Master of Organization Development ProgramInstitute for Organizational Effectiveness

Welcome to Nexus AfricaYou are invited to participate in this unique experience where powerful

approaches to collaborative change, selected from a repertoire of more than

60 methodologies broadly referred to as large-group methods/ interventions,

whole-system change, or large-scale change, will be used to illustrate how

organisations and communication have been and can be transformed to tackle

21st century challenges.

The purpose of Nexus Africa is to bring leaders, practitioners, activists, scholars

and students together to advance the field of whole systems change* and in

doing so, address critical challenges and opportunities in our world.

* Whole System Change focuses on methods for collaboration on a large scale - bringing together communities and organizations to co-create futures that they take action upon. These methods are broadly referred to as large-group interventions, whole-system change or large-scale change.

The tree features in many myths and tales of African oral tradition,

often portrayed as an ancestral symbol of wisdom, authority and custom.

For centuries it has formed a venue for political and social meetings,

where people met to discuss and resolve issues facing them and

their communities. We invite you to pay homage to

this tradition by joining us underneath our symbolic tree in Africa,

the cradle of humanity, where we can once again be reminded

of the origins of collaboration.

The first Nexus for Change conference was hosted by the Bowling Green State University, Ohio in 2007 and created a platform for people from across the world to share what they knew about whole systems and participative change. The conference has since been hosted yearly, and today Nexus for Change remains one of the leading ways for change practitioners to connect and share their learning regarding whole system change.

This year, Nexus for Change convenes in South Africa, and provides an unprecedented opportunity for practitioners from around the world to attend a conference of this magnitude, focussing exclusively on whole system change, on African soil.

Take a moment to imagine…The potential we could achieve when leaders, practitioners, activists, scholars and students come together to advance the field of whole system change and in so doing address the

critical challenges and opportunities on our continent and in our world.

Just think about the possibilities if we began to share stories from Africa by showcasing unique

African experiences and successes in whole system change.

Imagine the Africa we would create for our children if we began to apply what we learned in real time to

issues in Africa as we co-create our future.

Imagine the outcome if we could learn about whole system change methods and the latest thinking in

this field, and experience the methods as we learn about them.

The endless possibilities if change practitioners began to take a stand to make a difference in critical real projects.

What would be the outcome if we remembered how to collaborate and not compete?

Could you envisage a brighter future by engaging in dialogue as opposed to debate?

What could be achieved by building a sustainable community of practice of passionate people that have a stake in the future of whole system change and who are committed

to shaping our future?

If these ideas speak to you, ask yourself “Am I one of the people who needs to be in the room for these efforts to succeed?” If so, we’re counting on you to show up!

For tomorrow belongs to the people who

prepare for it today.- African Proverb

You are invited…to participate in this unique experience where a number of powerful approaches

to change, selected from the Whole System Change repertoire of more than

60 methodologies, will be used to transform organisations and communities as

they tackle 21st century challenges.

Throughout the conference, delegates will

have an authentic African experience through

informative and experiential activities including

the art of African storytelling presented by Gcina

Mhlope, an incredible understanding of African

rhythm and collaboration with Drum Cafe and

the opportunity to meet and network with

fellow delegates. What will you experience? An international planning and hosting team consisting of practitioners and researchers, leaders and

educators have been working together over the past few months to collectively design a dynamic

and interactive agenda with a truly African flavour.

ConferenceThe Nexus Africa conference, to be held from 12 – 14 September, will be guided by a vibrant and

purposeful agenda, and provide you with the opportunity to experience and actively participate in a

number of approaches, broadly referred to as Whole System Change.

These include:

Appreciative Inquiry to focus collaborative efforts among people seeking to create a better world

A Drum Café experience to build understanding and widen the possibilities of what can be

achieved

Open Space Technology to connect our work to critical issues

World Café conversations for connecting compelling stories from our experiences on the African

continent

Indigenous African collaborative practices that can be developed as African contributions to the

field of Whole System Change

By focussing on methods for collaboration on a large-scale, Whole System Change has the ability to bring communities and organizations together to co-create their futures through action.

Artists from the Drum Cafe will entertain

delegates during the conference with their

unique African sound.

Conference delegates will experience the deep

tradition of African storytelling with well-known

actor, playwright and author, Gcina Mhlope.

Transformational Change in Human Systems: Moving from Strategy to Action10 September (8.30 am – 4.30 pm)

Open Space Technology: Self-organisation at Work11 September (8.30 am – 4.30 pm)

Workshop 1 Title: Transformational Change in Human Systems: Moving from Strategy to ActionHow do you bring people together to pursue possibilities when faced with upheaval? As organizations, communities, and other social systems experience

Peggy co-founded Journalism That Matters (JTM) in 2001 with three career journalists – Chris Peck, Cole Campbell, and Stephen Silha. JTM generates innovations by convening, connecting, and inspiring the diverse pioneers who are shaping the emerging news and information ecology.

increased uncertainty, a framework for engaging with disruption and the unknown becomes key to meeting today’s challenges. This interactive workshop uses a variety of conversational practices drawn from Open Space Technology, the World Café, Appreciative Inquiry and other processes to explore a pattern, practices, and principles for working with transformative change. It is designed for those who wish to understand more about change in organizations, communities, or other social systems, such as health care or education.

Participants will learn a theory of change grounded in nature’s way of changing—“emergence”—in which order arises out of chaos, discover a possibility-oriented relationship to disruption and upheaval, take away practices that can be applied immediately to challenging, disruptive situations and explore a set of “operating principles” for successfully engaging emergence.

Workshop 2 Title: Open Space Technology : Self-organisation at WorkFor generations, humans have organized themselves to get things done. When people come together, clarify their purpose, organize themselves to explore and act on what matters to them, great ideas, inspired performance, and sustained activity follow. By naming deeply human patterns that invite people to take responsibility for what they love as an act of service, Harrison Owen, created Open Space Technology. It enables groups of 5-2,500 to self-organize to handle complex and important issues, inviting useful leadership and structure to emerge. The purpose of this workshop is to grow your capacity to “open space” so that people connect and create. It introduces you to theory, practice and spirit of Open Space.

In addition to experiencing Open Space Technology, we’ll cover:

• Open Space theory, typical outcomes, and elements of design

• Basics of Open Space practice – role of the practitioner, working with a sponsor

• Information on pre-work - choosing a theme, inviting participation, preparing the space

• insights into opening space: doing an event, handling follow up

She specializes in the design and delivery of innovative approaches that engage and align people, processes, structures, and systems with strategy.

She has extensive experience supporting complex projects and change initiatives in large systems with special expertise in working with government and NGO organizations.

Workshop Title: Tapping The Power of Polarities: How to Get the Energy in Your Organization Working For You

The research is clear – organizations that know how to tap the power of polarities out perform those that don’t.

Polarities show up in organizations as different points of view:Should we be centralizing or decentralizing? Is it better to focus locally or globally? Will we be more successful by creating new markets or being the leader in existing markets?Organizations struggle to solve these problems from an “either/or” mindset, leading to chronic conflict, turf battles and wasted energy. Why? They’re not problems that can be solved. They’re polarities with energy that needs to be tapped well over time.

In this session you will learn how to:

“See Them” - Identify critical polarities that need to be managed well for you to succeed

“Map Them” – Create custom maps reflecting your organization’s unique challenges and opportunities

“Tap them” – Measure how well you are currently tapping these key polarities and what you need to do to get their energy working for you instead of against you.
