Model Farms High School has been involved in the program for several years, and in 2017, we are represented by Zeinab Olomey, pictured below with her

community coach.

We wish Zeinab every success in the program and look forward to hearing about her personal learning and project implementation throughout the year.

P and C At Model Farms High School, we are fortunate to have an outstanding group

of parents continually supporting the school through both the P and C and School Council. Both of these bodies play an important role in the decision making and functioning of Model Farms and I encourage all parents to be

involved in making a positive difference.

I would like to highlight two fundraising initiatives from the P and C. Firstly, the Entertainment Book and Digital Membership ($65) provides over $20 000 worth of discounts and 2 for 1 offers at popular restaurants and attractions.

Each purchase of a book or membership provides funding to support the school.

To order your book or membership and support Model Farms, visit the secure

online site at: http://www.entbook.com.au/123c374

The second fundraising initiative is “Comedy for a Cause”, featuring

comedians from the Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals, held at Model Farms on Saturday 5 August 2017. Tickets for this 18yr + event can be purchased from:

www.comedyforacause.net/MFHS

Thank you to the P and C and School Council for their ongoing support.

LMBR During this term and next term, the school is undergoing a significant change

in our operation. Every Department of Education school is going, or has already undergone this change, known as LMBR.

The Learning Management and Business Reform (LMBR) program will address outdated systems that no longer meet our needs with new,

integrated systems that will support the vital work of schools across NSW.

One of the key components of LMBR is a modern centralised finance system, aiming to deliver the best outcomes for our students and community

members.

The school will “go live” with LMBR early in Term 3 and we are currently informing our suppliers and vendors of the change in operation, whilst three of our staff have commenced their training and development. Any change in

our practices that impact on community members will be communicated as early as possible. I thank you in advance for your understanding during this

time.

Executive Conference On Wednesday 31 May and Thursday 1 June, the school executive attended

the annual conference, as part of their professional development and planning.

This conference was particularly important, due to the large number of new syllabi being implemented in 2018 and the changes in Stage 6 assessment

practices resulting from the “Stronger HSC” state wide implementation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the executive team for their

continued quality leadership in implementing these changes. School Spectacular 2017

Congratulations to Mr Montgomery and our Drama students for being selected to perform in the 2017 Schools Spectacular. Performances will be

held on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 November 2017 at Qudos Bank Arena. Further details will be provided as the date approaches.

FROM THE RELIEVING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MS DALTON

Term 2 continues to be busy. So far this term NAPLAN has been completed, Year 11 have finished their Half Yearly Exams, Years 7 and 9 are undergoing

their Half Yearly assessments and reports are well under way.

During this Term, our Welfare WISE program is addressing the issues surrounding the internet. Year 7 have been looking at how to protect themselves when online, what are the dangers and how they can ensure

their safety. They are also talking about chat rooms and the information they share to strangers, including posting photos of themselves and others and

when it is ok to share. The issues of bullying and cyberbullying are hot topics of discussion. They also enjoyed a reflection of their camp adventures and watched Brainstorm productions "Sticks and Stones" dealing with bullying

and aggression.

Year 9 have been looking at how to behave appropriately online and

why it is important. They are looking at the pitfalls of communicating over the internet and are discussing tips on how to be respectful. They

are examining flaming, acronyms, emoticons and their meanings as ways of communicating effectively. They have been investigating

getting "job ready" and completing applications online and will be

receiving a talk on legal issues when it comes to online behaviour.

Year 11 have been looking at how the websites they use give them an online identity that can be traced back to them. They will be talking

about how to manage their personal e-reputation and to think about the effect of this on their future for potential employment. They are

discussing responsible posts and how they are perceived online. A workshop on "My Digital Thumbprint" will be given in Term 4. They will

also undertake a careers talk about future employment, ATAR's and tertiary study. This term will also see discussion of Jersey designs for

2018.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MS PLEDGER Reports

Term 2 is a busy time as all the teaching staff have been completing Half Yearly Reports.

A reminder that reports for Years 7 to 11 will be published to the parent portal. If you have not joined the portal and require your access code, please

contact our TSO on 9624 3133. A frequently used comment that appears on student’s reports concerns the

effective use of class time.

The main advantage of using class time efficiently is that students who complete more work in class then have less to do at home. This is also the best opportunity for students to maximise their learning and increase their

understanding of the topics being presented.

Working effectively in class means that students are encouraged to: Sit next to someone who will help them stay on task.

Ask questions whenever they are unsure, unclear or do not understand a concept. This may be of assistance to other students who are also

unclear about the work being presented.

Be prepared. Come to the lesson with all books, technology and equipment needed.

Try at all times to stay on task and be focused on the work they are

doing.

Subject Selection On Monday evening, last week, Year 10 students and parents were invited to

attend an information session about subject selection for Year 11 2018. There are a couple of key points that parents and students need to

understand about subject selection and its impact on individual student’s performance.

1. At times, parents can become fixated on selecting subjects that “scale” the highest and force students to do these subjects for this reason

alone. This is a mistake. 2. Students who pick subjects or courses they are not good at, or are not

interested in, will do worse in these subjects than in subjects they are good at or are interested in. What is the point of picking a subject which

you can only get 30% just because it is scaled up by 6 marks? If the student picked a course they are interested in, or more able in, and achieved a mark of 60% then they are still ahead even if they are

scaled down slightly.

3. Performance is strongly impacted on by motivation and hard work. If you are interested, you stay engaged. The HSC is a long-haul. If you hate what you study it can feel like a lifetime.

NESA’s advice about which Courses get a good ATAR? Just about any combination of courses can lead to a good ATAR; it all

depends on how well a student has done in all their courses in comparison to other students. Don't choose courses based on what you believe are the

likely effects of scaling. Your choices should be based on your interests, demonstrated abilities and the value of courses for future career plan.

My advice is to choose subjects you like and are good at, this means you will be more likely to study. If you do this then the rest will work itself out.

Syllabus Updates and NESA In 2018, a number of new syllabi will be introduced into Year 11.

Unfortunately, at this point in time NESA (previously The Board of Studies) have not finalised many aspects of these documents. The flow on effect is

that we may not know all the answers to your questions regarding these courses and their requirements.

As soon as we are provided with any updated information that may affect subject selection, we will let all Year 10 students and parents know and will

discuss the impact with individuals.

New Stage 6 School-Based Assessment Requirements From 2018 New school-based assessment requirements will apply for all Stage 6 Board Developed Courses from 2018. The new requirements reflect the Stronger

HSC Standards reforms announced in July 2016. If you are interested in reading more about these changes, then please read the attached Parent

Information Flyer. Year 11 Students of 2018 will begin their senior secondary studies with the

new syllabuses in English, Mathematics, Science and History. Year 12 Students in 2019 will be the first to complete the HSC examinations using

these revised syllabuses.

CAREERS OFFICE Yrs 11 and 12

This has been a busy Term with interviews for Yr 11 and 12 students needing information about the Universities and degrees they are interested in pursuing.

UAC applications open online on August 2nd and if a Yr 12 student needs to

understand the process of application they can see me. The UAC book will be out next term and given to those students who wish to attend a NSW university. If any student needs to find out about early entry, scholarships,

bonus points and new degrees please go to the uni website for further information. I will also be discussing these options and UAC applications as a

whole year group in Term 3. Yr 10

Students in Yr 10 are career focused and have made appointments for University information and degrees they are interested in investigating. They

are also discussing the process of apprenticeships and traineeships after they have finished their ROSA. Some of these students are on a journey of TAFE one day a week and work experience one day a week in their chosen field.

This gives them a taste of the career they want and experience to try and gain an apprenticeship.

Some students still haven’t organised their work experience and time is running out to secure a placement. They need to ring some companies to see

if they can do their work experience with them. It is more appropriate if the student rings as this gives them the confidence and maturity they will need

in the workforce. Remember it may take a few phone calls till they receive a YES to their request for the placement, so they shouldn’t give up.

Careers Expo is on June 22nd and this is a great opportunity for Yr 10 and 12 students to check out what is available to them in the form of University,

Apprenticeships and the processes involved in career choice. Students will enjoy the day as they are with friends and there will be a variety of stands where they can talk to graduates, Defence forces members and experienced

staff from many sectors of the workforce.

Around our English Classrooms…

Year 7 Well done to Year 7 who completed their Naplan Assessments during week 3.

For the remainder of this term they will be closely analysing the film ‘Red Dog’. Students will be exploring how film techniques shape our perceptions of character and themes in the film. All classes will be working towards

writing an extended response on the film.

Year 8 Year 8 classes are continuing their study of the picture book genre. They are being skilled in analysing the visual and literary techniques in these books as

well as appreciating the complementary relationship between image and texts. Highly conceptual picture books such as Shaun Tan’s The Rabbits and

The Arrival are challenging their perceptions of this genre. All year 8 students should be thinking about and working on their Picture Book Assessments. Their final product should showcase the skills and knowledge they have

developed in the course of this unit.

Year 9 Congratulations to Year 9 who have completed their last Naplan Assessment. This term each Year 9 class is undertaking a close study of a novel in class.

The novels vary between classes and students are working towards writing an extended response on their texts. Year 10 Year 10 are wrapping up their close study of a novel this term. Their

speeches will reflect their understanding of the characters, ideas and language in each novel.

Year 11 Year 11 have received their feedback on their Half Yearly papers and should

be reading through these carefully. It is important to reflect on what their strengths and weaknesses were in the exams so that they can work towards building the necessary skills for their Yearly Exams. All classes are closely

analysing dramatic texts in class.

Year 12 Year 12 Standard attended a theatrical performance of The Shoehorn Sonata’ by John Misto. Viewing the play on stage is critical in developing

students’ appreciation of the dramatic qualities of the text. This Term they have undertaken a study of the novel The Story of Tom Brennan’ under the

module ‘Making Transitions’. English Studies classes have continued exploring the close and problematic

nature of the relationship between sports and media through a variety of texts. They are working towards writing a feature article that will highlight

their understanding of the issues raised in class. Advanced English are studying ‘People and Landscapes’ with a focus on the

novel Brooklyn by Colm Toibin.

Merit List Congratulations to all the students who received a faculty merit in English.
