My heart leaps up when I beholdA Rainbow in the sky:So was it when my life began; So is it now I am a man;So be it when I shall grow old,Or let me die!The Child is father of the man;And I wish my days to beBound each to each by natural piety. - William Wordsworth, 1802. Here is a play that we all know something about. Or will.I can only hope that Wordsworth’s wishes are realized for us all.Thank you for joining us. - David Cecsarini

B IOGR APHIES

FLORA COKER (Peggy)Flora was born and raised in Virginia and came to Milwaukee in 1970 to join Theatre X. She was a member of that company until it closed in 2004. She

is delighted that David has invited her back to Next Act, where she appeared in DEAR ESTHER in 2004. Most recently, Flora joined the cast of the Optimist Theatre’s premier production of free Shakespeare in the park as Gonzalo in THE TEMPEST. If you catch the Milwaukee Film Festival coming soon, you might see Flora in a cameo appearance in Baraboo by Mary Sweeny starring Ruth Schudson and Brenda DeVita.

LAURA GRAY (Barb)Some of her most memorable theatrical experiences include: goofily running up and down stairs with Mark in Madison Rep’s NOISES

OFF, stage and dressing room time with Mary during Milwaukee Shakespeare’s JU-LIUS CAESAR and Chamber’s SWEETEST SWING IN BASEBALL, and being Flora’s other self in Next Act’s DEAR ESTHER.

MARY MACDONALD KERR (Ellen)FOUR PLACES is Mary’s 10th appearance in Next Act Theatre’s productions. Previous roles include Grace in FAITH

HEALER, Maggie in RED HERRRING, Frankie in VOICE OF THE PRAIRIE, Terry in SIDEMAN and Sylvia in SYLVIA. Mary has directed for Next Act as well, including GOING TO ST. IVES and last season’s PURGATORIO. Other favorite roles in Milwaukee include Lina in THREE DAYS OF RAIN and Sally in VOICE OF THE TURTLE for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Anna in BURN THIS for Renaissance Theatreworks and Barbara DiMarco in SHEAR MADNESS for Milwaukee Rep. Mary will be di-recting BIG BOYS for Next Act later this season.

ABOUT THE PL AY WRIGHT—JOEL DR AKE JOHNSON

Joel Drake Johnson is one of the newest members of Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theater Playwrights Ensemble. The critically acclaimed, Jeff nominated FOUR PLACES was produced by Victory Gardens in the spring of 2008. His earlier works at VG, BEFORE MY EYES and THE END OF THE TOUR, were also Jeff-nominated for Best New Play and all three plays were directed by Sandy Shinner, Victory Gardens’ Associate Artistic Director. FOUR PLACES was subsequently produced in LA by The Rogue Machine Theatre where,

under the direction of Robin Larsen, it garnered more critical acclaim.

Johnson has won three Illinois Arts Council grants including one for A BLUE MOON, which was first produced at Chicago Dramatists featuring Mark Ulrich and was Jeff nominated for best new work. He got his start as a writer at Chicago’s critically acclaimed Econo-Art Theater, which (under the leadership of Lynn Baber, Barb Reeder and Marc Silvia) produced such plays as BEAUTIFUL DREAMER. His other plays include AS THE BEAVER, first produced by Zebra Crossing, and THE FALL TO EARTH (Rick Snyder, dir.) which premiered at Steppenwolf Theatre and featured Tony Award Winner Rondi Reed. It was subsequently produced at The Penguin Rep, directed by Joe Brancato and featuring Tony Award Winner Michelle Pawk. Steppenwolf later produced A BLAMELESS LIFE (Anna Shapiro, dir.) and TRANQUILLITY WOODS (Sandy Shinner, dir.) as part of their 2005 and 2007 First Look Repertory.

He has taught playwriting at Northwestern University, DePaul University and Adlai Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. He lives in Chicago and New Buffalo, Michigan where he has been working on three new plays: THE FIRST GRADE which was produced by the Aurora Theatre Company in the winter of 2010; A GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED which was produced by Victory Gardens in the summer of 2010 and featured Kevin Anderson and Fran Guinan; THE BOYS ROOM, a part of Northlight Theatre’s Interplay and Steppenwolf Theatre’s First Look reading series and now a part of Victory Gardens’ 2010-11 season. Johnson is a member of PEN AMERICA and the Dramatists Guild.
