Brears who doesn’t ride motorbikes —so naturally he is keeping it.His wife Jenny recalls the shopping

trip where her husband filled in theentry form for the bike — he wascomplaining about having to go withher for the groceries.

He’s not complaining now — in facthe had a mate ride the bike home forhim and he’s booking in to get is bikelicence so he can eventually ride it.The alternative prize was groceries

to the value of $200 per week for a year,but Mr Brears says although he’s neverridden any bike, the idea of keeping theHarley appeals to him.The promotion was run by the three

models is now on sale, and Idrove Fairview Motors’Fiesta Zetec (pictured onthe cover) — with newfeatures such as Ford’soptional all-new six-speedPowerShift automatic trans-mission mated to its 1.6 litreDuratec DOHC petrolengine.The transmission gives

all the versatility of anautomatic with the econ-omy of a manual trans-mission.The standard trans-

Caution urged onWaikato roads

Police and the Regional Transport Committee areurging motorists in the region to take extraspecial care on waikato roads as the toll nears

last year’s total.Speed and alcohol continue to be the main

‘human’ crash-related issues, often combined withyoung drivers using vehicles in breach of licenceconditions, a recent report to the committee said.Committee chairman Cr Norm Barker, of Environ-

ment Waikato, and Waikato road policing managerLeo Tooman said the statistics were a stark reminderof the need for increased caution on the roads as theholiday season approaches.‘‘So far this year more than 60 people have

already died in the Waikato as a result of roadcrashes.‘‘That’s way too many.‘‘For each of those killed, hundreds more are left

grieving their loss.‘‘Please spare a thought for the many thousands

of people in our communities who will be sufferingwithout their loved ones this Christmas.‘‘We’ve seen enough pain and suffering this year

as a result of speeding, drugged, alcohol-impairedand fatigued drivers‘‘We all have a responsibility to protect those we

love by being fit to drive every time we get into avehicle. If we each play our part we can all enjoy asummer free of any more road deaths.’’Cr Barker and Mr Tooman advised motorists to

take extra care on journeys, to plan their trips and totake their time getting there.‘‘Rest before you go and take plenty of breaks

along the way.’’The public is also reminded of their host

responsibilities when holding social functions.WAIKATO DRIVING CRASH FACTS

· Excessive speed is the cause of a quarter of allfatal crashes in the Waikato.· Drugs and alcohol are factors in over a quarter of

all fatal crashes in the Waikato. At the legal bloodalcohol limit, a driver is about sixteen times as likelyto be involved in a fatal crash as the same driver witha zero blood alcohol level.· For every 100 drunk drivers or riders killed in

road crashes, 55 of their passengers and another 35sober road users die with them.· Fatigue is responsible for an estimated 12% of

road deaths in the Waikato. Fatigue can be alleviatedby resting well before journeys, taking regular breaksand powernaps, and sharing the driving.

Available right now is the 2011Nissan Micra — a look at howclever thinking is shaping our

motoring future.Nissan has taken its small car,

retained or improved fuel economy,manoeuvrability and looks (this looksmuch better than the old model) andgiven it more room, more featuresand more power.The Micra is built on a brand new

Nissan platform destined to featurein other models, and possiblyRenaults.Driving the newest Nissan Micra

ST from Excelsior Nissan it was easyto experience the improvements.The 1500cc engine makes 75kW of

power and 136Nm of torque, driventhrough a four speed automatic.It has plenty of go because

although the new Micra is bigger, it isas light as the old model because ofclever thinking.Thinking such as boomerang

shaped roof indents that look likedesign features, but do in fact stiffenthe roof meaning cross roof bracingcan be lighter, and the lightergearbox.The car is aimed at the small car

buyer who also wants to get out andabout on the open road.In fact Nissan realise the Micra is

already quite popular, but more usedimports (March) were sold than NewZealand newmodels and Nissan wantto reverse that by making the choicesimple.There are two models, the ST and

Ti, and both have much the samestuff.The Ti gets extras that make life a

bit easier.The new model offers more room

for people and bags or shopping.Around town it is so nippy and

agile you can simply go anywhere.With one of the smallest turningcircles of its class the three point turncan be a thing of the past.On the open road its willing

enough and stable and secure.Combined claimed fuel economy

is 6.6l/100km, so with a 41 litre tankthe range is over 600 kilometres

between fills.Even though the Micra feels fine

on the open road, I would guess youwould want to be stopping for astretch and a cup of tea rather thandriving a tankfull at one go. At leastwith that fuel economy you’ll be ableto afford a cuppa.The Micra is also a four door — a

claimed five seater, which on thewhole is fair enough.The rear does look pretty roomy for

a small car, and there is still somespace behind the seats for a bag ortwo.The Micra offers a good enough

sound system, with easy to usecontrols and the ability to play MP3format and attach an auxilliary device.Safety isn’t compromised either,

there is a full complement of airbagsand brake and stability controlfeatures.The price of the newmodels is very

competitive, less than the model itsucceeds and claimed to be under thecost of major competitors in thisclass.It seems Nissan are serious about

the fourth generation Micra in NewZealand.

Iknow this month’s feature carpretty well, it’s my son Ryan’s 1980MkII Ford Escort Estate he has

owned since getting his licence in2003.His car has been on the build since

2004 — a slight altercation with aconcrete object necessitating somework.ESKYMO came from Hamilton

after being advertised in The Loot.It was a standard orange 1300cc

Escort with the four speed manual.The first build involved panel and

paint (in the new blue), lowering withsuper low fronts and blocks on therear, 15’’ wheels, refurbished originalinterior, but in black instead of brown,and rebuilt Escort engine.Ryan wasn’t happy with the power,

or lack of it, and did his research for areplacement engine.

He wanted an engine that would fitthe Escort’s standard small enginebay, was reliable and made goodpower.The solution, Toyota’s 4AGE for

rear wheel drive. The engine is aDOHC, 16 valve, injected 1600cc with afive speed manual.Ryan, who is an auto electrician,

and his boss Nigel Pitcon did all thewiring and special electrics for thenew engine, custom dash and soundsystem. The escort also has twoelectric fuel pumps and a surge tankto keep the injection system happyand a full keyless entry, electrictailgate release and security system.Fabrication of the new engine and

gearbox mounts, plus the numerousother engineering modifications, werein the capable hands of KerryWoodhead of JK Fabrication.A custom driveshaft to mate the

Toyota transmission to an EscortSport diff was made in Hamilton andGary Beckham of Te Awamutu Pitstopcustom made the exhaust from theheaders to the tip. An aluminium

radiator and electric fan keep theengine cool, and extra stopping poweris via a Mitsubishi master cylinderand Hillman Hunter remote booster toupgraded disc front and drum rear.The second build also saw a huge

improvement in the suspension sys-tem — with upgraded fittings, resetrear springs dropping the car 75mmat the back and custom frontadjustables made by Ryan andKerry.The new engine makes about100kW — about three times morethan the old 1300.Future plans include a bodywork

and paint tidy up — and maybe aturbo and aftermarket computer.
