NEWS CASTS Newsletter of the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club Volume 65 March, 2014 ___________________________________________________________________________ Editor’s Message Sometimes I need to take a step back and appreciate the life I have; great wife, wonderful children, great place to live. We chose this place for a variety of reasons. I traveled back to Montana this month to visit my grown children and watch my granddaughter in a production. It was great to spend time with all of them. I was able to convince my 26 year-old son to return with me for a week. As Stacey and I showed him around we got to be tourists in our town and it was a blast. A lot of the things we enjoy involve water so we went to the aquarium, beach and fished. There is so much life in and around our waterways I sometimes don’t know which way to look and it was fun to share. Things I don’t miss about living up north? Falling on my butt, snow blowers, getting my car stuck on flat ground. Got a minute? We’re surrounded by water so let’s fish. March 2014 Forecast March is a tough time to consistently catch fish. While the weather improves and the water temperature rises, the fish do not adhere to any reliable pattern. So the key to success is flexibility. If the Redfish in the shallows are uncooperative, give them a try around deeper docks. If your favorite lure is not working, try live bait or blue crab. The same is true for Trout. Systematically cover the water column until the fish tell you what they want that day. March can be frustrating for anglers. However, if you are flexible in your approach, the odds are in your favor. Fishing reports

Bill Goff Bob Goodman, Chris McGarty and I went fishing with Capt. Jamie Hough on Feb 24. I caught a couple nice size red fish but Bob and Chris caught and released a couple of very large red fish...see photos! Thanks, Bill Goff

Julian Levin Only time I have been out was Monday 24th. Out w/ Greg and 2 of my nephews. It was a beautiful day, but one trout and one Red was all we could manage. Hope to be out tomorrow (sat) J Jim Lemcke Stacey and I went out the same day as Julian (above) with about the same result. Lot’s of fishing, not much catching. Stacey was camera shy but she caught bigger and more fish, as normal. My son Ty caught one trout from the dock Saturday. We got skunked Sunday from the boat.

More than just fishing My Daughter Katherine who lives in Idaho came for a weeklong visit this past week. She had the week pre-scheduled (by the family) for her with lots of family fun, dinners + a surprise birthday party for her Aunt. My goal was to fit in a little Kayak Fishing – looking at the family schedule and weather forecast it looked like Thursday we could sneak in 3 or 4 hours for the kayaks. What a great day we had. Went out for about 3 hours, didn’t really fish but went on a long walk along the Wando River shoreline. She collected some interesting shells but the big find was some old Bottles. Found a very collectable bottle: True Daffy Elixir - Dicey &Co No 10 Bow Church Yard London. Never pass up a chance to get on the water with family - Capt Dave

Recipe of the Month

Sweet Barbecue Salmon 4 (6-ounce) Salmon filets ½ C Soy Sauce 2 T Honey 1 T Dijon Mustard 1 T minced fresh parsley 2-3 Garlic cloves, minced Pierce the filets with a fork and place in a sealable plastic bag. Combine next 5 ingredients and place in a bowl and mix well. Pour the mixture over the salmon and seal tightly. Turn to coat. Marinate up to an hour. Be careful, as fish gets too salty if marinated longer. Grill over medium-high heat for 4 minutes per side (less for thin filets) or until the filets flake easily. Great served in a salad. Serves 4
