It was wonderful to have everyone back onsite here at school on Monday. We are fortunate to be able to be together as Term 3 starts and for students and staff to be able to meet with one another in new elective and pathway classes and in those other studies that continue this semester. It seems a defining feature of the last two school holidays has been a changing social climate and spikes in COVID cases, I imagine it has been difficult for everyone to switch off with the escalation of community concern and the restriction on Melburnians and Victorians as a result of the growing number of cases. It is all part of the challenge that 2020 is presenting. As we return this week, we are continuing to be vigilant in social distancing and personal safety here at school. We are currently relatively fortunate in Horsham, but that has been achieved through the responsibility of the broader Horsham community and may change. No cases of COVID-19 have been reported amongst the community of St Brigid’s and so it is business as “normal”, although “normal” has taken on a new meaning this year. I ask that families please continue to communicate with their children about the importance of social distancing, personal hygiene and sanitising. The priorities for the St Brigid’s community throughout the pandemic continue to be; Maintaining the safety of the entire St Brigid’s community Ensuring we remain connected and support one another Ensuring continuity of quality learning and teaching • Being willing to adapt, change and try new things, recognising that we will make mistakes at times. Metropolitan schools are having thermometers rolled out this week to temperature check students. Current medical advice received is that this is not expected of schools outside the metropolitan and Mitchell Shire areas. St Brigid’s College is not temperature checking at this stage. Once again, current medical advice states that it is not recommended that face masks be worn by students or staff at St Brigid’s. If however, staff or students feel safer wearing them, then they are encouraged to do so. As a staff team we are looking at what worked well and what were our challenges through last term’s period of remote learning, we are also looking back to the feedback that we collected from students and families to inform what may occur in the future. We are hopeful that we will not need to revert to remote learning, but we must also be realistic that the prevalence of the virus and the situation in Melbourne means that there is a chance that this may occur. I will obviously maintain communication if there are any changes to the current government policy. In this period where regional and metropolitan Victoria have different frameworks for operations, we are keeping our priority on safety and trying to contain our educational activities to our community as much as possible. One of the significant risk minimising factors that we continue to adhere to for the safety of our community will be prioritising students and staff on campus. Our current advice specifies the importance of limiting adult to adult contact, so I ask that parents not enter St Brigid’s unless there is a legitimate need to come into the Front Office. Please contact the Front Office staff via phone in the first instance and our staff will work through the specifics of your need individually. Attendance on campus by non-essential visitors and parents will be limited.

There has been a substantive change in the media commentary around the use of face masks.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL continued...

Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College,

Peter GutteridgePrincipal

The canteen remains available to take lunch orders before school only between 8.30am and 8.50am each day. The canteen will remain closed at recess until such time that advice is received for its reopening. Students are reminded that they must bring a bottle of water from home which can be refilled at school given the use of the bubble taps remains off limits.

UNIFORM UPDATE

We would like to inform parents that St Brigid’s College is in the process of a whole-school student uniform review and a process of student/staff/family consultation will soon be undertaken

In the interim, we remind parents/guardians/carers of the following in regards to uniform;

• All students are expected to wear the full school winter uniform unless they have PE or are required to wear PE uniform for another subject such as Outdoor Education or Sports Academy.

• On the isolated instances when your child is unable to wear the full school uniform for reasons beyond your control (e.g. pants are ripped or jumper is dirty, etc) your child is asked to wear the full PE uniform with an appropriate parent note verifying the reason rather than a combination of the school and PE uniforms.

• No hoodies are to be worn under the school jumper.• If girls choose to wear the summer dress in lieu of

winter uniform, a white long sleeve top may be worn. Black tops are not to be worn. Should students be cold then they are to wear the prescribed winter uniform.

• Students may wear a plain white top under their school polo top for extra warmth but this does not replace our College jumper and jacket.

• Only the approved school jacket may be worn during school hours.

• Beanies may be worn outside during lunch and recess only and not inside.

• Students may wear either white or black socks with their winter uniform, but must wear white socks with the Sports uniform. These socks must be above the ankle and not a footlet or sockette.

If you have any clarification needed in regards to the uniform policy please contact your child’s Teacher Advisor. Once again, many thanks for your ongoing support with our school uniform.
