Who knew watching snails could be so much fun! This activity had our Kindy children view the movements of snails, that have been sitting in water, with a drop of food colouring included. But don’t worry, its safe for our little friends, as they ‘run out of colour’ after a little while.

Hello to our parents, caregivers and families,

We are, ever so slowly, returning to some sort of ‘normal’...

Over the past few weeks, as attendance rates have increased, it has been evident that students, staff and parents/carers alike are pleased to have things feeling like normal and running well at school. This sense of calm and order has only been achieved however due to the outstanding work of the LPS staff, who have navigated the recent weeks and months with the positive approach on which our school values are based. Once again, I take this opportunity to publically thank them for their efforts to support our students and wider community.

Despite the clear challenges presented in recent times, there have been numerous silver linings that have allowed us to learn and improve from the experience. Miss Scott and I have thoroughly enjoyed our mornings welcoming our students onto the school site upon opening the gates. It has been wonderful to say good morning to each and every Year 1 - 6 student who attends school, as well as the chat, laugh and enjoy the ‘socially distanced’ company of our parents and carers. The good will and support of families continues to be witnessed daily, and whilst we look forward to the day when parents/carers are again able to return, it is pleasing we have been able to stay well connected despite our requirement to have parents/carers remain off school site.

As some students have not returned to school with as consistent attendance as we would like, we have increased our contact with families and visits to homes to offer support. Miss Scott, Mrs Lawson and myself have enjoyed many hours over the past 5 weeks visiting homes to re-connect with families, ensuring they are aware of how we can support them and their children to regularly attend school. We have been working with North Metro Regional Education Office to add another layer to our attendance improvement efforts, with Mr Mervyn Kelly working with us over the next few weeks, as we continue to highlight the necessity of good attendance habits to our families. We are also putting the finishing touches to an updated ‘Student Attendance and Engagement Policy’ that will provide a clearer picture for families on the responsibility of schools, parents/carers and other stake holders, in ensuring students maintain positive attendance, and the steps in place to support this. Please be assured that when we call, email or visit regarding your child’s attendance, this is done so to provide support at the local level. Working together to ensure students attend school is best done with the school, as we have our students best interests at the centre of our efforts.

With this newsletter, parents/cares will also receive a letter regarding Reporting in Semester 1. Due to the disruption on teaching and learning by COVID-19, reporting will look different to that of times past. Whilst we will still provide information about English and Mathematics via comments, as well as the Attitudes, Behaviours and Effort offered by students for each learning area, there will be no grades assigned in Semester 1. Evidence is vital in communicating student progress and achievement and with the continuity of student learning being impacted over the past several weeks, all grades will be held over to Semester 2. Despite this change, I am pleased to share that for the first time, all our specialist staff (AUSLAN, Drama and Physical & Health Education) will offer a comment to highlight the learning provided in their classrooms over Semester 1. This will provide our families with a richer understanding of the content and importance of specialist subjects, as we seek to ensure students are exposed to creative, physical and linguistic learning opportunities.

Despite hoping to publish a Term Calendar full of exciting school and community events, the world has not yet returned to pre-COVID times, meaning all assemblies, P&C events and interschool sports are still off limits. Fingers crossed that we continue to see positive results in WA so that we can soon re-start all of our regular activities.

Regards

Mike Mount-Bryson

Miss Scott’s Snippet… It is wonderful to see so many students return to school, and with that, some amazing work to celebrate! Kwela block has had a very mischievous Pixie, Pippety Skycap, play lots of pranks on our Year 1 and 2 classes. Students have immersed in this Talk for Writing unit of work by the engaging hooks created by their teachers. Students will now begin to create their own imaginative stories. As part of learning about the life cycles of plants, B2 and K3 have begun a school garden, by planting a range of vegetables and flowers for us all to enjoy. Moodja classes have spent time collaborating to create a Class Purpose by developing a shared language on expected and unexpected behaviours.
