New mural at Eastview created by students

T here is a new mural at Eastview Middle School, thanks to the talents of 8th grader Katey Mundorf who takes classes at Color

My World Art Studio. She designed the mural showing PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) characteristics. The mural was painted by a group of students to beautify their school. “The mural depicts Eastview’s mascot,” Katie said, “and has star student traits posted on the sign. This art will definitely brighten the halls.”

I t has been five years since the Village of Bartlett and Miaoli City, Taiwan became sister cities. The Village of Bartlett, Arts in Bartlett and the Taipei Economic

and Cultural Office (TECO) in Chicago will celebrate this special anniver-sary with a program at Bartlett Village Hall, 228 S. Main Street, on Mon-day, July 13 beginning at 10 a.m. The program will open with greetings from Arts in Bartlett President Rita Lopienski, and Eric Chiou, President of the Midwest Hakka Association, and remarks by Bartlett Village President Kevin Wallace and TECO Am-bassador Calvin Ho. Musical performances will follow by Neo-Classic Chamber Ensemble, the Bartlett International Chorus and the Chicago Hakka Chorus.

Neo -Classic Chamber Ensemble was founded in 2003 by pianist Hsin-I Chen and consists of both U.S. and European-trained musicians who have toured throughout Hong Kong, Japan, Canada and the United States. The group will perform a handful of Hakka songs, titled together as “Impression of Formosa.” The Bartlett International Chorus and the Chicago Hakka Chorus will perform together during the anniversary program, singing “Rain from the Sky” and “Hakka True Emotion.” In 2010 these two groups traveled to Taiwan for a concert tour and to formalize the Sis-ter City agreement.

Everyone is invited to come enjoy the musical program with a reception following, and help celebrate the Village of Bartlett’s 5-year friendship with Miaoli City.

Letter from the President

Happy July! We just finished the 13th Annual Festival of the Arts! It was a very good event, and I think we had the best weather we’ve ever had! The end of June was un-seasonably cool, but lent itself well to a two-day outdoor festival. You will see many photos of the festival in this newsletter. We want to thank the sponsors, all the artists for sharing their art, the musicians and dancers for performing, and especially the vol-unteers who put in so much time to make it a successful event. Kyle Johnson and Nick Gaines did an amazing job with the sound and they also performed keyboards, guitar and vocals throughout the festival to fill in any gaps. There will be a volunteer appre-ciation pizza party at the beginning of our next board meeting on July 27 at 6:30pm at the Arts Center. Another wonderful event we recently had was our second “$5 Friday,” featuring abstract artists and jazz pi-anist and vocalist Louise Kelly. We will continue $5 Friday on July 24, featuring Kyle Johnson, Nick Gaines and other young adult performers that they muster up. What a great way to enjoy music and art! We want to celebrate the talents of our young people! We continue to partner with the Bartlett Public Library, with a “Read to the Rhythm Around the Word” pro-gram on July 10 for grades 2-6, on the July 10 from 10-11am at our Arts Center. Our joint field trip to the Art Institute on July 18 is full, but if you want to get on a waiting list, contact us at 630 372 4152 or [email protected]

Special event: Six professional musicians from Taiwan will visit Chicago and presenting a concert at Bartlett Village Hall on July 13th at 10:00am, in honor of the 5th anniversary of the Sister City International exchange between Bartlett and Miaoli, Taiwan. The theme of this musical tour is "The Impression of Formosa.” They will perform Hakka Chamber music in addition to other folk music. This event is free and open to the public.

We’ll repeat our popular theater outing from last year by going to a Fox Valley Repertory Theatre play at Pheasant Run Resort, “Maybe Baby It’s You” on Friday, September 25 at 8 pm. You can purchase vouchers to exchange for tickets at the theater at the Arts Center now and they’ll be available soon on our website under Adult Art. This is a fun way to raise money for your local arts council.

It is our membership that sustains Arts in Bartlett, a volunteer-run arts council, so please continue to support us with your membership and invite new individuals, organizations and businesses to join. It is this grassroots advocacy that grows the arts! Our membership dues have never been raised in our 12 year history, so dues for 2016 will be raised by $5 beginning July 1, but with our Summer Membership Special new members can enjoy paid dues for the rest of 2015 and all of 2016 at one low price. Join at Arts in Bartlett or on the Join Us page of our website www.artsinbartlett.org if you want to pay by credit card.

We hope that you can support our mission to bring more arts to Bartlett by being a volunteer or joining a committee, attending our events, volunteering at our Center for the Arts, and spread the news about Arts in Bartlett, a vibrant arts council!

Thanks!

Rita Lopienski

"Maybe Baby, It's You." Or maybe...it isn't? From the very first kiss to the not-so-golden years of marriage, "Maybe Baby" is a wild ride through the search for that most elusive relationship -- the soul mate. What starts as a laundry list of must-have soul mate qualities swiftly dwindles down to a desperate plea of finding someone who is simply "warm and breathing" in this comi-cal quest for compatibility. From "Mr. Right" who hilariously becomes "Mr. Wrong" the minute he steps onto the dance floor, to an elderly couple who considers remarriage at their grand-son's soccer game, this series of eleven vignettes is sure to warm the hearts of lovers every-where!
