Founding of NEWSEDFounded as part of the national Community Development Corporation (CDC)

movement, NEWSED has been serving the Denver community since 1973 and will

be celebrating 40 years in 2013. CDCs are unique among nonprofit organizations

due to their emphasis on promoting economic development, characterized by

community leadership and work primarily in housing, commercial development

projects and job creation in low-income and marginalized communities.

NEWSED Housing Division Started(‘97) NEWSED begins a Housing Division with an initial focus of providing affordable housing services in the form of one-on-one counseling, down payment assistance and CHFA approved workshops for interested 1st time homebuyers. (‘98) As an added component to the Housing Division NEWSED begins the process of refurbishing and selling affordable single family homes. To date, NEWSED has developed over 100 homes.

(‘06) As an added component to the Housing Division and in response to community need NEWSED begins Foreclosure Counseling. Currently NEWSED is linked with the Colorado Foreclosure Hotline. (‘07) NEWSED restarts its Affordable Home Purchase program. Initially the program focuses on purchasing, renovating and selling formally foreclosed and HUD proper-ties, and several years later begins working with the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Beginning of Cinco de Mayo Festival (‘87) & Civil Rights Awards (‘92)Cinco de Mayo continues to be one

of the largest, most celebrated

festivals in the world, drawing

around 400,000 people annually.

NEWSED pays tribute to late board member, David Herlinger David passed away in 2012, after serving the NEWSED board honorably for 12 consecutive years. He gave extremely valuable guidance and support during his term. Thank you David, you will not be forgotten.

Letter from President, Veronica Barela

As we refl ect on the last 40 years there is a lot to be proud of and thankful for. NEWSED has been a steadfast force in the West Denver and greater Denver community through methods that have been, above all, transformative. NEWSED’s many economic and community development initiatives have touched the lives of families, individuals and entire communities in immeasurable ways.

Many thanks are owed to all of those who have played a part in NEWSED’s success. These people include but are not limited to; staff and board members both present and past, volunteers, clients, devel-opers, the City of Denver, various politicians, nonprofits, neighborhood collaborators, the business community, event attendees, donors, foun-dations, sponsors, government entities, consultants and many others. The list will no doubt continue to grow as we look forward to a future with new beginnings and opportunities.

As we enter this new chapter for NEWSED we will continue to offer the same holistic approach to programming that has expanded affordable housing options for Denver residents. Our housing rehab and homes for sale programs are steadily becoming a permanent initiative while keeping pace with a volatile economy and an ever changing political climate. Development projects both retail/commercial and rental hous-ing will also remain a focus. Counseling assistance that is confidential, inclusive and bilingual in the areas of first time home ownership and foreclosure are vital and will continue to be so for many years. The strives NEWSED’s merchant association - Santa Fe Drive Redevelopment Corporation (SFDRC) - has made in business and street scaping devel-opment for the Santa Fe Drive corridor are set for substantial growth by leveraging new neighborhood collaborations and developing more programs to assist start-up businesses. Finally, NEWSED’s cultural events will continue to celebrate civil rights, Latino heritage and serve as a national leader in the festival community.

Simply put, NEWSED makes Denver a great place to live. Our programs level the playing field and provide opportunities for the people we serve to improve their lives. We spur economic growth in the area around the Santa Fe Drive Cultural District and throughout the entire City and County of Denver. This is why our work matters and we hope to continue for decades to come.

Sincerely,

Veronica Barela, NEWSED President
