The mission of the Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts is to be a creative force and community resource providing cultural experiences for Newaygo County and surrounding areas.
The opening of the $7 million dollar facility in July 2002 was a fulfillment of a dream that began with Dan and Dorothy Gerber. Scotti Merrill and long-time family friend Ted Johnson spearheaded the effort by forming the Art Center for Newaygo County, a non-profit organization dedicated to plan-ning, building, and maintaining the Dogwood Center. Through grants from the Fremont Area Community Foundation and generous gifts from community members, the Dogwood Center now is an incredible cultural venue and resource for the entire area.
The Main Stage theater seats 400 and is equipped with state of the art technology, superb sound, booms, and an orchestra pit.
The Black Box, a cabaret style venue, has an adjacent catering room and is ideal for dinner theater or receptions.
The dedicated Board of Directors include: Sandy Siegel, Ken DeLaat, Sandy Williams, Jodi DeKuiper, Mary Anderson, Terrie Ortwein, Charles Chandler, Deb Reinhold, Jamie Denslow, Sherrie Harris, Mark Miller, Lisa Jahr and Danielle Merrill - Ex-Officio.

September 6 through October 14Jana Hanka - Wood Fired Clay Reception September 29, 5:30-7:00 p.m.Jansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace, 13 E. Main St., Fremont. 231-924-4022.
Jana earned her MFA from the Prague Academy of Fine Arts in 1980 and has been living in the USA since 1987. She has participated in several hundred shows in the intervening years - 60 of them as featured artist. Jana began life as a painter and has slowly evolved into a sculptor, employing clay and bronze. Her currently displayed work is mostly ceramic sculpture. “I have grown particularly fond of the
rough and unpredictable earthy effects created by ash deposits and microclimates within the large fire-breathing dragon of a kiln we use for week-long Anagama Japanese-style wood-firings. It is a force unto itself, beautiful and primal and the work that comes from the kiln is a reflection of that ancient process,” states Jana. “I died falling from a horse and woke up in a hospital a month later - and suddenly nothing is as it seems - ever again. My life and artwork were changed completely. All bets were off and my life became that of a seeker after truth and visions of the numinous and intangible. That’s what my works ultimately represent – me becoming something deeper in relationship and developing alongside the other - the non-human. Man and horse – a relationship that is ancient, beautiful, dangerous and ultimately enlightening.”

Sheryl Budnikthrough September 16
Dogwood Center GalleryMany of Sheryl’s paintings are about the power and emotion of water. Using oils and palette knives, she intuitively builds the paint skin, strives for a visual flash-point and searches for unknown places of the spirit.
Tim NorrisSeptember 19 through
November 18Dogwood Center GalleryTim Norris is an artist and professor of art from the Muskegon area. Tim’s large scale abstract paintings hold expression, and depth that demands the viewer’s time to take in the detail, the action, and the vibrancy in each.
October 18 through November 11Brenda Beerhorst - Order and ChaosReception October 26, 5:30-7:00 p.m.Jansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace, 13 E. Main St., Fremont. 231-924-4022.
“Over several years Brenda Beerhorst has developed an intuitive process of creating free form shapes in overlapping colorful layers of acrylic, gouache, and ink on wooden panels. With each successive layer, shapes and color blocks are created, rearranged or even covered completely. Between layers, delicate and timeworn textures are made through reductive
sanding. She works on multiple panels simultaneously, though the colors and patterns can vary significantly from one piece to the next as the works take on distinct personalities.” -Michael DeMaagd Rodriguez
As the wife of well-known Grand Rapids painter, Rick Beerhorst, and the mother of six artist children, Brenda has long been a familiar fixture in the West Michigan arts community. Raising
a household of eight is no light task, and when her family was younger it was understandably difficult to find time and space to cultivate a consistent studio practice.

Emmy-winning actor, musician and Michigan native Jeff Daniels comes to Dogwood Center with the Ben Daniels Band for one performance only! Jeff Daniels is best known for such blockbusters as: The Divergent Series: Allegiant/Ascendant, Steve Jobs, The Newsroom, Dumb And Dumber. In 1976, he bought a Guild D-40 from Herb David’s Guitar Studio in Ann Arbor, threw it in the back of his old Buick, and moved to New York City. That guitar led to a creative outlet, became a solace, a road into the artist that he didn’t know existed. Now, over 40 years later, he releases his 8th record, Simple Truths, and is touring the area with the Ben Daniels Band. Tickets $27.50. Main Stage, 7:30 p.m.

September 17 - The General AssemblyThe General Assembly was formed in the fall of 1971 by a group of musicians from the Ludington area. The players enjoyed the sounds of the big bands and wanted to regularly play the music long associated with such names as Basie, Kenton, Herman, Miller, the Dorseys, and others. Since that time the band has performed throughout Michigan, from the Detroit area to Traverse City, while receiving requests for appearances from as far away as San Francisco. The director of The General Assembly is its lead trombonist, Tom Sheppardson, who holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in music education, ranging from Dixieland jazz to the symphony orchestra. He has performed with such notables as Louis Armstrong, Max Roach, The Temptations, Bobby Vinton, Henry Mancini, Peter Nero, and many others. Tickets $12.50 Main Stage, 3:00 p.m.
