Hub4Health
Freelance …. It Is Not Bad News
During Hub4Health’s long life we have always been reliant
on government funding to provide much needed services
across the district. We started out canvassing for medical
and clinical services and 15 years later are still doing the
same.
The federal government’s new tender/commissioning
model has seen many small organisations such as ours fall
by the wayside as larger organisations with the capacity to
write tenders and provide state wide services win tenders.
It is a sign of the times. We could choose to fall or become
the ‘David’ to the government ‘Goliath’.
However difficult it may be moving into the future and it will
certainly have its challenges, we at Hub4Health will
continue to provide the range of services we see as
invaluable. Some of them are considered by others small
services, such as the Toe Nail Clinic where we have a current
client list of 260. However simple the service may seem, the
lack of it will have a big impact. Other programs are
individually focused, for example Gentle Walking helps one
person at a time gain confidence in walking. Other programs
are group based, with over 50 individuals managing chronic
illness, registered for Fitness and Strength across the district
and 169 users of the St Marys Community Gym programs.
Our services cover physical, mental and social wellbeing;
from birth to 99; from preventative and proactive health/
social initiatives to clinics that help support those living with
disease and illness. We work across the municipality and
beyond into Dorset and Glamorgan /Spring Bay.
You can choose, face a challenge with a defeatist attitude or
with a positive mindset. Hub4Health chooses the later.
There are advantages about being ‘freelance’. We are best
able to provide flexible and changing programs to meet
community need without the need to ‘stick within scope’ of
a government contract and we are able to canvass and lob-
by governments for service provision as is needed without
fear or favour. We will still be actively pursuing funding and
fundraising will be a part of our future, however we remain
confident that good work and strong ethics will be rewarded
and we know we have strong community backing.
Warm regards,
Hub4Health Team, staff and Board of Management

PLACEPLACEPLACEPLACE
CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH HEALTH AND COMMUNITY
SERVICES
Hub4Health is in the process of rolling out the RIGHT PLACE
community care initiative. The aim is to better connect people
with health and community services and enhance knowledge
of what services are about and how to access them
The RIGHT Place was developed and trialled in the Huon
Valley over the past 18 months with great success; and was
sponsored by Primary Health Tasmania.
It was developed in consultation with the community which
identified local issues and potential solutions relating to an
integrated approach to health care.
Rachel from Hub4Health will be contacting key community
members over the next weeks, across all of the municipality to
look at regional issues and identify key people/organisations
that will provide a long term solution for residents in assisting
them to find and contact the health/community service they
need. To find The RIGHT Place for them.
Digital Technology….Here to Stay For many of us now regarded as the ‘older generation’ the
move to digital technologies can be difficult. However there is
no doubt that it is here to stay and developing at a rapid rate.
One such change is the move to electronic health records.
Having a “My Health Record” means your important health
informaon can be digitally stored in one place. Healthcare
providers like doctors, specialists and hospital staff can see
these details online from anywhere at any me when they
need to. You can access your health informaon from any
computer with an internet connecon.
As part of the RIGHT PLACE we will be skilling key people in
the local area how to assist you in registering and accessing
your health informaon on-line. Local people helping local
people.

Building Blocks April 2017
Newsle;er
This month at Building Blocks we will be joining in with a range of community Easter celebraons—
sharing a special morning tea and craS acvies for children. We are excited to be vising new
communies in Dorset, with a pop and play session at Jetsonville—see our calendar for more details.
We will be focusing on fine motor skills this month—strengthening lile hands and working on the
important skills children need for cuHng, drawing, wring and many other tasks.
Sleep Managing sleep for babies and children is one of the most common concerns for parents. Many worry about
whether they are doing the right thing if their child doesn’t sleep soundly all through the night. There are many
different ways for parents to help babies and children to sleep, and paerns vary between cultures and families.
What maers most is that bedme is relaxed and comfortable and that babies and children have comfort when
they need it and that they are safe. If things aren’t working well for you, some of the following informaon may
help.
Some facts about sleep
Types of sleep
There are two main kinds of sleep – light sleep and deep sleep.
Light sleep is when we dream and ‘go over’ the day’s events and
wake feeling refreshed. It is also the kind of sleep where we wake
more easily. With babies this is 80% of sleep, but by adolescence it
is only about 20% of sleep. Deep sleep is when growing and heal-
ing takes place. It is much harder to wake people from this kind of sleep.
Each night we all go through sleep cycles from light sleep to deep sleep then light again. Babies move through these two types
of sleep but their cycle is shorter. Toddlers usually take about an hour for each sleep paern or cycle. It is between the stages
of light and deep sleep that as adults we might roll over to get comfortable and then fade back into sleep. For babies and tod-
dlers this may be where they cry and need help to resele back to sleep.
How long do babies and children sleep?
Sleep is very individual and can vary a lot at any age. Children in one family may have very different sleeping needs to those in
another family. Somemes a child’s sleep paern does not match their parents’ expectaons. The best way to work out how
much sleep your baby or child needs is to keep a sleep diary or chart. Mark when your baby or child is asleep and when she is
awake. This way you can get an average of how much sleep she needs each day. Talk to your health professional if you’d like
help to do this.
Remember that sleep needs change quickly as babies and children grow and you need to adapt to these changes. More info

Why Tai Chi
Tai Chi is oSen described as "meditaon in moon," but it might
well be called "medicaon in moon." There is growing evidence
that this mind-body pracce, which originated in China as a
maral art, has value in treang or prevenng many health
problems. And you can get started even if you aren't in top shape
or the best of health.
In this low-impact, slow-moon exercise, you go through a series
of moons and as you move, you breathe deeply and naturally. Tai
Chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit to people
confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery.

Wed 15th March: Beerbarrel Beach Carpark - Burns Bay via the
dams
(Leader- Wayne Fulford)
12 parcipants met at the car-park on an overcast day. A cool
blustery breeze & choppy seas greeted us as we made our way
south toward Burns Bay. Brilliant coastal views south to Scamander
& Falmouth with the stunning uplands views could be seen. Halfway
along the group deviated inland to the dams dug some me ago.
ASer a bit-of-a-bushbash, we made it to the gravel road & then
onward to the bay. ASer a breather, we returned to where the cars
were parked; refreshed & invigorated.
Sat 18th March: Simeon Place to Blanche Beach
(Leader: Alex Buchanan)
Ten members set off from the end of Simeon Place and enjoyed a
leisurely walk, northwards, around the margin of Georges Bay,
taking advantage of the low de. At first the going was a lile
squelchy underfoot as we follow Simeon Place to the edge of the
estuarine samphire flats, but on rounding Pelican Point the shore
became more sandy, though strewn with dead boobialla branches.
We passed a few fishermen, one landed a sizeable trevally, and a
large ray shadowed us in the shallows as we walked along the
water's edge. Next we followed the Blanche Point track out to the
newly extended training wall at the entrance to Georges Bay and
then we turned right onto Blanche Beach.
At the eastern end of the beach we found a rough track that
eventually emerged onto the road very near the turnoff to the St
Helens Point Light. Lunch with a view was had at the light, the long
sweep of Maurouard Beach disappearing into the distance. ASer
lunch we dropped down to the seaward coast and so began the long
beach-walk back towards our starng point. We turned off
Maurouard Beach and followed the track over the granite quarry hill
and out to the road.
The short walk along Simeon Place completed the loop.
