FROM THE PRINCIPAL CLASS TEAM At assembly on Monday the Robotics team from RMPS and Chalcot Lodge PS proudly presented their robots which they designed and developed themselves for the recent RoboCup Dance Competition. Using the ‘Toy Story’ theme the robots came to life moving and dancing to music. Later in the day our students also presented at the Chalcot Lodge Primary School assembly. Well done to the whole team you worked so well together! We laughed, clapped and we were all entertained on Tuesday evening with the 3-6 concert- ‘We Are All Born Free’. This performance about Human Rights sent the message loud and clear of the importance about getting on with each other. Our students excelled themselves with their speaking, performing skills, singing and working cooperatively together to share a wonderful performance with the school community. The performance was created through the joint efforts of the children from years 3 to 6 and our Performing Arts teacher Sharon Foley. Once again Sharon’s wonderful vision and dramatic talent has shone through to the benefit of all the participants and audience. Sharon was ably supported by Adam Pollazzi from Junior Rockers and his singing teacher Jen Makovic. I would like to especially thank Sharon and the teachers from the 3/4 and 5/6 teams for their continued commitment to our Performing Arts Program and for the support they have provided to ensure the success of the performance. A number of staff and parents must be also thanked for their assistance with the making of the costumes/props and for the sale of tickets etc. Most importantly, CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL STUDENTS! You all did shine! The song, ‘Seasons of Love’ was a perfect conclusion to a superb night. This Friday the 3-6 students will be participating in ’Jump Rope For Heartto raise money for the National Heart Foundation. During PE sessions this term the students have been practising and have been keeping fit by trying new skipping moves and skills. The Jump Off on Friday will go from 9-11.00am. I know that everyone is looking forward to the Walkathon and Footy Day next Wednesday. This is one of our annual, major fundraising activities as well as raising funds for the school it promotes health and fitness in the outdoors. The 3/4 children will start off at 9.00am, followed by the P-2 children at 11.10 and the 5/6 students will walk the course from 2.10pm. Get your footy jumpers scarfs and beanies and come along and walk with your child. Friends and other family members are also welcome! 3/4S have started their new maths investigation into shape, and the children have been excited to utilize all the new technology in our classroom to explore different concepts. We have been using iPads to take photos of shapes around the school and present them on our fabulous new TV. The class has enjoyed identifying the features of shapes as they are interpreted at the end of the lesson, and we have had some stimulating discussions about the correct technical names for 3D shapes! The students in 34S are looking forward to learning about other aspects of shape such as tessellations and symmetry.

On Tuesday, 4th September we celebrated the installation of our art work with the Box Hill South Neighbourhood House. Sam N, Sarah L, Oshalee P, Bec R and Josh D all walked down to the house with me during the lunchtime and saw our 8 beautifully painted rainbow lorikeets and possums that has been installed into the playgrounds of the house. This is an area that the children who use the house play in. I have heard from the teachers of the Possums kindergarten group that the children love our art work and consider it very appropriate for their play area. Many thanks to the houses employees Pam, Val, Janina, Monica and Sam who were all there to help us celebrate. This is the start of an ongoing relationship we have with the house to share our artwork and to enhance the local community. Please go down and have a look. Cora Brownjohn

District Sports Round Robin Last Friday, in wet and windy conditions, our 5/6 students competed against some schools from our District in (ironically) the Summer Sports Round Robin. Some fantastic results saw several of our teams go through and will be playing in District grand finals after the holidays. Boys basketball in pool A and B, Volleystars and Rounders have gone through to grand finals and we wish them the best of luck. Well done to our Grade 5/6 teachers as well as Geoff Simmons and Heidi McArdle for all their hard work in preparing our Children for the day.

District Athletics

Next Monday the 17th of September some of our grade 3 to 6 students will be competing in the District Athletics. As

you may remember, half of this day was held way back in term one but rain prevented us from finishing all the activities. The track events will be completed on Monday at a different venue. Box Hill Athletics track on Elgar Rd in Box Hill is where we will be. Apologies to parents for having to pay again but as we used both the buses and the track in term one we obviously had to pay for them. The order of events next Monday is : 10:00am 1500m 10:30am Hurdles 10:45am 75m and 100m sprints 11:00am Shuttle sprints (Chn in shuttle relays will also get an individual sprint race) 11:30am Shuttle Relays 1:00pm 200m 12:30pm 4 x 100m Relays 1:15pm 800m 1:45pm Championship sprint 2:00pm Presentations

TAKE A BOW EVERYBODY!!!!

What a thrill it was to be a part of such a creative effort and experience. I’m always in awe of how the children manage to come up with such extraordinary ideas as they write and shape a performance piece. The process the children experienced was evident as each class’s work was stamped with their unique character and personalities.

I believe that the opportunity for students to shape and write their own play will be a lifelong learning experience. The discipline of having to sustain motivation, a sense of purpose, contribute ideas, negotiate, be creative and translate concepts into theatre is a challenge many believe to be beyond their years. To see such confidence, watch children holding their own, projecting voices and communicating character was a delight.

A huge thankyou to all who contributed and supported us in such a demanding process. The rewards of last night will remain with us forever.

“Footy Day” Walkathon – Wednesday 19th September Hope your sponsorship forms are filling up! Don’t forget to bring in your sponsorship form on the 19

th September so

you can record your laps. You can then start to collect your sponsorship money after that or even add more sponsors if you want to and they are willing to support you! Money collected from your sponsors is due back on the 19

th

October. The more money we raise the more goes towards Mr F’s goal of $10,000! Can we do it? Don’t say no – just have a go!

There will be 1st, 2nd

and 3rd

Prizes as an incentive for the students that raise the most sponsorship money.

The prizes are vouchers and passes valued at:

1st

Prizes $250 2

nd Prize $150

3rd

Prize $100

If you have one child or more children attending the school, and participating in the walkathon – the child/children in that family have the opportunity to WIN one of the 3 prizes, and kids you will not be disappointed - we are organising some fantastic vouchers and passes for you to win.

PLUS the class that raises the most money will get to spend one of their lunch hours in the GYM! That’s exclusive entry just for your class!

But remember that each student still has to fill out their own sponsorship form - the idea is that all children attending the school have the opportunity to win a 1

st, 2

nd or 3

rd prize for raising the most sponsorship money, whether they are

an individual child attending the school or with siblings attending the school as combined end total. We believe this will make it fair for all families and provide ALL the opportunity to win a prize.

Can you help? Tammy needs 2 parent helpers from each junior class and one parent helper from each of the middle and senior classes. There are some vacancies in the junior classes so please if you can help please place your name on the roster located on the Junior deck area or contact Tammy [email protected]. If your class’s roster is full, you can still come along and join us all for the walk - it’s heaps of fun!

World Teachers Day – 26th October The PFA is starting to organise the teachers’ special morning tea, thank you to Zoe F from JCD for offering to coordinate it this year. Every year the PFA organises a morning tea for our wonderful teachers at Roberts McCubbin as a way to say thank you and to let them know how much we appreciate all that they do here at our school. We have had enormous amount of offers on our PFA Volunteers list to help bring a plate of morning tea for this event from many willing parents – we will place a roster for helpers on the deck in the beginning of October next term.
