Issue 3 – Term 1 - Week 6 Principal’s Report It has been an incredible few weeks for our students here at Gladstone with lots of adventures, experiences and fun on our agenda! We are very proud to share the great success of our Small Schools Relay team who competed at the North Coast PSSA Swimming Carnival last Wednesday representing the Lower North Coast PSSA region. Congratulations to Skyann, Hugo, Ashlee and Bailey who all showcased their very best efforts and came in a close second place to secure them a spot to represent the entire North Coast PSSA region at the State PSSA swimming carnival in Sydney in early April. Congratulations and well done! We are all extremely proud of your efforts and are looking forward to your next outstanding performance in the pool! Thank you to the families who took timeout to travel to Coffs Harbour and supervise the team. Our SRC took on the epic task of catering lunch for our entire school this week, and did an amazing job. Thank you to Mrs Scullion for coordinating this student led initiative and to Michelle for supporting and organizing on the day. The burgers and shakes were delicious and we are all excited to enjoy another meal deal later this term! This week we also had a visit from our friends from Kinchela who came across to join in for our gymnastics, yoga and wellbeing workshops with Kim and Connor from Dance Fever. We hope to welcome Dance Fever back to our school in term 3 for our sports program. Our Clean Up Gladstone morning was well received by our Gladstone community, we took time out to clean up the streets around our school and Riverside Park. Thank you to Mrs Pugh for coordinating our Clean up Australia program. Last week we sent home an Expression of Interest Form for boys in year 4, 5 & 6 to participate in Hip Hop Dance. If you haven’t already sent the EOI form back please do so as soon as possible, this session begins this coming week at Smithtown PS. Page 1 Planning for our major excursions are well underway, information will be sent home to our stage 2 and 3 students as soon as it becomes available. Year 5 & 6 will be traveling to Canberra and year 3 & 4 will be heading to Forster. As the planning processes are well underway an Expression of Interest will be sent home in the coming weeks, this will determine the interest and the number of students attending. Please take some time to consider this opportunity for your child. The cost for these excursions are determined by the number of students attending, some families have expressed that they would like to begin paying the excursions off, families are most welcome to send in or use our POP system to begin payments in advance for these excursions. Information will be sent home as soon as it comes to hand. We have a busy few weeks coming up in our classrooms. Thank you to our families who have taken time to contact us with an explanation when your child is expected to be absent from school. This is imperative to our record keeping and can be done by calling or visiting our office, sending in a note or using our school stream app. We hope to see many of you at our assembly next Friday 13 th March at 2:15 pm in our Raptors room, we will also be hosting our first P&C meeting for the year straight after school on Friday afternoon. We strongly encourage all of our families to attend. In our classrooms… Infants Class

Student of the week: Lincoln Donnelly Merit Awards: Mia Grose for her amazing effort with her writing. William Westerman for being a helpful friend and always using his manners.

Another great fortnight in the Owlets room with lots of fun learning adventures happening! Thank you to our families who have sent in delicious and creative fruit and vegie platters to share, it has been great trying new and different fruits and vegies and a great way to promote fruit and vegie week! We have continued writing our imaginative stories on our people and pictures from the past, we are very proud of our work and are excited to share them with you when they are finished. In maths we have been learning how to make even groups by sharing objects and looking at multiplication and division strategies. We have been learning how to skip count by using body percussion, and making up clapping patterns, this is great fun and can be done at home to continue the great work we are doing in the classroom.

Mrs Smith

Primary Class

Student of the week: Lily Grose Merit Awards: William Calleja for trying his best and pushing himself in Mathematics. Ashton Donnelly for his fair and respectful attitude in all areas.

What a fortnight it's been in the Raptors class these last two weeks!! We've been working hard to publish our stories about how our little frog escaped the well. If you've been following along on Class Dojo, this was a story inspired by Li Cunxin's true life story in his children's book "The Peasant Prince". We all worked very hard to write with super descriptive words and publish using different colours, fonts and sizes to portray our message. Mathematics has been a busy time looking at subtraction, multiplication and area with students focusing on having a deep understanding of the basics.

SRC NEWS On Wednesday we had our first meal deal for the term. A few of our members were busy representing our school at the swimming carnival, but we were very thankful for the students who put their hands up to help. The students cooked, prepared, served and even washed up and packed away. Our first meal deal was very successful and were very thankful to all the students who supported this program.

The SRC would like to thank Michelle for all her assistance with our preparation.

Mrs Scullion

Library News Our Library is looking fabulous and is up and running for borrowing. Congratulations Owlets who are remembering to return their borrowed books by Thursday. It would good if parents could encourage their children to borrow regularly. Please remember that the Library van comes to our school on even weeks…5/3/20, 19/3/20 and 2/4/20 this term.

Mrs Pugh

The Big Vegie Crunch The big Vege Crunch was on Thursday 5th March. Students participated in a National event at 10 am then later in the day using fruit and veg to create an insect display. A huge thankyou goes out to the school community for supporting this healthy initiative by sending in amazing platters to share throughout the past few weeks. It has been great giving our student the opportunity to try new and exciting fruits and vegetables and have them presenting in fun and exciting ways! Thank you to all of our families who supported our fruit and vegie platters and shared with our students.
