Get your (inside) kids outside!!
One of my very proudest moments as a dad came when my then 15
year old daughter caught her first Steelhead: It was a bright 7 pound male –
native and safely released back into the Wilson river. She is now 25 with a
child of her own and will soon be a member of the Newberg Steelheaders. She
still loves to fish and indeed has her daughter fishing. I don't know of another
little girl who knows what a “crappie” is.
Most parents you talk to are worried that their kids are “disconnected”
from reality: Too into gaming, texting, computers and social media. I think
we've been 'way over protective. Heaven forbid they should experience
something deemed as “negative” or maybe get a little dirt on them! Making
them stay inside away from all the stuff that life throws at them is a great way
to turn out adults who can't cope with adversity. If I'd done that 10 years ago, I
never would have had that proudest moment.
Here is a thought: Instead of that latest smart phone every kid just “has
to have”, buy him (or her) a fishing rod. Take them somewhere where they can
catch something. Show them how to clean it and cook it. Spend time with them
and teach them the value of the sport and the importance of protecting and
enhancing the resource. Maybe you'll grow a little closer. Maybe you'll have
kids better able to deal with and appreciate life.
It sure can't hurt.

We will have a display of spinners to use for the Coho salmon above Willamette Falls. Spinners that I made along with store bought spinners. Also Brad's and Storm Wiggle Warts. I had someone tell me they prefer the Storm plugs over Brad's. I haven't noticed a difference myself. An idea I posted on Facebook. You can buy weed tubes to go over your chain swivels. I couldn't find any a while back and used clear shrink tube that worked really well. One of our members Mike Maybury has another way to do something similar.
I will also bring my line setup. Show how I connect everything and use the same rigging for divers, dropper lead or just a lure. Below is a picture of the way I setup my main line. From there I attach Ande leader that I have a swivel tied to.
The slider setup is very versatile in that I can use it or not use it. Attach a diver or attach a leader with a lead ball.
I also use a lure Jensen diver 10' - 30' and a jumbo 50'. The smaller divers require a short leader tied to them for easy connect and disconnect.
Weed Tube (if too long cut it so the end of the chain sticks out and the snap is not stuck in the tube.)
Chain Swivel – I actually like the P-Line chain swivel better
Clip I think it is called a Duo Clasp by Lure Jensen in a Medium
I make leaders with Ande for trolling spinners or for cut plug herring. Hooks I use Gamakatsu.
Fishing Report:
Fishing along the coast has picked up. Arlene and I went with
Derek Clare to fish Tillamook Bay out of Garibaldi. We trolled
along the North Jetty then out in the ocean. Later pulled crab
traps. Lots of female crabs but we finally got nine keeper male
crab by the end of the day. Derek headed to the Ghost Hole.
About the time Derek was thinking of heading to the West Channel
people started hooking a few fish so we stayed. The kelp grass was
really bad so we had to constantly reel in to clean our line. I had
just cleaned my line let my line slowly out and bumped the
bottom. Then reeled up a couple turns. Put the rod in the holder
turned around and back to see my rod bent over. Derek
immediately gave the trolling motor gas, a good practice when
Chinook have a tendency to run at the boat. We landed a
beautiful Chinook that had to be around 32+ pounds.
Fishing lower Columbia has slowed down but good crabbing.
Below Bonneville still has fish but less fish being caught.

Ran out of space so here is my favorite Willamette Coho spinner. One that I make myself. My ideas and some from other successful fisherman and what they used.
Hildebrandt Indiana Gold #5, P-Line Hoochie, three Mylar Colors. Ruby Red Tri-
beads and a glow bead and of course a Gamakatsu treble (not the turned in points).

Meetup Website Helps Bring New and
Experienced Anglers Together If you’re a member of the Northwest Steelheaders, please take a moment to check out a new website that our organization supports. You can even sign up to become a member yourself! It’s easy, and membership is free. The web address is: http://www.meetup.com/NW-Steelheading-Group/ The goal of the website is twofold: First, we wanted a way to list all of our Steelheaders events, volunteer opportunities, and fishing events, so you can access this information quickly and easily. Second, we wanted a tool that would help us reach out to new (or experienced) fisherman and introduce them to the Association of Northwest Steelheaders. So give the website a look, or better yet sign up. Meet some new folks and help support new anglers looking to learn more about catching fish. Cheers! Jeff Hernandez

More Fishing Reports:
Arlene and I went out of Willamette for Coho Tuesday
Sept 25. Water was brackish brown and 60 degrees. We
hooked four jacks and landed two. We seen what could
of been Coho jumping but not sure. The jacks that we
hooked seemed to be in the 6' - 8' water. We covered
deep channels and areas 12' to 20' with no bites. It is still
early and things should change. It would help to get
some fresh rain to liven up the Coho. We
Tillamook Bay has been putting out some really nice
Chinook. A good dozen known fish around 40 pounds
have been caught. Troll a cut plug herring, no flasher,
with a dropper lead depends on current carry 6 - 12 oz.
Also spinners are catching fish. Use weed guards on
swivels.
