ST PAUL’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, MT LAWLEY - FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT - 1 NEWSLETTER TERM 4 WEEK 5 November 12 2015 PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Dear Members of the St Paul’s Community Family Fun Day The Family Fun Day on Sunday certainly lived up to its name and we were blessed with the perfect weather for the day! At the risk of oming anyone, I would like to thank the wonderful people who helped to make the Family Fun Day such a tremendous success. Of course the first names that spring to mind are Clare Salfinger and Rebekah Hampson, who worked relessly for months to get everyone on board and coordinated the event from start to finish. The Class Representaves were crucial in rallying the troupes, and a big thank you goes to Geraldine Borck & Deanne Brescacin (PK), Vanessa Mannion (Kindy), Malaika Jordan (Pre Primary), Mary Abbo & Carla Morris-Luck (Yr 1), Geraldine Borck & Cheryl Theobald (Yr 2), Stephanie Lang & Lisa Fuller (Yr 3), Shannon Grant-Smith & Celine Hugo (Yr 4), Stephanie Trestrail & Louisa Mackin (Yr 5) and Juliet Bruining (Yr 6). Among the many helpers, special menon must be made of Suzanne Woods, Penny & Simon Gazia, Kellie and Gerry McElligo, Carla Morris-Luck & her mother Gerri Luck (who donated the beauful floral arrangements), May Ling Ryan, Sarah Langley, Anna Dang, Lisa Baalis, Luisa Mackin’s brother, Stephanie Trestrail and Joe Carroll who played an instrument to entertain in the hall. Thank you also to a group of local secondary students who gave up their me to help on the various stalls. Their help was very much appreciated. We are especially grateful to Jesse Yock and Julia Waller, who took the plunge into the dunking machine; and Catherine Nguyen, who braided hair ALL day and added beauful ribbons which she donated for the cause. Our thanks also go to the teachers who had their classes make beauful posters to promote the Fun Day acvies. Thank you to everyone who helped throughout the day, from seng up and working on the stalls to the enormous task of cleaning up at the end of the day. Your support was greatly appreciated. Kindy 2016 Last night, we held a Parent Informaon Session for Kindy 2016. The parents had a chance to hear about how they can prepare their children for Kindy next year. Next Wednesday, 18 November, the 2016 Kindy students will have an Orientaon session from 9.30-10.30am. Checkmate Interschool Chess Competition Students from our Chess Club will participate in the Checkmate Interschool Chess Competition between St Paul’s Primary School, Our Lady of Grace School and St Thomas’ Primary School, on Wednesday 18 November at St Thomas’ Primary School, Claremont. We wish these students all the best of luck. P&F AGM and Annual School Community Meeting Everyone is invited to attend the P&F AGM followed by the Annual School Community Meeting on Tuesday 24 November commencing at 6.30pm in the Barbier Hall. Please consider nominating yourself, or another willing person, for a position on the P&F Executive or the School Board. Nominations for both close on Friday 20 November and can be lodged at the school office. We need members with an interest in the welfare of St Paul’s School and a desire to promote Catholic schooling to offer their valuable services to the school community. Dear Members of the St Paul’s Community
Family Fun Day The Family Fun Day on Sunday certainly lived up to its name and we were blessed with the perfect weather for the day! Remembrance Day This Wednesday, 11 November, we had a reflective prayer service to honour Remembrance Day, lead by the Year 5 students. The children were encouraged to buy and wear a red poppy from the RSL for a gold coin donation, with the proceeds going towards raising funds for their welfare work. Reconciliation Next Tuesday 17 November, the Year 3 students will participate in a Retreat Day in preparation for their First Reconciliation. Please remember them in your prayers as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Thursday 26 November.
St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Appeal 2015
St Vincent de Paul has provided us with a list of families as a guide to help students compile
their hampers. This provides students with a particular focus on the number of families in our
community that struggle throughout the year but especially during Christmas.
St Vincent de Paul has also requested food voucher donations to assist families. Financial
donations and gift cards are the most versatile gift that can be given to the Society, as these
donations can be used in response to areas of need. If you decide to make a financial or gift
card donation, please send these directly to the front office. Please send in donations no later
than Friday 20 November. It is important to remember that hampers must contain non-
perishable food items that are in date and in good condition. Please do not include any
chocolate items, as St Vincent de Paul does not have refrigeration facilities.
Thankyou for your continued support. Know that in giving, we help create greater compassion,
respect and dignity for those who need a helping hand this Christmas.
The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary 21 November
The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated every year on November 21,
commemorates (in the words of the Liturgy of the Hours, the daily prayer of the Roman Rite of
the Catholic Church) "that dedication of herself which Mary made to God from her very
childhood under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who filled her with grace at her Immaculate
Conception." Also known as the Dedication of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the feast originated in
the East.

EXTENSION
During Term 4 a group of Year 6 students have been learning to program the Edison Robots.
The Edison is a small orange brick that is Lego compatible and has many features found on the more expensive Lego Robots.
We have had some success in getting them to go forwards, follow a black line, respond to a clap with a beeping sound or by flashing lights and move away from objects when they sense they are near.

Remembrance Day Prayer Liturgy
On Wednesday 11 November the students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 came together to honour our war heroes, past and present. The Year 5 students led us in a beautiful and reverent liturgy. All students wore poppies to commemorate the occasion.

SWIMMING LESSONS 2015
As part of the Physical Education programme, all children in Years One to Six will be attending compulsory swimming lessons at Bayswater Waves beginning on Monday 23rd November and concluding Friday 27th November 2015.
This Year all classes from Year One to Year Six will have five 45min lessons. Students will be bused to and from the Bayswater Waves under the supervision of their class teachers. Lessons will be conducted by qualified instructors, using the Royal Lifesaving Vacswim stages.
Each child is required to have bathers (worn under uniform to school each day), a towel and a pair of slip-on footwear (to be worn to and from the pool only) for each lesson. Goggles are optional, but highly recommended. All items are to be carried to and from the pool in a clearly labelled swimming or plastic bag.
PLEASE clearly label every item of clothing including bathers, towel, goggles, shoes, socks and underwear. We cannot be responsible for lost items of clothing. Please complete the enrolment form for each child (sent home this week) and return it to your child’s class teacher by Friday 13th November. Any difficulties regarding attendance of lessons should be sent in writing, with an attached medical certificate, to the Principal.
The students are not allowed to wear thongs / flip flops to school. Children will change into their slip-on footwear before they leave for the pool and put their uniform footwear on when they return to school.

SCHOOL BANKING REWARDS
The Commonwealth Bank at the end of last term recalled some rewards due to the small batteries that were inside and
could be harmful to small children if swallowed. These were the Cosmic Light Beam Torch and the Lunar Light Band. This has put pressure on the stocks of the other rewards and consequently the Glow-in-the-Dark Solar System is also no longer available. The bank have added on to the reward list some items from 2013 and 2014 to replace the ones that are no longer available.
Current Rewards Available are: Galaxy Glider - new item Intergalactic Rocket Invisible Ink Pens Knuckles Game - 2013 reward item Outer Space Savers Money Box Scented Pencils - 2014 reward item Shark keyring - 2014 reward item Swim Bag - 2014 reward item
I will try to get pictures of the new and old rewards to help the children make their decision. I know some children were disappointed in not being able to redeem the reward they were saving for, however the bank have never had reward items recalled before so we really appreciate your patience and understanding.
