Spring
- Prune shrubs that flower in the late spring or early fall. Also prune perennial grasses.- Transplant shrubs and trees as the soil thaws. Transplanting at this time helps reduce the amount of
stress the plants go through during the move since the temperatures aren’t too hot yet. - Divide perennials that are well established. Again, spring is the perfect time to divide perennials that
bloom later into the summer and fall. - Stir mulch in landscaping to minimize the amount of weeds and to loosen up the mulch from being
packed down all winter.- Apply crabgrass preventer. - Apply rabbit repellent.- Fertilize shrub roses with an insecticide and disease preventer such as Start and Grow and Rose Food.- Stake plants, such as peonies, hibiscus, delphiniums, and tomatoes to protect them from rain and wind
damage.- Fertilize lawns if they were stressed during the previous fall or if there were issues with crabgrass.- Apply fertilizer to plants to boost growth.- Remove tree covers.
Summer- Prune flowering shrubs and perennials after they have finished blooming to create a nice shape and
promote blooming later in the season. Remember, pruning promotes blooming.- Fertilize acid loving plants such as blue hydrangeas as stated on the back of the fertilizer container.- Apply slug repellent to plants such as hostas.- Continue to fertilize all plants as directed.- Spray perennial weeds using.- Later in the summer transplant early blooming perennials such as lilies, peonies, hosta, and astilbe.
Fall- Fertilize and winterize lawns in late September to October- Continue to water plants and trees until the ground freezes to prevent roots from rotting during the
winter. - Place tree protectors on young trees to prevent damage during the winter.- Mulch around bases of shrubs and perennials. Apply chicken wire if deer or rabbits are an issue.- Apply deer repellent as directed.- Plant spring bulbs.
