth victory at the Dogdome.

Frisky Melody (Big Daddy Cool x Token Melody), trained by Vince Bennett, has produced seven wins and 14 placings from 28 career starts, whilst the Norm Becroft trained Go Jessie’s Girl (Collision x Go Mighty Mouse) from 29 career starts has notched 12 wins and 13 placings.

Corby appeals WINNEBAGO CLASSIC Consola-tion winner, Corby was another bar-gain purchase at the same Auction, with a littermate also qualifying for the final after both pups were bred by Geoff Cook. From box eight Corby began speedily and sat alongside rails run-ner, Mukinbudin approaching the first corner.

Corby maintained his momentum and took up the front running role heading to the back straight and then opened right up coming down the side.

Having been luckless in his semi-final, he looked set to compensate trainer, Robyn Goodwin with an easy win.

Turning for home Corby was still well clear then from the pack emerged Cousin Zara, who made up many lengths on the winner but failed by a half length to catch up, whilst next past the post was Big Wave, a further six and a quarter lengths astern. The 520 metres journey was clocked in 30.30, heralding Corby’s third victory at the track.

Corby, by Surf Lorian out of Trendy Habit, has now had 17 starts for nine wins and three placings.

Cousin Zara (Collision x Angel Doll), trained by Ray Webster, has had 10 starts for a win and three plac-ings, whilst Colin Walker’s Big Wave, a littermate of the winner, has raced four times for one win and two placings.

THE WIN by Jaynie Allen in the Freewind Motor Home Stake sug-gests that a longer distance gallop could occur in the future, as the Simon Rhodes trained chaser scored a narrow but strong win over the 520 metres. Boxrise saw Jaynie Allen, from box two begin well, with pace also shown by the two extreme drawn runners, Big Spirit and Lyndor Lee.

Big Spirit crossed the inside run-ners leaving the straight, with Lyndor Lee next and Jaynie Allen sitting in behind.

Big Spirit was travelling well throughout the race, but off the top corner Jaynie Allen moved into sec-ond spot and started to close on the leader.

Swinging for home Big Spirit led with Jaynie Allen knuckling down determinedly. In the shadows of the post Jaynie Allen dived at Big Spirit and gained a narrow verdict, scoring by a head over Big Spirit in a smart 30.17, with Lyndor Lee a further three quarters of a length away third. By Collision from Olivia Allen, to date Jaynie Allen has had 30 career starts for six wins and 12 placings.

Big Spirit (General Magoo x Ecka’s Angel), trained by John Tate, after 35 career starts has acquired five wins and 13 placings, whilst Lyndor Lee (Primo Uno x Micro Lee) has collected nine wins and 13 placings from 56 outings for trainer, Mark Arncliffe.

WITH the summer season yet to get moving across New South Wales, so far our protracted spring weather has produced some very cold tempera-tures for this time of the year.

Topically for trainer, Christine Oldfield and owner, Greg Board, it looks like being a very long spring after Spring Blueboy took home first prize in last week’s Bathurst Soldiers Saddle that followed-on from the re-cent outstanding efforts of kennel-mate, Spring Gun. Spring Blueboy was the popular pick to collect the $10,000 winner’s cheque, and after a good beginning from box six he never left the result in doubt. When the lids lifted rails runner, Go Mighty Shiraz was well served, however, Spring Blueboy was able to make a clean getaway and had crossed his inside rival by the first corner. The majority of runners tightened up behind the two front runners, so interest was only in the leading pair.

Spring Blueboy knows the west-ern districts track well and handled the home turn nicely to keep a deter-mined Go Mighty Shiraz at bay. When the judge called a halt in the 520 metres feature, Spring Blue-boy had a two lengths buffer over Go

Mighty Shiraz in 30.01, with Bomb Disposal running on well to take third prize, a length away. Spring Blueboy, whelped in Octo-ber 2009 is by Collision out of Spring Belle and after just eight starts has produced six wins and one placing. Capers on-course DAVID PRINGLE would have rued one feature that got away after Mid-night Capers annihilated his rivals in the Soldiers Saddle Consolation, hav-ing clocked a much quicker time than the final, running 29.87. Midnight Capers sported the pink vest and got off to a great start, sitting alongside Warrior Legend in the run to the first turn.

Leaving the straight Midnight Capers stepped on the throttle and dashed away from his rivals, and the further they went the further this son of Collision continued to space his opponents. Turning for home Midnight Ca-pers was well clear and raced to the judge 11¼ lengths ahead of Candyli-cious, with Direct Bullet a nose away third.

At just two years of age, Midnight Capers has a big future on the track, with so far his nine career starts pro-ducing five wins and three placings.

JASON MACKAY would have been very content after Zipping Lad’s Newcastle Cup win at Betchoice Gardens last Saturday night, as his star boarder finally put back to back feature wins together and established the be-lief that he will be the top half-miler in the nation for the start of 2012. The $10,000 to winner feature had only five starters, but all the Sydney topliners were there, and with no interference during the run, the best dog won. When the lids opened it was rails runner Key To Eden that began well and settled down ahead of Zipping Lad, who exited box eight.

In the straight the first time Key To Eden started to roll off the fence, which allowed Zipping Lad to push through.

Leaving the straight Zipping Lad powered to the front and put Key To Eden under pressure a long way from home. Continuing to rock n roll in front, Zipping Lad scooted right away down the back, with only the veteran, Slick Lee running on.

Turning for home Zipping Lad was still well clear of Slick Lee, working home stylishly.

But Zipping Lad was able to hold out Slick Lee and score by one and a half lengths, competing the 715 metres journey in 41.82, with Key To Eden a further four lengths away third. Zipping Lad has now won the Newcastle Cup, the previous week’s Summer Cup and was runner-up in the Sydney Cup, so a strong campaign interstate is all that is needed to slot straight into that number one seating.

Congratulations I THINK I will honour Hobart Greyhounds with some sort of award at the end of the year, and it’ll be a big one at that.

Last Thursday night they had eight heats of the Group 1 Hobart Thousand.

There were two heats of eight and six heats of seven scheduled.

So, as you mathematicians have already gathered, there must have been 58 entries for the $75,000 to the winner event sponsored by Aceland Stud.

With only 58 when they had called for 64, did they do what Geelong did when they came up short for the Group 2 Gee-long Gold Cup?

Or did they do like Sandown when they had the same problem with the Group 1 Bold Trease Carnival Cup?

I can’t ask did they do like Brisbane, who actually reserved runners and only staged five heats because Brisbane never specified how many they wanted; they only called for the best greyhounds.

But instead of putting a thousand bogus excuses forward and running seven heats and reserving six other dogs, obviously Hobart gave EVERY eligible dog that was entered a start.

They actually put owners, trainers and the greyhounds first!

Can you believe that? Now for those of you who have rated

Tasmania as the minnow of Australian racing, I’m going to say something here.

In my humble opinion, by one simple action from the Hobart Club, Tasmania just jumped above Victoria.

If Victoria doesn’t like that sentiment, then try getting your priorities right, be-cause two Clubs, who slap their own backs as being amongst Australia’s best, let the side down miserably and have been shown up by Hobart! Ham sandwiches WE REFER to dogs that are drawn in middle boxes as being the ham in the sandwich.

However, we now have another lot of ham sandwiches.

Let me tell you how this works. In our normal races, we pick the best

dogs first and give them a run, with the worst dogs only gaining a start if the lack of numbers warrant.

Now we have low-end races, whereby we seemingly pick the worst dogs entered first and give them a run (and by golly, isn’t there plenty of them) and the best dogs, well, sorry, tough luck.

I will stipulate that some of the best dogs could probably be running at normal meetings.

But there are times when there are plenty of entries at both ends and that leaves all those dogs in between.

Yes, “ham sandwiches”, dogs that are either destined to get thrashed by better dogs or sit at home in their kennels whilst dogs that they could carry around get starts.

And everyone is fine with this, right? Look, low-end races are fine, but I

think you still have to pick dogs on form; best form in and placegetters and re-serves from the previous meeting too.

If we get 300 entries for these meet-ings perhaps we need to lower the bar, in other words, reduce the amount of dogs that are eligible. Spot-on WHEN some trainers express opinions on how races will go or how their charge will go in that race, you should always pay attention. Whether you use the information provided or not will depend on your own thoughts and how much faith you put in the trainer making the comment.

I rate Tony Brett as one of the five best dog trainers in Australia, and he has a dog in his kennel that I also have a lot of time for, Glen Gallon.

I thought that Glen Gallon’s chances of winning the Group 1 Brisbane Cup final were slim at best until I heard Tony inter-viewed pre-race.

What he said made perfect sense, and after re-analysing the race, I changed my mind on Glen Gallon’s chances from “it’s going to be tough and he’s going to need a lot of luck” to “by golly, what Tony says is correct and this dog can definitely win this race”.

And win it he did. Even though it’s his home patch, you

can’t help but be impressed, as when you look at that field, it was almost as good as it gets.

The other interesting thing that Tony mentioned in another interview was that he felt going that into the series that Iso Octane was his best hope.

That chaser was beaten into second place in his heat by Radley Bale, who ended up running third in the final, and as such was only the first reserve.

But you would probably agree with Tony before the series that Iso Octane gave him his best hope.

Glen Gallon rolled He Knows Uno in a heat, and on that formline was to be given plenty of respect, even though this race was a cracker.

The old saying that ‘box draws can

win you big races’ held true, as Tony believed that with Dyna Tron and Spring Gun in one and two, both who were ex-pected to have a cut-throat battle for the lead, that Glen Gallon was perfectly boxed in the three to get the sit on them then pounce.

Spot-on, Tony! You always remember your first ARCHIE THOMPSON, who is an ambas-sador for greyhound racing, received a bit back when his first greyhound, Thomo’s Pizazz scored her first race win at Shepparton on November 30. After finally drawing an inside box, the mad railing daughter of Collision and Okay Supreme wore the red vest as fa-vourite at $1.40 to lead throughout and romp home an 11¼ lengths winner. That race was a heat of the GRV VBIS Maiden over 450 metres and from the unfavourable draw of eight, the Graeme Bate trained chaser qualified for the rich final with a second in her semi. This bitch has plenty of ability and will give Archie plenty of joy in the months ahead, as I can see her winning her share of races, especially if she draws inside boxes. Owned WE ALL marvelled at the Wheeler fam-ily’s great feat of getting the first seven home in the Melbourne Cup.

We all can’t achieve results like that at that level, but for some, having multiple runners in a race does yield some great results. Also at Shepparton on November 30, Peter Bartlett achieved one of those mile-stones that I bet he’ll never forget. In the third race, a 390 metres Grade 5, Peter had four runners that just hap-pened to be littermates. The quartet, from a litter by Mandagery Man and Kimba’s Hope, were Dot Man, Kimba Rose, Spotted Patch and Charlie Charlie, and they’d drawn boxes two, three, four and five. Anyhow, 22.55 seconds after the boxes flew open, Peter had provided the trifecta on the event, with Spotted Patch ($41.60) scoring by a half head over Kimba Rose ($7.20) and Dot Man ($1.80 fav), who was three lengths further back. Unfortunately, Charlie Charlie could-n’t make it a first-four-finish, winding up sixth. The divvies on the race were: Quinella $38.00; Exacta $113.10; Trifecta $326.80.

Even though Peter owned all four, he only trained three of them, with the winner being trained by Daren Bartlett.

Quirky doubles HOW many times do we see two races over the same distance on a race card where both winners run the same time?

It actually happens a fair bit, and at Healesville on December 4 there were only two 350 metres races programmed and both winners stopped the clock at 19.53.

In the sixth event, Balotelli wore the pink vest to victory at $17.60, whilst in the eighth race, it was number eight again that scored, the $12.60 elect, Major Fire.

When you look at the SP’s of the winners, the Daily Double was very poor at $54.40.

On the other hand, the Quaddie yielded $5797.60 with these two runners, along with Sicem Erin ($6.40) and Uno Daisy ($8.20). Follow-up IT’S BEEN almost a year since the Group 1 Laurels of 2010 was run, and I said not long after that we’d come back in a year and see how the finalists have fared.

The winner was Up And Away, and of course she proved my argument in the affirmative about why puppy races shouldn’t be Group 1’s by not being able to win a race for more than six months afterwards, due to being graded out of everything she raced in.

Anyhow, she’s contested 29 races since her Laurels win, and it took her until September 3 to get back in the winner’s circle, with her record now showing five more wins.

However, one was the Group 2 Bal-larat Cup final.

Kalden Athena was the runner-up, and since the Laurels she’s had 33 starts for 11 wins and made three Group Finals, finishing seventh in the Group 2 Ladies Bracelet, sixth in the Group 3 Big Dog Cup and sixth in the Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation.

The third dog was Tonneli Bale, who’s raced 36 times since the Laurels and won 12 of those.

She won the Darwin Cup but was disqualified, and before that she ran fourth to El Grand Senor in the Group 2 Traralgon Cup.

Prior to that she ran second in the Group 1 Sapphire Crown and scored in the Group 2 Ladies Bracelet and Group 2 WA Oaks, as well as running third in the Group 1 |National Futurity and finishing fifth in the Group 2 Queensland Futurity.

Black Saharrah was fourth, who has raced 22 times for eight wins, and she ran last in the Group 2 Sandown Cup and fifth in the Group 1 Maturity.

Isadoll came in fifth and went around just once after the Laurels, finishing out of the money at The Gardens.

Sixth home in the Laurels was New Year’s Punch, and since then she’s started 39 times for eight wins.

Seventh place in the Laurels went to Coolan Miss, who’s had 18 goes since then, picking up five wins.

Last in was Budgie Lass, and she’s scored in four of her 38 tries.

So, 53 wins from the finalists of last year, approximately a victory a week.

I will point out that a few of those bitches did win races in fast times and beat some pretty good gallopers along the way.

Omen bet THOSE of you who love omen bets should have had a nice collect at Shepparton on December 7.

In the opening race, a Tier 3 Maiden over 390 metres, in the yellow vest as a $6.80 chance was Foo Fighter.

Music lovers would appreciate the fact that the Foo Fighters are currently touring Australia.

Anyhow, Foo Fighter (the greyhound) got the cash with a comfortable three and a half lengths win in a reasonable 22.76.

Trained by Arron Rocke for Robert Maher, the red brindle galloper is a son of Big Daddy Cool and Hot Zepha.

Over the odds SOMETHING many of us know is that Peter Giles is one of the best trainers of stayers that we have.

There’s definitely some déjà vu to this story, as I’m almost certain that I commented on this same dog, Kinga Will, before, and on the same subject. Anyway, Kinga Will was in at San-down on December 1 and was drawn in box seven in the 715 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

I thought he looked a real good chance, but $5.50 seemed a very gener-ous quote to my way of thinking.

And with Adelle Bale setting a really fast pace up front, that suited a dog that’s a genuine stayer, as he got a lovely run in transit and proved too strong at the end, scoring in a very smart 41.98.

Superbly bred by Bit Chili and Or Catra, the Noel Talia owned chaser’s success is part of a great run his dam is currently having, as she’s the mother of Zipping Malfoy, who landed the Group 1 Bold Trease Carnival Cup, and Zipping Lad, who scored in the Group 3 Summer Cup in recent weeks. That leads me to… OKAY, do you recall me having a crack at Sandown over the Group 1 Bold Trease Carnival Cup, and how I suggested they should have given every dog that was entered a run?

My call was they could have given all the nominated chasers a start, even though it meant running heats without full fields. Well, the Club defended itself by saying (in part) and I quote: “Furthermore, for a club to run two x 7 and a six dog field is not good for the on and off-course punters, and reflects badly on the indus-try.”

Then tell me this Sandown, on Thurs-day December 1 you had on the program a 715 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

Seemingly, you only got seven nomi-nations.

You made it Race 7, the third leg of the TAB Quaddie!

I mean, you could have just scrapped it or made it Race 11, couldn’t you? Your Say “Happy Punter” stated, “Up And Away is one of my favourite greyhounds and I was rapt to see her win the Ballarat Cup!” Yes, I was very pleased to see her do well too. “Ima Groupie” asked, “Did you notice that Hobart gave all dogs a start in the Hobart Thousand?” I certainly did (see lead story). “Gipps Lander” stated, “Thank you Tree-man for writing a story on the Giles fam-ily. I always have something on their dogs when they race.” Well, guess you’d be all cashed up at the moment; hope you had a little bit on Kinga Will at Sandown last week. “Hard Nose” remarked, “Comparing Velo-cette and El Galo is like comparing ap-ples and oranges, maybe they should compare them with sons of similar sires.” Yes, compare Velocette with say Bit Chili and El Galo with say El Grand Senor when his pups race, something like that, eh? KNOW WHAT IS NORMAL IF YOU hear hooves approaching, no one expects a zebra to pass by.

In the same way, if your dog is diagnosed with a condition or disease that would appear to be plucked from beyond left field then it is wise to be sceptical.

The unbelievable and fantastic are generally just that, unbelievable and fantastic!

Nevertheless, there is always that tiny part of us that wants to believe in a magical solution to problems.

I spent five years at university learning firstly the normality of the insides of animals for three years, and then the abnormalities and treatments in my last two years.

Treating greyhounds is impossible if the therapist has little idea about what is actually normal.

When I first began in greyhound practice I came across conditions and injuries alien to any university course.

Over the years the absurd and incredible slipped muscles, bones and joints have gradually slipped into the

oblivion they deserve, but there is still a strong undercurrent of misinformation driven by a culture of ignorance, which is costing the industry dearly.

The issue is not totally generated by the amateur therapists amongst us, but also by a lot of veterinarians, who have little hands-on experience in treating racing dogs, and an ego too large to let them admit it.

The greyhound client is one not to be engaged, and the patient is often treated in an atmosphere of mutual distrust between doctor and trainer.

The lack of informed scientific information, as the foundation for the treatment of greyhound conditions, is the primary cause of the propagation of the conditions and cures that drive many of the alternative therapies.

Often the dogs “suffering” from these supposed conditions are absolutely normal and have LOAS (lack of ability syndrome).

Unless there are experienced practitioners to expose the myths for what they are, then these syndromes can survive for years and hundreds, if not thousands of greyhounds, are exposed to treatments that are often not only unnecessary, but often harmful.

There is a saying in Ireland that if you get the name as an early riser then you can sleep in for the rest of your life!

Reputations for curing non-existent conditions are easily earned, but they are false reputations, and if a person who has spent years in a university studying what is normal and abnormal and then many more years in day to day practical hands-on experience reinforcing that learning is sceptical of a fashionable diagnosis, then maybe so should you!

Lasting Effect showed the benefit of an extra kilo when he scored a runaway win in the Buffalo Cup over 600 metres at The Meadows recently. Raced by Tim Winters and trained at Wangaratta by Neville Tait, the strong middle distance chaser broke a five months drought and a 12 run sequence of outs with his good 34.66 victory. A very handy but lightly framed chaser, the son of Solve The Puzzle and Little Bibby had been racing at 29.5kg before his trainer opted to put some “meat” back on him. Lasting Effect is a real versatile chaser, who has now won over 525, 600 and 725 metres at The Meadows and also been successful at another six different tracks.

Unfortunately we had to call the trials of on Tuesday night at Angle Park so that crucial work could be completed in the lead up to their introduction and I apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused our participants. We could be looking at a starting date of the first week of January (Wednesday 4th January) for these races all going well remembering that they will only be conducted at (APD) meetings. There has been a slight change to the Grading Guidelines to accommodate the 388m at Angle Park aligning it with the 400m at Gawler. MARCH 17 FOR GREYHOUND OF THE YEAR With the changes to the Adelaide Cup series and other feature races the Greyhound of the Year Gala Function has been moved from January to Saturday night March 17 next year to be held in Chasers Restaurant. It’s shaping up to be another fantastic night where the great achievements in our Industry for 2011 are dually recognised. There will be a couple of new awards including the Run of the Year where people will be able to vote on the GRSA website and Sprinting Greyhound of the Year added to the normal awards, all highlighted by the SA Greyhound of the Year. There will be more information to follow in the coming weeks GREYHOUND OF THE MONTH — NOVEMBER 2011 Greyhound of the month for November was Kalden Mayhem for trainer Troy Murray. The voting panel of 7 were again unanimous in their decision for November, voting for Kalden Mayhem as the Greyhound of the Month now giving him 3 monthly awards for 2011. Kalden Mayhem now looks set to be the short priced favourite for the Greyound of the Year title at the end of the year after polling votes in 7 of the past 11 months. He started the month off in brilliant fashion with an outstanding performance

in the Group 3 Gawler Gold Cup. In front of a big crowd the son of Big Daddy Cool and Abbadale Gold looked to be in a hopeless position down the back straight in a high quality field when he was near last and looking racing room. Off the back straight Kalden Mayhem railed hard and then came to the outside turning for home producing one of the finest finishing bursts in the races history to grab his kennel mate Aston Thomas right on the line for an exhilarating victory. He then stepped up to the 600m at Angle Park winning as he liked by 5 lengths as a $1.22 favourite before finding plenty of trouble over the 515m at his next start finishing out of the placings. In late November Murray took his superstar to Wentworth Park for a crack at the Group 2 Summer Cup heats at Wentworth Park over the 720m. He started one of the favourites after drawing the red box however he didn’t fire and appeared to be injured after missing the placings in running seventh. In November Kalden Mayhem had four starts for two wins bringing his career to 61 starts for 28 wins and 16 placings and over $100,000 in stakemoney. RUN OF THE MONTH —NOVEMBER 2011 Another brilliant performance by Kalden Mayhem in the Gawler Gold Cup Final assured the Troy Murray trained superstar of his fifth “Run of the Month” award after he received awards in January, February, May and September. The panel all agreed that the son of Big Daddy Cool’s performance in the final where he came from an impossible position off the back straight to record a breathtaking victory was one that may never be seen again at the Gawler track let alone in a cracking Group 3 final. Kalden Mayhem’s winning run in the Gawler Cup Final was not only recognised locally but also won AGRA’S run of the month award for November considered better than all the performances from around Australia for that month. Congratulations to Kalden Mayhem and his connections for his outstanding performances. Neil Brown from AGRA has compiled a review of the Run of the Month for November won by Kalden Mayhem later in kennel capers.

THE Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Board has today announced a change that will create an exemption for eye drops to be used for greyhounds affected by Pannus. From 1 January 2012, greyhounds who are registered with GRNSW as being affected by Pannus will be allowed to race without penalty while undergoing treatment with Prednefrin Forte eye drops. The exemption for Prednefrin Forte eye drops will only be granted after owners and/or trainers follow a prescribed process which will formally record their greyhound as Pannus affected. Details are outlined in the attached Owner/Trainer notice. Pannus, or chronic superficial keratitis, is a common condition seen in greyhounds that affects the surface of the eye. If left untreated, it can cause visual impairment. GRNSW Chairman Professor Percy Allan AM said the exemption will only apply to greyhounds racing in NSW. “This exemption will allow greyhounds to continue to race while receiving treatment for what can be a very serious medical condition,” Professor Allan said. “I’d like to thank GRNSW Board Member Tom Green for bringing the issue to the Board’s attention and finding a prompt solution that will benefit the greyhound breed. GRNSW also confirmed today that Dr John Newell had accepted the role as Industry Veterinarian for the Hunter/Central Coast region and will commence in this role shortly. Dr Newell is an experienced gre yhound ve te r ina r ian who specialises in reproduction and has been heavily involved in the development of greyhound racing in Asia.

Further Media Information: GRNSW Communications Manager, Michael East 0406 374 479 Control of Pannus - Prednisolone Greyhound Racing NSW advises participants that following extensive urine analyses performed after treatment of greyhounds affected by Pannus with Prednefrin Forte eye d rops ( p r ed n i so l one ace t a t e ophthalmic suspension USP 1% manufactured and distributed by Allergan Inc in a 10 ml dropper), acceptable levels have been found, below which greyhounds will be allowed to race without penalty. The policy will take effect from 1 January 2012 and applies only to greyhounds racing in NSW. Participants are advised that greyhounds affected by Pannus must first be registered as such with GRNSW before being permitted to race whilst continuing treatment. T o b eco me re g i s t e r ed a greyhound must be presented to a GRNSW Veterinarian as soon as possible after diagnosis and while the condition is still evident. This will then be noted against the greyhound’s record kept with GRNSW. Greyhounds already being treated for Pannus, must provide a certificate to that effect from a qualified veterinarian. For participants inside a 200 km radius of a GRNSW Official Veterinarian, this provision will cease to operate as of 1 January 2014, after which all such greyhounds will have to be presented to a GRNSW Official Veterinarian for diagnosis. Greyhounds diagnosed as Pannus affected and kennelled outside of the 200 km radius of a GRNSW Veterinarian must be notified to GRNSW using the prescribed form signed by a qualified veterinarian. Notification of Pannus affected greyhounds must be done using the

prescribed form available on the GRNSW web site, www.thedogs.com.au under the Integrity section. Upon application the affected greyhound will be micro chipped, participants will have to return the greyhounds current registration certificate or identification card and a new identification card will be issued which will be clearly marked PAN as a distinguishing feature. Application of one drop of prednisolone forte eye drops to each eye, up to three times per day, should keep excretion levels below the acceptable degree. The exemption extended includes only greyhounds treated with Prednefrin Forte eye drops as described above and at the above dosage regime as a maximum. The use of any other substance or the presence of excessive levels of prednisolone and/or it’s metabolites in a urine sample taken from a Pannus registered greyhound may result in breaches of the prohibited substance rules. The changes to the rules are: Prohibited substances (to include); LR 1A (c) Prednisolone and it’s metaboli tes when present in greyhounds other than those registered with the Controlling Body pursuant to LR 1B. Exempted substances; LR 1B The prohibited substance prednisolone and it’s metabolites are exempted substances when present in samples taken from greyhounds registered with the Controlling Body as greyhounds affected by chronic superficial keratisis or superficial stromal keratisis (Pannus). Should any participant have any questions regarding this important policy, please contact G R N S W ’ s Integrity or Veterinary departments on (02) 8767 0500.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, December 15th, 2011 – Page 57 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

COULD be some major reshuffling of racing timeslots in the wind.

When Ballarat close for their “minor” track alterations and some cosmetic touches, which is scheduled to take place in March next year, expect Warrnambool to jump straight into their prized Wednes-day evening timeslot.

That news will surely buoy the lads down in the Western District, who have been suffering badly with poor patronage and a slump in both on and off-course turnover since they relinquished their former Wednesday night meeting.

Traralgon’s Glenview Park committee has opted to handover its Friday night twilight spot in preference for Warrnam-bool’s vacant Saturday’s twilight meeting.

Once the Bendigo refit has been completed, they will regain the Monday morning/afternoon shift, and switch from the usual Thursday twilight spot to Fri-days.

Beckley Park’s dual $8M complex will cater for racing on the prized Friday night slot and also conduct twilight meetings on Thursday afternoons.

Once the construction crews hand over Morshead Park back for racing, they will not only retain their usual Wednesday night fixture, but also apply for Monday’s Tier 3 meetings.

What is on the drawing board, and it only needs a rubber stamp from Tabcorp and Sky Channel, is an extra meeting to cater for more Tier 3 chasers on a new Tuesday timeslot, and Bendigo is the hot favourite to get that gig.

Warrnambool’s short tenure on a Wednesday night will be handed back to Ballarat, and the Western District club will have a crack at Sunday arvo (twilight) slot.

Eventually the seven day racing pro-gramming will look something like this: Monday - Ballarat Tier 3, Cranbourne and Shepparton; Tuesday - Bendigo Tier 3, Horsham and Warragul; Wednesday - The Meadows (N/P) Shepparton and Ballarat, Thursday - Warragul Tier 3, Geelong and Sandown Park. Friday - Bendigo, Geelong. Saturday - Traralgon, The Meadows. Sunday - Healesville (1/2 stakemoney N/P), Sandown (N/P), Sale and Warrnambool twilight.

Just hope we have enough cattle to maintain fields and there’s enough Stew-ards on the roster sheets.

My only suggestion to this major shake-up of racing timeslots deals with prizemoney, and the first club in the queue should be Healesville.

Straight track racing has surged since the introduction of TAB meetings, and the pools more than hold their own.

Racing for non-penalty half stake-money is an insult, and there deserves to be a decent boost to their prizemoney structure. Great gals THE huge crowd that attended The Meadows for The Great Chase final on Wednesday, November 23 certainly stretched the resources of the owners and trainers club.

The kitchen pumped out over 1,000 snags along with 600 chicken skewers to accommodate the hungry mouths, who enjoyed the outing immensely.

But not many people would be aware that the club is blessed with caring volun-teers, who give up their valuable time to assist in making this occasion one to remember.

Robyn Ketelaar, her cousin, Carole Gonard, Joy Davis, Hazel Griffen and Olympia Caruana gave up their day to man the various food stalls that dotted the venue.

Not forgetting the huge orders for chips, salads, chocolate mousse and various flavoured jellies, the ladies were marvellous at their tasks.

And it wasn’t a “oncer”. The group have been on-board for

the past four years and deserve to be recognized for their efforts.

Talking to some of the carers and tenants on the day, both parties look for-ward to this special treat, where some serious funding can be obtained if the numbers fall their way.

Well done girls, and to The Meadows for making this a special day for those less privileged than ourselves. Halted at Horsham BROADCASTER, Ron “The Hawk” Hawk-swell won’t forget a recent trip to Hor-sham in a hurry.

Deputising for mate and regular Wim-mera warbler, Roberto Testa, who was still enjoying the last few weeks of a ex-tended nine week break, “The Hawk” left home in plenty of time to secure one of the rare parking bays inside the track.

Seems there’s an edict and an em-bargo from the club barring broadcasters and others from parking inside the grounds.

They have to cart their gear nearly 100 metres, but that’s another story.

Knowing of the ban, “The Hawk” arrived before the local security officer had closed the access gate and parked his vehicle close and handy to the broad-cast area, ready for a quick getaway after the final race, which is usually about 7.30pm.

Everything went just fine, Ronnie packs up quickly, makes a beeline to the car and is ready to leave the Wimmera venue for the long drive back to his Wer-ribee home.

Seems since “The Hawk’s” last visit up to Horsham, the club had cut down a huge tree that used to offer plenty of shade to the regulars cars in this particu-lar area.

Well, when attempting to reverse out of this rather confined spot, “The Hawk” backs over what’s left of this former won-derful old tree.

There’s a decent stump still in the ground and, well you can envisage the rest.

“The Hawk’s” motor gets stuck, but he’s unaware of the stump and also why his car won’t move.

According to a local, it’s sitting up in the air with Ronnie revving the guts out of it, oblivious to the damage done under-neath to the chassis. A Top Gear enthusiast and driver he ain’t.

After a while the penny drops and he realizes his dilemma. Sheepishly he hops out and wonders what will I do now?

He’s stuck tight, and it takes six kind-hearted and strong locals to physically lift his car off the stump.

Unsure if there’s any structural dam-age done, he contacts the RACV, who take two hours to respond due to a couple of local accidents.

It’s now getting close to 10.00pm and he hasn’t moved an inch.

The car is eventually towed to the nearest garage, where it’s raised on a hoist and after a through inspection is given the all clear.

Not a night to remember for Hawk, but if he’s required to fill in at Horsham again, he’ll remember to obey the signs and not park in prohibited areas again. Down the aisle CONGRATULATIONS, to Chris Darmanin and Natalie Pace on their recent engage-ment.

Chris prepared the brilliant Hybrid Theory, who won the 2008 Laurels Clas-sic at Sandown Park, and she has a 17 months old litter to Surf Lorian ready to hit the tracks.

Natalie is no stranger to the racing game and is a competent and licensed harness driver, holding the reins for her dad’s team at Melton.

Both are looking forward to the wed-ding that’s planned for St. Monica’s in Moonee Ponds late next year.

Best wishes for the future from all at NGF. Not reading from the same prayer book GRNSW have advised their participants of some very important rules that were passed by members of Greyhounds Aus-tralasia (GA) board.

One that is sure to please punters is that as from January 1, Stewards will be able to declare a greyhound a non-runner if they had their chances in a race preju-diced by extraordinary circumstances. In short, Stewards will no longer be obliged to declare a ‘No Race’ when only one of a small number of greyhounds have had their chances prejudiced.

Stewards will still have the discretion to call a ‘No Race’ if too many grey-hounds have been affected by extraordi-nary circumstances.

This has been one of OTL’s pet sub-jects, and it’s good to see that sanity has finally prevailed.

How many times have you seen or heard punters bemoan the decision by stewards in the past to declare a ‘No Race’ because a fallen greyhound has turned around and run back into the field on the home turn.

Sometimes the disruption might only affect one greyhound, but under the past rules the stewards had no other option than to declare the race a null and void.

And the powerful body also took a decent swipe at Victoria’s stand-alone stance regarding the contentious “microchipping” issue.

The GRNSW teed-off with the follow-ing:

“In recent weeks there has been much industry conjecture as to the re-quirements greyhounds will need to race in Victoria from January 1, 2012.

Greyhound Racing Victoria has an-nounced plans to introduce a requirement that will prevent any greyhound that is not microchipped from racing at any track in the state.”

This would be out of step with the

rest of Australia and contrary to the na-tional position agreed in 2009 that pro-vided: “All greyhounds whelped from January 1, 2011 are to be micro-chipped until they retire.”

All existing stock will be allowed to race without a microchip until they retire.

From January 1, 2012 all racing grey-hounds will be eligible to race if identified by a microchip, and one ear brand or two ear brands for existing racing stock until they retire.

At the time of going to press, it is understood that Greyhounds Australasia has begun consultations with Greyhound Racing Victoria with a view to having the issue addressed as soon as possible.

Greyhound Racing NSW hopes a positive outcome can be achieved and will post more information as it comes to hand.

This issue threatens to divide Victoria and the rest of the states, with interstaters being ostracized from competing in the Garden State unless they comply with Victoria’s stand-alone rule.

It could get very messy, with inter-state owners and trainers taking legal action because as far as they are con-cerned, they have abided by the edict of Greyhounds Australasia, which is re-garded as the governing body of grey-hound racing in this country.

Money can’t buy friends but it can get you a better class of

enemy.

WHO needs enemies when you have mates who do this.

JETPETS boss, the benevolent Sandy Mathieson, was taken to task by his staff when he under-catered at their recent Christmas party.

Instead of the usual two prime movers arriving laden with sufficient alcohol to subdue the entire Colling-wood cheer squad, Sandy supported a “healthy drink less” culture, and opted for just one trailer load.

Needless to say, the grog ran out and the JETPETS and diehard Magpie fan was set upon by his loyal and thirsty team. Surgeons expect him to make a full recovery. Mummy’s boy: Sandy Mathieson.

MIGHT be prudent for Sky Channel back room staff to actually wait until the greyhounds have crossed the line before jumping the gun and putting up the wrong results. It infuriates the hell out of punters when the wrong results are posted. Another blooper appeared for the Warragul November 29 meeting in the sixth race. Fast breaker, Arvo’s Vixen came out running as usual and led for nearly the entire 460 metres distance. Sky Channel’s “trigger fingers” assumed that Arvo’s Vixen was

going to get the chocolates and went up with the 3-1-7 combination, only to embarrassingly alter their screen with the correct numbers of 1-3-7 after the fast finishing Lektra Fly collared his kennelmate, Arvo’s Vixen and went to the line with a length to spare in a quick 25.90. A length was the margin, which shows how premature the first image was posted. Both chasers gave Mark and Lisa Delbridge the quinella for the race. There are no prizes given for how quickly results can be posted, so take your time and do it properly the first time.

GREYHOUNDS Australasia (GA) is an organization comprising the nine greyhound racing jurisdictional bodies of Australia and New Zealand. F o r G A , ‘ C o m p u l s i v e R e s o l u t i o n s ’ a r e t h o s e acknowledged to be of National Importance. In November 2009, GA passed a ‘Compulsive Resolution’ regarding the micro-chipping of greyhounds: all existing racing stock will be allowed to race without a micro-chip until they retire. Conversely, Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) had resolved that all adult greyhounds (Victorian and interstate) needed to be micro-chipped in order to nominate for Victorian Events post January 01, 2012. Interstate participants are attracted to Victorian racing because it clearly has the highest levels of prize money, the greatest number of Group Events, the most up to date patron and greyhound facilities and demonstra ted a responsible approach to integrity and animal welfare issues. In recently reaffirming the position that all existing racing stock be allowed to race without a micro chip until they retire, GA members (other than GRV) have effectively deferred suggested microchip efficiencies for at least three years. Thus in having efficiently completed the micro-chipping of over 10,000 adult greyhounds in Victoria, GRV will be able to continue with its strategies to

observe the primary GA edict of ’maximizing returns to the industry’ which will occur through staged improvements in kennel ing procedures and removal of other associated manual procedures – all other jurisdictions will not. GRV, over a long period of time has demonstrated a willingness to engage in best practice across all areas of the business. I n expressing our gratitude to the Victorian participants for embracing the micro-chipping of their greyhounds over the last three months, we are disappointed that the GA approach doesn’t recognize the standards we believe the industry deserves. Given the espoused spirit of ‘cooperative approaches’ between GA members, GRV is also disappointed that relatively minor cooperation, which could have easily facilitated the GRV stated process, was not forthcoming. However, in the interests of cooperating with the whole (national) industry, GRV is now prepared to provide for all existing interstate racing stock to be allowed to race in Victoria until they retire. For Victorian participants, it is full speed ahead. Having completed the micro-chipping of 10,000 adult greyhounds in Victoria, GRV will continue to ‘maximize returns to the industry’ in conjunction with its new $3 million FastTrack computer platform which is due for completion in the first half of 2012. This will re-engineer a majority of GRV’s business operations.

Vee Ate Mate, who opened his account sat the Broadmeadows circuit with a 30.14 gallop, has won seven times with three plac-ings after 15 attempts.

Heading into the 600 metres Grade 5 as an outsider, it’s hard to fathom how a chaser with three wins and five placings at the track and distance could be rated at $22.80, espe-cially when considering he had a 34.97 PB.

But such was the case for Saint Bod-dsmith, who found the front from the three trap at boxrise and was never caught.

Trained by Scott Stefanos, the Hallucinate and White Whisky product ran slick sections of 8.97 and 22,23 then proved too good for De-structinator by two lengths in a new PB 34.85, while Beau Brummel wound up third, a length away,

LAST WEDNESDAY night’s Group 2 Pet-stock Ballarat Cup final was, at one point, in danger of being called off.

The track lights went out about 10 min-utes before the start while the dogs were in the parade area and they had to make their way back to the kennels.

Eventually the lights came back on, and it was thought that maybe a power surge had extinguished them, but needless to say; the meeting went ahead with the remaining events all put back one race.

In what is now the norm for a Ballarat Cup final, a star-studded field faced the starter.

However, there was a new dilemma in selecting the winner, as we pondered on which chasers would come through that elon-gated wait the best.

At boxrise it was almost a perfect start, with only Breckinridge being a bit tardily away and Mungo Man missing it by over a length.

Up And Away quickly got her head in front over Marmion and Lektra Express, with Bala Bale finding her feet quickly too.

Getting to the first mark, it was Up And Away in front in 6.53 but she had Lektra Express almost on equal terms, while on the fence behind them was Bala Bale, who had Marmion alongside, and Cape Hawke was the widest runner.

Lektra Express put the speed on, took over and raced around to the second mark in 11.24.

Cape Hawke whipped around the out-side to join Up And Away, who looked like she lost a length as Lektra Express took over,

and they had Marmion and Bala Bale just behind, both still in contention.

Lektra Express led them to the final bend but then came around the final turn four or five out from the fence, allowing Up And Away to regain most of the ground she had lost.

Cape Hawke, who’d never been on the track, was trying to improve his post but was wider than the leader, whilst on his inside Bala Bale was poised to stake her claim.

Just after straightening for the run in it was a race in four, but Up And Away, with the advantage of the inside, drew level with Lek-tra Express.

Despite finding the front a fair way from the line, the others hadn’t rolled over nor hoisted the white flag.

In the end it was the $6.80 elect, Up And Away that had pinched it.

The Lara based chaser passed the judge in Best Of Night 25.23, which equalled her PB, and took her record on the track to four wins and a third from all five runs.

Rank outsider, Lektra Express ($39.50) stuck to his task valiantly to claim second money, going down by just three quarters of a length while there was a similar gap to his kennelmate, Bala Bale ($8.00) in third spot.

Cape Hawke ($1.80 fav) was fourth home ahead of Dyna Steal ($15.30), Mungo Man ($19.50), Breckinridge ($24.10) and Marmion ($5.80).

Up And Away, a daughter of Where’s Pedro and On Shore, is owned by Ann Sin-nott, and this was the fawn chaser’s third Group win, sitting alongside The Great Chase

at Group 2 level and the Group 1 Laurels. With 16 wins and 16 placings in 45

starts, Up And Away has now put $173,530 in the bank.

It was back to back Ballarat Cup wins for trainer, Graeme Bate, as he won the 2010 version with Greta Bale.

“She went great,” remarked Graeme. “It was a brilliant run.”

“She led, was passed then had to work very hard to stay in it, and then had to run down a very strong dog to win.”

“It was very pleasing to see her do it like that.”

“I’m absolutely rapt for the dog and for the connections; it was lovely to win it I can assure you of that.”

“She’s a great little bitch,” added Graeme;,“ and she’s come back really well.”

“She was doing it tough for a while, having had a few setbacks and a few injury problems, but she’s overcome them and I feel she’s back racing as good as ever.”

Rated on top at $1.90 from box three, the black chaser defeated Mr. Chauvinist ($21.70) by five and three quarter lengths, with Hiavack-ova ($30.80) a head away third.

A winner of four of his five starts, Joshua was the first leg of a litter double for owner trainer, Ron McCullagh.

Fully Advanced completed the litter dou-ble for Ron by recording 25.95 to score in a 460 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

The son of Collision and Okay Supreme came from box seven as favourite at $1.80 to beat Barry Blowout ($12.50) by three quarters of a length, with Best Perfume ($5.00) picking up third money, a length and three quarters in arrears.

After lining up in box six as equal favourite at $2.60, the son of Collision and Clementine Bale beat Cooney’s Medal ($4.10) by two and a half lengths, with Jessina ($6.50) five lengths further astern.

Allen Lennox, who’s won eight of his 44 starts, is owned by Jan Wheeler and was the last of five winners for trainer, Graeme Bate.

Judge’s overtime Grafton December 8 PUNTERS were having trouble coming up with the likely winner of the Betfair Blue Paws Su-per Series final at the Grafton greyhounds on Thursday, and as it turned out, so to did the judge, with a dead heat being the final result.

The greyhounds Mr. Thurston and Phan-tom Alex went across the line locked together and could not be separated.

Boxrise saw the John Free trained Phan-tom Alex jump straight to the front, with many hailing it as the winner from that position, but the Lesley Green trained Mr. Thurston had other ideas and chased tenaciously to draw level right on the line, thus sharing the spoils.

The time for the 407 metres journey was smart at 23.13, and both runners can be fol-lowed with confidence at their next few starts at Grafton.

Ettrick based trainer, Terry Jordan is enjoying a purple patch of form at Grafton lately, with his “Lyndan” named greyhounds always sure to feature prominently, and he took training honours on Thursday with a win-ning double.

Terry looks to have a very smart type, Lyndan Park Lad, who impressively took out the J & C Bullen Roofing Stake in a fast 23.00.

Lyndan Park Lad got a nice sit in behind the pace of Scissor Queen before overpower-ing that runner in the home straight to score by one and a half lengths.

However, the margin could have been bigger and the time for the 407 metres faster had he not checked off the leader’s heels upon straightening for the run home.

The second leg of the double was Rever-end Lyndan, who took out the final event of the day, the Sedgers Reef Hotel 5th Grade over 407 metres.

Reverend Lyndan was always handy to

the pace and did enough in a blanket finish, defeating Five Below by a nose, with a half head to third placed Are Vee, clocking 23.54.

Not taking anything away from the winner, but the run of Five Below had to be seen to be believed, as he came from the tail of the field in the home straight.

The Phil McLennan Earthmoving Stake was one of many upset results on the day.

But it was good reward for the patience of the connections of Merlin’s Web, who had previously had seven starts for not even a placing, yet last Thursday put his best foot forward.

The Chris Gill trained runner led from start to finish, defeating Vibrant Cloud, who ap-peared to be the unlucky runner and Tranquil Mitzy in 18.03.

The other 305 metres event of the day was the Clarence Valley Sheds 5th Grade and that was taken out nicely by Not In Public for Stephen Casey.

Not In Public showed a clean set of pews in running 17.60, with Birthday Joy and Surf Blaster filling the minors.

Bruce Caden was confident of the chances of his greyhound, Knapford prior to the running of the Lochinvar Marlow @ Stud 5th Grade.

And his confidence was spot-on when Knapford scored well.

Knapford ran a smart 8.43 first section before recording the overall time of 23.27.

Race favourite, Karanne Agent ran on well for second, with Apollo Run third.

Time honours for the 407 metres journey went to the Dave Irwin trained Bralyn Midge, which recorded 22.88, with that time high-lighted by a new first section record of 8.27 to the first turn, bettering the previous 8.28 that was held by Orara Flash.

Dark And Stormy ran a cheeky race for second, while Just The Phantom finished third.

Other winners on the day were Gogo Blaster for Sonia Kempshall in the Beaure-paires Maiden, Elly Mae Trick for Darryl Schafer in the Carters Canine Capers (480m) and Sterling Arrow in the Henwoods Hot Bread Shop Stake. - Grafton Guru
