SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTI have been fortunate to take on the role of Relieving Deputy Principal for the remainder of 2021 for Ms Taylor while she is Relieving Principal in Ms Conroy's absence. I will be looking after Year 7, 9 and 11 and have an open-door policy where students are welcome to come and raise any of their problems or concerns with me.

School Uniform As it becomes colder, Tweed River High School is reinforcing the no hoodie policy. We are asking all parents to support the school to ensure you are sending your children to school in the correct uniform. The uniform for the Junior School is a black or bottle green jumper with no hood. For our senior cohort it is a black jumper with no hood. School jumpers, along with other uniform items, can be purchased on site at our Uniform Shop on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 8am – 11 am.

Subject SelectionThe Year 10 into 11 Subject Selection information evening was held last Monday and Year 10 students are now in the process of making online subject selections for Year 11, 2022. All Year 10 students should be seeking advice from parents, teachers, Mr. Williams the Careers Advisor and senior students to help them in making informed subject choices.

NSW Representative SportCongratulations to Jasmin Morrissey for her selection in the NSW CHS Open Girl’s Hockey side. This is a tremendous result for one of our school leaders.

Parliament House VisitOur School Captains, along with the School Captains from the Tweed 5 (T5) High Schools, visited Parliament House in Sydney on Tuesday. A big thank you to Mrs Mainey for organising this event and accompanying the students.

Building WorksThe building works are ongoing at Tweed River High School. The next stage of building works will be the relocation of the library to a demountable at the front of the school. We endeavour to have the Library up and operational as soon as possible into Term 3.

Reports, Awards and CeremoniesAs we draw closer to the end of Semester One, staff are working extremely hard to finalise marks and reports for students. Can you please work with your child to ensure that all student work has been caught up on so that students gain the best mark available to them.

Year Assembly presentations will take place on June 18 to celebrate our student’s outstanding efforts and achievements. Our major academic and sporting awards assemblies will take place in Week 2, Term 3 to further celebrate student success. Our NAIDOC Ceremony will take place on July 20 in the SEC; a rich celebration of our indigenous culture.

Transition between classesStudents need to move quickly between classes so that learning can continue to take place in an uninterrupted manner. The 5 minute warning bell indicates that all students should be in their classrooms and ready to learn.

Mr Terry Simpson, Relieving Deputy Principal

LEADERS VISIT GOVERNMENT HOUSEOn Tuesday 8 June our School Captains, Luke Jefferies and Jasmin Morrissey, travelled to Sydney with other captains from our T5 for the annual "Secondary Schools Leadership Program". They had a fantastic day meeting the Govenor, Margaret Beazley, at Government House and also met with the local members of parliament at Parliament House.

We also managed a quick visit to Darling Harbour for some necessary touristy pics...and don't believe them if they tell you that my navigation skills are lacking (I'm sure we only walked an extra 500m than we needed to!). They were excellent representatives of the school. Ms Mainey, SRC Co-ordinator

Tweed Heads Schools Works notification May 2021

Tweed Heads South Public School and Tweed River High School are being upgraded to provide new permanent teaching spaces and core facilities. The following works will be taking place at the schools in association with the upgrade projects.

Installation of temporary library and learning spaces at Tweed River High School

From mid-May 2021, weather permitting, work will commence to install a temporary library, general learning spaces, and woodwork room at Tweed River High School. Once operational, these temporary buildings will allow the school to vacate buildings that will be refurbished or redeveloped as part of the upgrade project.

The temporary buildings will be located in the north east corner of the site, between Blocks H and K and Heffron Street.

Initial work will include installation of fencing, locating of services and construction of footings and piers. It is expected that the work will be completed within six weeks of commencement, weather permitting.

The majority of construction vehicles and equipment will enter the site at the commencement of works and remain on site in a parking area until work is completed. A section of the boundary fence along Heffron Street will be temporarily removed to provide access and replaced while not in use. A crane will be used to lift the temporary buildings into place.

Establishment of site compound and construction headquarters

From late May 2021, a site compound and construction headquarters for both the Tweed Heads South Public School and Tweed River High School upgrade projects will be established. The compound will be located on Tweed River High School grounds to the south of Tweed Heads South Public School, and will include site offices, contractor amenities and storage facilities.

Work to establish the compound will involve truck movements and the use of cranes and excavators. This work is expected to be completed by early June 2021, weather permitting. Key activities will include:

Installation of fencing and tree protection zones

Site levelling and laying of road base and footpaths

Installation of sheds and containers

Excavation and connection of services including temporary sewer, power and water

Fit out of offices and amenities.

Vehicle access to the site compound during and after establishment will be via Oxley Street. There will be no vehicle access from Heffron Street.

Following establishment of the site compound, a construction area will be established around Block L at Tweed River High School, which will be refurbished to provide new science laboratories and learning

Dear Parents, Carers and Supervisors

Recently we have seen an increase in reports that students may be using e-cigarettes (otherwise known as ‘vaping’) across local schools and in the community. We take this issue seriously due to the negative health effects vaping can have on young people, who are often unaware of the risks associated with the practice.

Vaping is the act of inhaling a vapour produced by an e-cigarette or electronic vaporizer. The vapour can contain nicotine and other substances and may expose users to chemicals and toxins which are harmful to health. The devices are small and can be easily hidden in a pocket or bag. The most popular disposable vapes resemble large USB sticks or highlighter pens.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO PARENTS & CARERS

The vapes pictured above contain 5% nicotine, which is the equivalent of a strong pack of cigarettes. Nicotine is addictive and can harm brain development and impact learning, memory, and attention.

The Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008 was amended in 2015 to define e-cigarettes and e-cigarette accessories to be separate from tobacco products. The Act makes many of the provisions that apply to tobacco products also apply to e-cigarettes and e-cigarette accessories. The Act makes it an offence:

• to sell e-cigarettes and e-cigarette accessories to persons aged under 18

• for adults to buy e-cigarettes and e-cigarette accessories on behalf of persons aged under 18

The NSW Department of Education has advised schools that students should not bring e-cigarettes or e-cigarette accessories onto school premises or use them during school-based activities. Consistent with Department of Education and school policy - vaping, selling or being in the possession of e-cigarettes will result in our students being reported to their parents and to their home school for disciplinary action.

Studies have also shown that kids who use e-cigarettes are more likely than their peers to go on to smoke cigarettes.

If you, or a parent you know, is concerned about the risks of electronic cigarette use in teenagers, the following information provides you with the facts.

WHAT ARE E-CIGARETTES?Also known as cuvies, stigs and vapes an e-cigarette is in simple terms a device that heats a flavoured liquid (popular flavours include; strawberry, watermelon, peach and creme brulee) to an aerosol which can be inhaled. The device can be disposable (often allowing for up to 600 inhalations) or it can be reusable by refilling the device with e-liquid or a pod (containing e-liquid). Recent data shows an increase in use of e-cigarettes over the past three years, with one in five students aged 16–17, trying e-cigarettes.

HOW DO THEY WORK?E-cigarettes produce an aerosol by using a battery to heat a liquid. This liquid is sometimes called “e-juice,” “e-liquid,” “vape juice,” or “vape liquid.” The liquid used in e-cigarettes is made up of flavours, chemicals and often contains nicotine.Users inhale e-cigarette aerosol into their lungs. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales it into the air.

WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?E-cigarettes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be as small as a USB and even look like one, they can also look like pens, highlighters or cigarettes.

WHY ARE THEY UNSAFE/RISKY/DANGEROUS?E-cigarette liquid is made up of different chemicals. These chemicals can include:

• Nicotine (although illegal without a prescription in Australia, many disposable devices that youth are using contain nicotine.)• Flavorings such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to a serious lung disease• Volatile organic compounds• Cancer-causing chemicals• Heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead

Effects of nicotine on youth:• Nicotine can harm the developing teenage brain.1 The brain keeps developing until about age 25.• Using nicotine as a teenager can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control.1 • Each time a new memory is created or a new skill is learned, stronger connections – or synapses – are built between brain cells. Young

people’s brains build synapses faster than adult brains. Nicotine changes the way these synapses are formed.• Using nicotine as a teenager may also increase risk for future addiction to other drugs.1

WHAT CAN I DO AS A PARENT?The KEY is talking about e-cigarettes with your child, preparing yourself with the facts and role modelling with a smoke and e-cigarette free environment. KEY considerations for talking about e-cigarettes:K: Know the facts or where to find them from a reputable sourceE: Engage on the topic in a relaxed and easy way. Use the cues around you, a note home from the school, a person using a device, a story

on the news as the way into the conversation and the way to keep talking about it ongoing.Y: You know your child, communicate with them in ways that work for you and allow you to provide them with the right information to

make healthy decisions.Important note – if you are concerned that your child may be experiencing nicotine withdrawal please speak to your pediatrician or doctor.

E-Cigarettes What you need to know as parents.

The health effects of tobacco smoking and e-cigarette use

Smoking is the main cause of preventable death and disease in Australia!Smoking is linked to 40+ diseases, including lung cancer, liver cancer, emphysema and eye andmouth diseases. When you smoke, extremely harmful chemicals enter your body and can reach your heart, brainand go everywhere your blood flows.Smoking affects how you look and feel.

E-cigarettes contain chemicals that haven’t been tested for safety when inhaled into thelungs. E-cigarette makers don’t list all their ingredients and it can be hard to find out what they are. Some e-cigarettes contain nicotine even when they are labelled “nicotine free”.Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm your brain development.Studies have shown that young people who use e-cigarettes are more likely to smoke andbecome addicted to cigarettes in adulthood.

Effect of tobacco smoking on your health:

Effects of e-cigarette use on your health:

Stop your lungs growing properly and makeyou less fit.Give you tooth decay and sore or bleedinggums.Make you wheeze or trigger an asthma attack.Cause addiction to the drug nicotine.

Smoking can:Make you wheeze or trigger an asthmaattack.Make you moody, anxious and irritable.Expose your lungs, body and brain toharmful chemicals.Cause addiction to the drug nicotine.

Using e-cigarettes can:

is bad for the health of your body, lungs and braincosts a lot of money and can mean you miss out on doing fun activitiesexposes you to addictive and unknown substances gives you yellow teeth and unhealthy gums.

Smoking and e-cigarettes affect your brain:Your brain is particularly sensitive to the effects of nicotine. Your brain is still developing until you areabout 25 years old, so if you use nicotine your brain may not be able to properly develop. This meansthat you are more likely to develop anxiety and mood disorders.

What does all this mean for you? Smoking or using e-cigarettes:

By choosing not to smoke or use e-cigarettes you are setting yourself up for a healthier and happier life!
