Spring Wing Fling
Last Friday, our school hosted this special event to
acknowledge the completion of our three endangered species
sculptures. It was a great opportunity to learn about the
history of the sculptures and the significance of the animals
depicted in them. We had the pleasure of being welcomed
by Aunty Carol and sharing a special dragonfly dance with Jo
Clancy. We were also able to thank the key contributor to
this first phase of the sculpture trail, Niki Martignago.
Every day I am truly astounded by the significant
contribution of parents like Niki, and the members of the sculpture trail committee. Our school
is blessed to have such a supportive community and it is wonderful to work with you for the
benefit of the children.
Principal’s Art Competition
The winners of this year’s competition were announced at our
Principal’s assembly last week. It was a difficult job selecting the
winners from such creative and inspired artworks. Congratulations to
the following students for being awarded as winners for their grade:
Jasmine H (Kindergarten)
Eadie M (Year 1)
Zoe B (Year 2)
Ruben S (Year 4)
Ben D (Year 5)
Lily S (Year 6)
The winning art works will be
framed and placed on display in
the office for all to enjoy.
Kindergarten Transition
The third session of our transition program was held this week and the children appear to be
settling in well and enjoying their time at ‘big’ school. Mr Bartie and Mrs Jinks have been
offering opportunities in various activities that the
children will be expected to do when they start school
next year, such as walking in lines, using the toilets,
cutting and pasting, and using computers. At this stage,
our enrolment numbers indicate we will have two
Kindergarten classes. It’s not too late to enrol so if
your child is turning 5 before 31 July 2018, they are
eligible to start school. Please collect an enrolment
form from the school office and complete it as soon as
possible so we can meet your child before the end of the year and include them in our
organisation of classes. If you know of other children in the area, please feel free to spread the
word.
Staffing Update
The school is currently planning our class and program structures for 2018. Currently, our
projected student enrolments are 250, which is a drop from our current enrolments (259).
Unfortunately this means we will move from 11 classes to 10 classes, however all permanent
teaching staff will retain their positions at the school. Liz Tink was appointed permanently as
our Assistant Principal but has been on extended leave and has now retired. We are waiting to
hear from Staffing about who will fill this position. Crystal Cooke will be extending her
maternity leave and returning part time to the school at the beginning of Term 3. Paula
Forrester is returning from leave to start Term 1. At this stage there is no indication whether
Matt Carter is returning or not. I will keep you informed through future newsletters of any
further changes as we get more details.

Nude Food Day Challenge – Thursday 9th November
Thank you Leura Public School for your fantastic support for Nude Food Day!
5J have collected and analysed our Nude Food Day Rubbish. It was clear we had less
plastic in our lunchboxes, the amount of plastic rubbish thrown out was reduced and our
playground looked spotless. This means no rubbish would be entering the storm water
and draining into our Hanging Swamp. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations to 1C who collected data from their own Nude Food Day lunchboxes.
What a great result – 15 reusable containers.

Aboriginal Art Workshops with Leanne Tobin: 15th – 17th November, 2017.
This week Leura Public School welcomed a talented visitor to our school when Leanne Tobin, a
local Darug elder and artist, spent three days teaching art workshops in our artroom.
All of our students and teachers listened as Leanne shared stories of the rich Aboriginal history
and culture of the land on which our beautiful school is situated. Students made connections
between environmental awareness and caring for ‘Our Place’ and country, as we are the
custodians of the Hanging Swamp and bushland at our school. Students had the opportunity to
experience new approaches to artwork, and enjoyed creating messy sponged landscape
backgrounds, using a limited colour palette to create bushland, swamp and sandstone
environments. Detailed drawings of our endangered hanging swamp species were collaged into
the landscape with Leanne encouraging students to explore their creativity and connect to their
local environment.
Thank you for visiting Leura Public School, and for sharing your cultural and artistic knowledge
with us.

In the meantime, if anyone else would like to help out, please contact the Canteen Committee at [email protected]

The Canteen is in urgent need of volunteers to help with the “behind-the-scenes” tasks.
We really need help with:
Roster Coordination & Management Shopping on Thursdays Counting and collating orders on
Thursdays Sushi pickup on Fridays
All the above tasks take no more than an hour of your time per week. There’s no need to volunteer on a regular basis, even once a term will help us out immensely!
If you can help out, please send an email to [email protected] for more information on any of the above tasks.
