Page 2: Newsletter - Glendale Quilt Guildbridesmaid dresses, and other discards from our Guild Members and turning them into an extraordinary quilt. Traveler’s Advisory~ I was recently in

food presented there has little resemblance

to anything you might order here.

For example, I give you the “Breakfast

Burrito.” The plate arrived with an entree

that certainly looked like a burrito; but

when I cut into it, mashed potatoes and

gravy oozed out the side. These were

followed by thin medallions of jalapeno

pepper and sausage slices resembling

peperoni along with copious amounts of

scrambled eggs. Who puts gravy in a

burrito? I’m going to have nightmares for

months.

So if you find yourself in Nebraska or

Iowa, exercise caution. Save yourself a lot

of disappointment…and indigestion. Stay

away from anything that pretends to be an

ethnic restaurant. Better yet, stay in and

let Aunt Sally try to fry a cucumber.

Stitch, Quilt, Love, Barb

Pat Rollie gave us a wonderful presentation

last month. “The Magic of Mistakes”, was

truly inspiring. She had many of her amazing

award winning quilts to display and used

them as examples of “mistakes” that had

developed during construction. She then

explained the steps she took to solve the

problems and turn every one of them into a

masterpiece.

The highlight of the evening was the

presentation of the 2012 Opportunity Quilt.

Pat told me weeks ago that she was very

pleased with this work of art. She thinks this

year’s Opportunity Quilt is one of the finest

pieces she has ever created, and after having

seen it, I have to agree. It is a fabulous art

quilt. Thank you, Pat for taking old

bridesmaid dresses, and other discards from

our Guild Members and turning them into an

extraordinary quilt.

Traveler’s Advisory~ I was recently in the

mid-west. The first evening I saw a public

service announcement on one of the three

available TV channels. An overweight man

wearing a t-shirt with “Iowa” on it was in a

grocery store produce department looking at

a cucumber like it was an alien life form. The

thin young man next to him wearing a

“Denver” t-shirt said, “Man, you don’t want

that…you can’t fry it.”

My family has some really wonderful

cooks. Unfortunately when you travel into

rural areas the family wants to take you to

their new fabulous Mexican, Chinese, Indian,

or Tai restaurant. They have a need to prove

to you that their town population of 102,

counting all the pigs and dogs of course, has

become very cosmopolitan. Sadly, the ethnic

A big thank you to Dovie Kapoh for donating Daddy’s Ties to the library. We

now have 4 books that specifically relate to the 2012 show theme. Check them out. Relax. Enjoy. Dream. And thank you to Marie Bostwick, a New York Times bestseller author. She sent us a

free copy of her recently published book, Threading the Needle. In 2008, when A Single Thread was published she donated a handful of copies to quilt guilds. Her

stories center on a group of women who “stitched their lives and lovely quilts together. Her website is www.MarieBostwick.com. She captured my interest after

Loving Hands would like to invite members to join in the fun on

August 12th at 10:00 a.m., at 1038 E. Elmwood, Burbank 91501

We will be making kits and labels.

The Glendale Quilt Guild and Loving Hands would like to personally acknowledge the following people who contributed their time, talent and resources to our Philanthropic efforts for the months of June and July. This effort of preparing quilts for numerous charities in the Los Angeles County under the label of "Glendale Quilt Guild Loving Hands" is wonderful.

We know there are many others contributing in many ways that do not care to be individually acknowledged, but "we" know who you are and are very grateful for your contribution. Keep up the great work! Thank you . . .

Meeting Opening: Called to order at 6:30 p.m. by

President Barbara Gibson.

She thanked Mary Ann Kroening for hosting our

meeting once again. Minutes of the last board

meeting were unanimously approved as amended.

Treasurer: Margie Emmons distributed copies of

the of the June Treasurer’s Report for review. She

announced the signature cards for the new year need

to be signed at the bank. Copies of the final budget

must be turned in to the accounts for the tax return

by November, so changes, if any, must be completed

by then. Filing of the annual statement of

information with the California Secretary of State

can’t be done until October and per the bylaws, it is

to be done by the Recording Secretary.

New Business: The August 4th Board meeting

location is to be announced.

Vice President: Mary Ann Kroening will set up all

tables at the next meeting for the annual potluck,

everyone to bring their own drink, also. She has

been collecting items for door prizes from the various

affiliates.

Newsletter: President Gibson and board members

commented favorably on the new configuration of the

newsletter and she advised that all information for

the newsletter is due Monday, July 18th. Nan Maples

(printer) will work with Melinda on the timing of the

release to the website vs. the mailing. All corrections

are to be sent to the Recording Secretary in a timely

manner, to enable her to get them on the final copy

sent to Melinda.

Programs/Workshops: Colleen Shier announced

the following programs/workshops:

August: Anne Copeland “Quilt Appraisals” and will

appraise your quilt (limit one per member), with a

program following at Patchwork Penguin “Quilt Repair

and Restoration”.

September: Margarette Tate, “Choosing Fabric and

Quilts Best Suited for Dimension and

Embellishing”;workshop Sept. 17 “Sunflowers &

More”

October: Judy Sisneros –“Imagination and Inspiration”; workshop Oct. 13 “Batik Scramble”

She also offered several suggestions for future

programs and workshops, with websites for these

people to us to access, asking that the Board get

back to her after they have had a chance to check

out the websites. She presented a suggested form

to pre-register members for the next 4 upcoming

workshops, offering a special deal of $35 per

workshop for those who sign up and pay ahead of

time. It will be presented at the next Guild meeting.

Membership: Annette Guerrero expressed concern

regarding posting the name, address and e-mail

address of new members in the newsletter and on

Ether’s home computer. Annette proposed that at

the next Board meeting suggested solutions to this

problem be brought forward. President Gibson

advised that all other guilds in the state are posting

the names, etc. in their newsletter and she does not

see any real reason to change at this point, since we

do not update the roster during the year.

Quilt Show 2012: Brandi Nalley said they are still

looking to fill positions for the Show – workshops and

merchandise need to be filled quickly. She asked for

suggestions from the Board. The first meeting of the

Quilt Show Committee is tentatively set for July 28th.

Parliamentarian: Nan Maples passed out copies of

the amended Bylaws for those who wished to have a

copy (in larger print). These will be posted on the

website.

Loving Hands: Receipts for the last 3 donations in

June were presented to President Gibson in the

absence of the Philanthropy Chair. Loving Hands’

goal is to be able to hand out tops, backs and batting

at the next general meeting for people who wish to

complete a quilt, assuming Loving Hands gets the

batting. They are considering making different

sizes/styles of kits to target different needs.

New Business: Brandi Nalley suggested a Pillow

Case Challenge for the Guild as a part of the Million

Pillowcase Challenge. The pillowcases will be

donated to 3 local charities to be determined. Mary

Ann suggested holding the pillowcase challenge

during the November Guild meeting as there is no

speaker scheduled.

Other Business: President Gibson reminded us we

are still looking for a Hospitality Chair and Esther

Norbut has agreed to take on the Guild Publicity (not

the Show publicity). She thanked Brandi for her first

Block of the Month. Nan Maples suggested that each

person look at the website and see if any changes

should be made. Esther Norbut will continue to be

Telephone/Email Tree and Sabine Steinmetz will be

taking over as Historian. Esther Norbut’s list of suggestions was tabled until the next meeting.

Meeting adjourned: 9:35 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Frances Brannon

Welcome to the Membership Committee’s new

column, “Who am I?” where we introduce you to a

mystery Guild member and let you guess who this

member is. The identity of this month’s mystery

member will be revealed at the August meeting.

Members who correctly identify our mystery

member will be eligible to enter a drawing for a

luscious fat quarter . Just come to the August

meeting and submit your answer for the drawing.

So, who is our mystery member for August?

This mystery member (from now on called MM) is a

long time member of GQG and has served in three

positions: membership, workshops and as vice

president. MM enjoys being a member of this Guild

because of the wonderful comeraderie of quilters.

She has been a crafter all her life but only started

making quilts when family members started getting

married and having babies. MM enjoys all types of

quilts but MM’s favorite quilt pattern is the Bow Tie.

MM has been married for 48 years (this month!);

has three children and five grandchildren. Although

MM is now retired from nursing, MM is still an angel

because gentle reader I think all nurses are angels.

And now some interesting glimpses into MM’s

personality by looking at her favorites:

Book: The Prophet

Movie: Pride and Prejudice

Actor: Tom Hanks

Actress: Elizabeth Taylor

Music: country/western and opera (?!)

Food: chocolate (of course!) and mochi balls

If MM was a famous person, what kind of car would

MM drive? A Rolls-Royce or Porsche Cayenne.!

Finally, something you may not know about MM is

that creativity runs in her family as her sister just

had her first art show and sold 30 paintings.

Congratulations to your sister MM! So, have

guessed who MM is? Here is a hint: MM is one of

these four members: Karen Millman, Alice Turner,

Mary Ann Kroening or Sharon Bishop. GOOD LUCK!
