We have been privileged to work with so many wonderful students, families and staff members. Together, we celebrated many special events together and accomplished a lot for our school community. The wonderful partnership that exists between home, school and parish in our community is something to be celebrated. Father John from Annunciation Parish visited classes every week and for special occasions and we had many wonderful celebrations and trips to Annunciation Parish to mark important occasions in our school and liturgical year. We also celebrated our jubilee anniversary… 50 wonderful years of Catholic education at Annunciation! Our students lived the IB learner profiles by showing they were principled and caring persons. They outdid themselves in raising funds for important charities and organizations such as the Edmonton Catholic Schools Foundation, the Terry Fox Foundation, the Holy Childhood Association, and Jump Rope for Heart. They were also always willing to lend a helping hand to one another. It is such a privilege to work with such kind and caring children and young people each day! Administrators’ Message Our year has been filled with smiles and happy memories.

Our students showed they were inquirers and thinkers when they worked hard at their studies and took pride in their achievements. We celebrated our students’ learning at Student-led Conferences. Our grade six students impressed the larger community with their expertise, knowledge, communication skills and action projects stemming from their work in the PYP Exhibition.

As the school year draws to a close, we would like to send well wishes with those of you who will be leaving us this year. To our grade six students, many of whom have been with us since kindergarten, we thank you for sharing your beautiful gifts and talents with us over the years. You

have truly been outstanding leaders and fine examples for our younger students to aspire to. We wish you the best of luck as you move on to junior high school.

We hope that each of our students and families enjoys a restful and relaxing summer holiday and we look forward to greeting our returning students in September.

Thank you to Mr. Joe Estephan for coordinating our School Start School Supply Program. If you have any questions, please contact School Start.

New District Communication Tool For several years parents & guardians have appreciated receiving attendance communiqués as well as school-wide messages such as important announcements and newsletters. The program that the Edmonton Catholic School District has been using is called Synrevoice. The District has recently begun working with a new company called SwiftK12 which will be replacing Synrevoice in the next few weeks.

We are expecting an easy transfer to Swift; however, like anything new, there may be some unexpected issues that need to be resolved. The school will be migrating to the new program during the month of June. We’re pleased to say that parents are not required to make any changes to PowerSchool as the changeover will be automated.

We encourage all of our parents and guardians to continue with on-going communiqués from the school to ensure absenteeism checks, important announcements and essential messaging via email, voice broadcasting and SMS texts.

2017-2018 School Year Staffing News Although the district staffing cycle is not yet finished, we would like to advise you of the staffing changes that are known to us as of today.

• Mrs. Christine Szaszkiewicz, Grade 2 teacher, who Mrs. Stephanie Bajac was hired to replace, is currently on a maternity leave. We will welcome her back in the upcoming school year.

• Mrs. Christie Trautman has been on a deferred leave this year, so we also welcome her back in September. She will return to her Kindergarten position who Mrs. Karen Szelewicki was covering this year.

• Mrs. Andrea Olivieri has accepted a position at Bishop David Motiuk. It is a part-time position that will allow her to have more time at home with her son, Luca. We will be seeking a teacher to replace her in Grade 1.

• Mr. Phillip Campbell has also accepted a position at Bishop David Motiuk, so we will also be seeking a Grade 5 teacher.

Since our staffing cycle will not be complete until closer to the end of the month, we will publish the names of new and returning staff members on our website as soon as the staffing cycle is completed.

School Council Our last School Council meeting of this school year was held on Wednesday, May 24th. We invite you to attend our first meeting of the school year which will be held on Wednesday, September 20th at 6:30 pm. School Council meeting minutes can be found on our school website.

Annunciation’s 50th Jubilee Anniversary Celebrating our Past… Envisioning our Future ~ 1966-2016

On April 26th, Annunciation Catholic Elementary IB School celebrated quite a milestone… 50 very successful years of Catholic education! The day began with a special school-wide mass that was celebrated at Annunciation Parish by Archbishop Richard W. Smith, Bishop David Motiuk, Father Dean Dowle, Father Julian Bilyj Father John Louis Mariapragasam and other members of the Catholic archdiocese. Immediately following the mass, there was a beautiful formal program that included congratulatory greetings and speeches from MLA John Carson, ACSTA President Adriana LaGrange, Trustee Debbie Engel, Superintendent Joan Carr and the second principal of Annunciation, Kevin Carr. Also in attendance were Trustee Laura Thibert and Trustee Larry Kowalczyk. The morning culminated in a delicious luncheon at the school followed by Annunciation’s Student Faith Development Day where students participated in special sessions that were organized by guest presenters. It was a beautiful day of celebration! A huge thank you goes out to everyone who celebrated with us, making the day all the more special!

Annunciation was opened by Edmonton Catholic Schools because there were families in the area who wanted the best Catholic education for their children. While much has changed in the last 50 years, this goal has not. Annunciation continues to be a place where students and staff strive to be the best version of themselves and where students, guided by the Gospel, Catholic tradition and International Baccalaureate philosophy, are empowered to become internationally-minded, life-long learners and contributing world citizens who are stewards of the Earth.

Thank you for spreading the good news about Annunciation. We have a terrific community of students, parents and staff. We continuously receive positive feedback about the behavior of our students and the way they conduct themselves in the community. Thank you for your support. You and your children are our best form of advertising!

Moo Club Closure Please be advised that the Moo Club will come to an end in June. Milk will not be available during the last two weeks of the month. Moo Club cards that are still active will be distributed back to students at the beginning of September. A great big thank you goes out to our Grade 5 Moo Club volunteers, Ashton, Isabel, Zia, Ayela, Cherrylou and Kenna for their work in coordinating the Moo Club!

Grade Six Farewell Our Grade Six Farewell will be held on Wednesday, June 28th. We will begin at 9:00 am at Annunciation Parish with our Eucharistic Celebration that will involve all classes. Following the Mass, we will have a special ceremony for our grade six students at the parish. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

That same week, on Tuesday, June 27th, our students will spend the day at Laurier Park where they will be treated to a BBQ lunch sponsored by our school council. Thank you school council!!!

Annunciation School Learn-a-Thon The students at Annunciation are excited to be participating in our school-wide Learn-a-Thon to be held on June 9, 2017. This Learn-a-thon will enable our students to raise money for our school based on their successful completion of Learn-a-thon activities. The money raised will go towards enhancing the learning environment within the classrooms and school, as well as student resources.

The Learn-a-thon involves each student participating in various curriculum-related challenges organized by their teacher that they must complete successfully. All students are encouraged to collect donations from family and friends. Every penny counts and even the smallest donations are greatly appreciated. Let’s get everyone involved!

As in the past, there are many prizes to be won! Students can get their name entered in a draw by collecting donations. We are requesting that students bring in their donations by Monday, June 5th. If you are able to make a PRIZE DONATION please contact Mrs. De Stefanis-Dimas or Mr. Estephan at 780-484-4319. We respectfully request that we receive your prize donations prior to June 5th, 2017.

Grade 6 PATs Students in grades six will be writing Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) in June. Please ensure that your child is ready through proper preparation, study and sufficient rest. Students do better on tests when they are well-rested and have a nutritious breakfast before writing exams. The students will be assessed on the entire year’s learning. It is essential that they use the review material provided to them to assist in preparation. Below are June PAT dates:

Monday, June 19: English Language Arts Part B

Tuesday, June 20: Mathematics (students must have a ruler, protractor and calculator)

Thursday, June 22: Science

Friday, June 23: Social Studies

Thank You Patrollers! As the end of another school year quickly approaches, we would like to welcome the Grade 5 students who are training to take over the patrol duties from our Grade 6 students. We would also like to recognize the fine efforts of our Grade 6 students this year in making sure our school community crossed the street safely. These students volunteered their time and proved to be both responsible and committed to their duties even in the harshest climates. Our patrollers will be recognized at the annual AMA School Safety Patrol Picnic on June 2nd.

We would like to thank our Grade 6 patrollers for a job well done! Thank you, as well, to Mrs. Ostrowerka for her work in coordinating and supervising our patrollers all year. She was out there every single morning! Mrs. Ostrowerka, you are amazing!

Thank You Lunch Monitors! On behalf of Annunciation elementary students and staff, we would like to thank all the Grade 6 students who offered their time to monitor classrooms every day at lunch. Thank you for doing an EXCELLENT JOB! Thank you to Mr. Koper for coordinating the lunch monitors again this year.

Fun Day Yippee! June is here and you know what that means... FUN DAY! Please mark Monday, June 26th on your calendar (rainout date is Wednesday, June 28th). Please remember to dress your child for the weather as we will be outside for most of the day.

School Opening 2017 ~ Tuesday, September 5th The first day of school for students next year will be on Tuesday, September 5th. School District calendars for the 2017-2018 school year are posted on our District website: http://www.ecsd.net/schools/calendars

2017-2018 School Fees - August Office Hours Annunciation Supplemental Education Fees for 2017-2018 $50.00

Last year, the Board of Trustees suspended basic school fees for the 2016-17 school year. Basic fees include textbook rental, learning resources, print, technology, library or general fees. The pilot project helped lessen the pressures families were experiencing with the downturn in the economy. The District and school operating budgets were used to make up the $3.5 million shortfall.

The impact of the loss of revenue at the school level was challenging, and it was determined that it is not sustainable to suspend basic school fees long term. At the January 24, 2017 Public Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees voted to reinstate the collection of school fees using the guidelines set forth in the proposed Administrative Policy and Regulation 130 - Publicly Funded Basic Education and Additional Fees commencing September 1, 2017.

Recognizing the continued financial concerns of all families, a new school fee structure was developed that has more consistency and clarity, and which puts less of a financial burden on families than our previous model.

Supplemental Educational Fees have been set for each level and will be in effect as of September, 2017. These fees offset the cost of mandatory, non-curricular or co-curricular activities and resources that enhance the educational experience.

Schools may also charge complementary course fees, as well as individual user fees for specialized pieces of equipment or resources, field trips, and for activities or resources that are optional for the student. Academy fees will be charged on a strictly cost-recovery basis.

School fees can be paid easily from the comfort of your home through PowerSchool using your credit card! Just log-in (with the parent log-in) and click on the School Fees tab on the left hand side of the screen.

Annunciation will continue to collect additional funds on a strictly cost recovery basis for optional supplemental educational activities in the following categories: Extra-curricular teams/clubs, field trips, school activity costs (dances, social activities), student activity costs and costs for extra-ordinary course consumables.

August Office Hours – Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Our school office will be open on Wednesday, August 30th (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM) to allow parents/guardians to pay supplemental education fees and receive information about bus schedules and hours of operation. Please see the times below:

IB News IB Learner Profile – Reflective Our IB profile attribute this month is Reflective

Our Learner Profile this month is Reflective: When we look in the mirror, we see our reflection. Based on what we see, we may make adjustments by changing our clothes, adjusting a strand of hair, or we may decide that everything is fine and we feel good about how we look. When we reflect about what and how we learn, we do the same thing. Reflection helps us to be open-minded, empathetic,

Page 13: Newsletter June 2017 - ecsd.net · 1 | Page June, 2017 Newsletter . June 2017 . Administrators’ Message . Our year has been filled with smiles and happy memories. We have been privileged

13 | P a g e J u n e , 2 0 1 7

confident, and to develop self-respect. This month as we focus on being reflective Christians, let us think about how we can use our talents to better ourselves and those around us.

How can parents help develop this profile at home?

1. Spend some time reviewing your child’s report card with them. Discuss it with them and truly consider their thoughts on their strengths and areas for improvement.

Ask your child to clarify parts of the report card for you and explain why she rated her performance the way she did. Can she give an example of an area in which she’s particularly strong? How does she know that this is a strong point? Can she set specific goals for improvement in other areas?

2. Consider the goals that your child could set for the next term.

Make a list not only of the goals but also of specific actions that can be taken to achieve these goals. You might want to list action that your child will take independently as well as action parents will take to support them. For example, if one of the goals your child sets for herself is to improve her writing, her action might be to keep a journal and write in it for at least 10 minutes each night. As a parent, you might decide that the two of you will participate in shared writing for 30 minutes each week and produce a book of narratives together.

3. After any experience you’ve had with your children (a picnic, play, game, concert, movie, etc.), talk about the experience with them.

How could the play/movie have been better? How could you improve your piece of art/throwing in a game? What went well/wrong with the picnic? What new things did you learn at school today? What questions did you have at school today? Would you have done what the main character in the book did in that chapter? How could you improve your writing? What are you good at, and how do you know? What (and why) did you enjoy the most about the day?

IB Mission Statement

“The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, the IBO works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.”

As always, we welcome questions about the IB programme in our school. Sarah L’Hoir is the coordinator for our Primary Years Programme (PYP). She can be reached at 484-4319 or at Sarah.L’[email protected].

IB Learner Profile Attribute Certificates The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st Century. These values infuse all elements of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and serve to

inspire, motivate and focus the work of the students and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose.

There are 10 learner profile attributes, and our school focuses on one each month. For the month of May, our focus was on the learner profile attribute of being PRINCIPLED. Students are asked to reflect on their growth of each learner profile attribute monthly, once at the beginning on the month, and a second time at the end of the month. To recognize students for their efforts and growth, the teacher selects students to receive a certificate. Below is a list of our award recipients for the month of May:

June 2017

Now there are varieties of gifts … and there are varieties of services … and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation

of the Spirit for the common good. ~1 Corinthians 12:4-7~

This passage from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians provides the setting for a beautiful reflection as the school year is coming to an end. Our students have spent the past year discovering their gifts and talents, and growing strong and confident in their abilities. These scriptural words, and the ones that follow them in Paul’s letter, bring us back to the Truth that as unique as each of us is, we are all members of the Body of Christ. This is the beauty of Catholic education. We honor our diversity and know that it is designed to be used to build up that Body, our community, and make our world a better, stronger, more loving place. The Government of Alberta (GOA) has extended the timelines for school districts to complete their budgets. As a result, our school district will present its budget to the Board of Trustees at their June 20 Public Board Meeting. We are also awaiting regulations from GOA with respect to the reduction of school fees by 25% so that we can ensure that our fee schedules align with their guidelines. We anticipate that schools will be able to share fee schedules with their schools by the third week of June. Edmonton Catholic Schools offers many different learning opportunities for our high school students to extend their learning. Visit our Alternative Education website to learn more about diploma prep classes and summer school opportunities. https://www.ecsd.net/schools/8412/Pages/default.aspx June 21, National Aboriginal Day, will see our students and staff have many opportunities to engage in celebrations of indigenous culture and learning opportunities. It is an excellent occasion for us to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of our country and its people! We have had so many opportunities to celebrate Canada 150 over the course of the past several months. The celebration will not end on Canada Day. One of the resources that has become a favorite is the Canada 150 playlist. It offers all kinds of suggestions for you to get active, and would be great for families to explore over the summer. https://www.participaction.com/en-ca/programs/participaction-150-play-list June also brings for us a special celebration of fathers and the men who fill that role in the lives of our children. Please join me in blessing them with this adaptation of the Breastplate of St. Patrick.

Christ, be with him, Christ before him, Christ behind him, Christ in him, Christ beneath him, Christ above him, Christ on his right, Christ on his left, Christ where he lies, Christ where he sits, Christ where he arises, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of him, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of him, Christ in every eye that sees him, Christ in every ear that hears him. Amen

I leave you with a final thought from Pope Francis, tweeted on the Feast of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary: “May St. Joseph, Spouse of Mary and Patron of the Universal Church, bless you and watch over you. And best wishes to fathers!” (March 19, 2017) Have a wonderful rest of the school year, and may this summer bring you much joy and adventure as you delight in the blessings to be found in the change of pace that comes with the warm, sunny days! Many blessings, Joan Carr Superintendent

Chapter Nine: The Spirituality of Marriage and the Family

The ninth chapter is devoted to marital and family spirituality, which “is made up of thousands of small but real gestures”. The Pope clearly states that “those who have deep spiritual aspirations should not feel that the family detracts from their growth in the life of the Spirit, but rather see it as a path which the Lord is using to lead them to the heights of mystical union”. Everything, “moments of joy, relaxation, celebration, and even sexuality can be experienced as a sharing in the full life of the resurrection”. Here, the Pope speaks of prayer in the light of Easter, of the spirituality of exclusive and free love in the challenge and the yearning to grow old together, reflecting God’s fidelity. In the spirituality of care, consolation and incentive, the Pope teaches that “all family life is a ‘shepherding’ in mercy. Each of us, by our love and care, leaves a mark on the life of others”. It is a profound “spiritual experience to contemplate our loved ones with the eyes of God and to see Christ in them”.

Finally, in the last paragraph the Pope affirms: “No family drops down from heaven perfectly formed; families need constantly to grow and mature in the ability to love. All of us are called to keep striving towards something greater than ourselves and our families, and every family must feel this constant impulse. Let us make this journey as families, let us keep walking together. May we never lose heart because of our limitations, or ever stop seeking that fullness of love and communion which God holds out before us”.

Conclusion

The apostolic exhortation concludes with a Prayer to the Holy Family:

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love; to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing.

Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen.

As can readily be understood from a quick review of its contents, the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia seeks emphatically to affirm not the “ideal family” but the very rich and complex reality of family life. Its pages provide an open-hearted look, profoundly positive, which is nourished not with abstractions or ideal projections, but with pastoral attention to reality. The text is a close reading of family life, with spiritual insights and practical wisdom useful for every human couple or persons who want to build a family. Above all, it is the result of attention to what people have lived over many years. Indeed, the exhortation Amoris Laetitia: On love in the family speaks the language of experience and of hope. Growing Changes: Occupational Therapy Services for Children

presents: Fine Motor Summer Camp in July 2017

A week of fun and interactive camp for children in Kindergarten and grades 1 - 3 who find printing or other fine motor activities challenging. The camp will be run by experienced pediatric occupational therapists. A multi-sensory approach will be used along with co-operative games and crafts to practice the skills needed for hand functioning. This camp is designed for children who may be experiencing mild to moderate delays in fine motor development or who would benefit from extra practice. The camp places an emphasis on grasp development, formation of lower case letters, legible printing, copying shapes and letters, using school tools (pencils, scissors, glue), in hand manipulation skills, eye hand coordination and strength. This includes a summary report identifying individual children's strengths, areas of need, and suggestions for further skill development will be provided.

This camp will use a multi-sensory approach combining fine and gross motor movement to enhance learning. Parents are encouraged to attend the first of the four sessions in order to help their child feel more at ease in the group and to learn how to support their child with printing practice at home.

Buses are not routed to travel down cul-de-sacs, crescent or go into parking lots or condo complexes. Bus stop locations are at designated school bus zones, transit zones, future transit zones, far side of crosswalks or far side of intersections. Parents are advised to exercise their own discretion as to how long a student should wait for the bus.

13. Parents should instruct their children in safety and the rules for riding school buses. A Guide to Using Yellow Bus Services is available from schools and on the district website at www.ecsd.net.
