What a Week! There’s been a lot of work going on in our class. Here’s a look at what we are doing. We have had a wonderful week of first grade! The students continue to work to “be the best we can be!” Please remember that student work will be sent in the daily communication folder. If there is work that is incomplete, it is typically morning work that can be used as practice. If work needs to be completed, I will make note of it on the student’s paper. Papers and information that need to be returned will be in the front pocket of the folder. Papers or information that may be kept at home will be in the back pocket of the folder. Please remember to check out our class webpage, powellspostings.weebly.com. Math Our focus continues to be to use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns. We are also relating counting to addition and subtraction (for example by counting on 2 to add 2). Please review the math work that comes home with your student. Language Arts We will practice decoding tricky and unfamiliar words with a variety of strategies. When reading we will learn and practice before, during and after reading strategies to figure out the tricky parts of a text and to comprehend our reading. After reading we will ask and answer questions about key details in a text. When reading at home please have your child practice retelling the text. During Writer’s Workshop we are going to create small moment stories in which the students will retell two or more sequenced events, with some details regarding what happened in the beginning, the middle, and the end. The students will have many opportunities to write and share their thoughts. Social Studies/Science We have started our science unit, Comparing and Measuring. Our first lesson involved comparing how we are alike and different. It was a very interesting lesson! The students seem to enjoy science. Please remember to place your child’s Scholastic Book order by Monday evening. Orders are placed online using our class code (Ihttps://orders.scholastic.com/GR43M). Conference information will be sent home during this next week. Please email me if you have any questions. I am blessed to be your child’s teacher. Please have a wonderful weekend.
