“Sierra Small Stream Fishing“

Scott’s slide presentation will focus on several of his favorite small

streams including Rock Creek in Little Lakes Valley and King Creek in

the John Muir Wilderness among others.

He will also cover many of your old favorite waterways like the San

Joaquin River and the Owens River (both of which are technically

“small streams”) with a few surprises thrown in.

Don’t miss what promises to be an wonderful evening of fishing

reminiscences.

FISHING SMALL STREAMS

I think it goes without saying that everyone likes to catch big fish. The human

struggle with nature insists that we conquer or perish and since we no longer have to deal

with saber toothed cats, hooking and landing large trout becomes a decent substitute.

However the ascent of man has also engendered in us the love of art and of fi-

nesse. Because we can’t always be catching big fish, and because small fish are so much

more abundant, we have learned to adjust our techniques to make little fish seem…..big.

In fly fishing it is easy to adjust our tackle to the quarry, thus maximizing the

amount of skill and finesse it requires to land smaller fish. I surely wouldn’t suggest using a

2 wt. rod on Crowley Lake because in that case you will lose the battle almost certainly with

anything you hook, however take that same rod and light tippet to Little Lakes Valley and

you will have the best of times hooking 6 to 8 inch brook trout. Lots and lots of 6 to 8 inch

brook trout and that is a joy that should not be missed.

So don’t pass those small streams by. Carry a 2 wt. rod and indulge in a little back

country small fry fishing and relax, the big ones aren’t going anywhere.

by Charley Beals

I left Thousand Oaks about 5am Saturday and arrived in Kernville just after 8am, caught Breakfast at the Kernville Golf Course then went to Kern River Fly Shop – spoke to Guy Jean and Kimberley about what fish activity I could expect – they were both really helpful, great shop – the report was “BWO hatch about One pm-ish lasting about 2 hrs, afternoons are bet-ter than mornings”. Guy Jean looked over my fly box and sug-gested #18 Olive WD40. I bought some flies, had some coffee and went fishing. (Kern Slot - photo #1) Just like Guy had suggested – I pulled into a dirt parking lot about 5 miles north of town, rigged up a double nymph on 5x - #16 olive hares ear on top and #18 Olive WD40 on 6x below the hares ear. The boulders were very slippery so bring your staff. River was running about 250 cfs – sunny sky and no wind temps mid 70’s no crowds. I had a good day netting 6 fish, all rainbow trout 12-16 inches. Although I changed the top fly many times – they all fell to the Olive WD40. (photo #2) The hatch where I was at 1-3 mediocre at best – no fish rising were I was but I didn’t know the river. The last spot I fished looked very good, I only landed one – there was several stonefly nymphs clinging to boulders in the eddy’s at water level – they were all about the size of a small paperclip. On the way out of town I grabbed a sandwich at the Freemont Deli – the owner Alyssa was super nice and the sandwich was A++ !! I like the Kern area – lots of options for fishing – get out there! - Charley

Hello Conejo Valley Fly Fisher members,

– I have put together the framework for a schedule of

outings for the club and I would appreciate any feed-

back as I solidify the dates.

– If you know of a productive month to visit a certain

destination then please let me know.

– My goal is to have at least one local outing per quar-

ter and add in one to two “other than mammoth” trips

in the better fishing months.

Bill threatens National Monuments and Antiquities Act

Nov 2017 - It misrepresents the true value and use of the law: The

Antiquities Act has long been a bi-partisan tool for conservation

used by both Republicans and Democrats to conserve important fish

and wildlife habitat. This tradition goes back to Theodore Roosevelt,

who created Mount Olympus National Monument to protect habitat

for Olympic Elk, later renamed Roosevelt Elk in his honor.
