ORIENTATION

Orientation will begin on Monday, August 28, and is mandatory for all incoming students. There are informational, educational and social sessions, in addition to classes, planned for your first week. These sessions are a great way to get to know your classmates, upper-level students, faculty and staff. You should be prepared to hit the ground running when you arrive. Personal arrangements

should be in place prior to August 28. You should also be aware that there are no classes scheduled for Monday, September 4 (Labor Day); Thursday, September 21 (Rosh Hashanah); or Monday, October 9 (Columbus Day). You can find the full 2017–2018 academic calendar on our website.

Page 6: NEW STUDENT INFORMATION PACKET - Northeastern University€¦ · 360 Huntington Avenue 135 Forsyth Boston, MA 02115 You may also submit it via fax to (617) 373-2601 or email to uhcs@northeastern.edu.

HEALTH REPORT

As a condition of your matriculation to Northeastern, it is mandatory that you turn in your health report.

You must submit the completed Health Report by July 28, 2017. We will not be able to register you for classes until your Health Report has been received. This is a state regulation and no exceptions will be made. The Health Report requires proof of immunity (Massachusetts law mandates proof of immunity for certain communicable diseases, including measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, tetanus and meningitis).

Please note:

• We anticipate the Fall 2017 Health Report will be available for download in May and we will send you an email notification at that time.

• All documentation must be signed by a health care provider.

• Documentation of immunizations can be obtained from your health care provider, schools that you have attended or military service records.

• Your name and NU ID number must be on all documents.

• Your birthdate must be on all documents.

Send the completed Health Report to:University Health and Counseling Services Northeastern University360 Huntington Avenue135 Forsyth Boston, MA 02115

You may also submit it via fax to (617) 373-2601 or email to [email protected].

If you have questions about completing the Health Report, contact University Health and Counseling Services at (617) 373-2772.

Massachusetts state law requires that all full-time and three-quarter-time matriculated graduate or professional students be enrolled in a health plan that meets state requirements. The Northeastern University Student Health Plan (NUSHP) meets and exceeds state requirements. This plan is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield and is required for students who do not have comparable coverage with another health insurance plan.

If you have comparable health insurance coverage, you may waive NUSHP by completing a waiver form and providing proof of domestic coverage by the waiver deadline for law students

(TBA). The waiver form can be found on myNEU. Please note that this form is available once you have been billed — which is usually in August.

For more information on health insurance and university and state policies:

• Massachusetts Health Insurance Regulations

• Northeastern University Student Health Plan (NUSHP)

• Northeastern University Health Insurance Waiver Deadlines

• University Health and Counseling Services

• Keep a copy of all the documents for your records.

HEALTH INSURANCE

An official, final undergraduate transcript showing all course work and a date of graduation is required to complete your file. We will not be able to register you for classes if an official academic transcript is not part of your NUSL record. Transcripts that meet these requirements must be processed by LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service (CAS). If you received your undergraduate degree prior to the 2016–2017 application cycle, your final undergraduate transcript should already be processed as part of the LSAC CAS service. In June we will notify you if for some reason your existing CAS transcript does not meet this requirement. If your transcript does not meet this requirement, you must submit a final undergraduate transcript, showing a date of degree conferral, to LSAC. Your transcript should be received by LSAC no later than July 1, 2017. Information on how to submit your transcript to LSAC is available here.

If you received your undergraduate degree during the 2016–2017 application cycle, you must send a final undergraduate transcript, showing a date of degree conferral, to LSAC for processing. You must submit a final undergraduate transcript to LSAC no later than July 1, 2017. Information on how to submit your transcript to LSAC is available here. As a reminder, you must have received a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university by the time of law school matriculation (August 28, 2017). Some students have attended more than one undergraduate institution. We only need an official transcript from the institution that awarded your bachelor’s degree. Additionally, we do not need official copies of graduate degree transcripts. If you have questions about whether you have met the transcript requirement, please contact us at [email protected].

If you have not yet applied for financial assistance but wish to do so, you should visit the Office of Financial Aid website for more information. If you have any questions, please call (617) 373-4620. Over the next few months, the Office of Financial Aid will send out information to students about how to accept loans and apply for the federal graduate PLUS loan.

REGISTRATION

All first-year students will be automatically registered for classes by the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. In August, you will receive communications detailing information about the first-year curriculum, course assignments and orientation schedule.

TUITION, FEES AND DEPOSIT INFORMATION

Tuition at the School of Law for the 2017–2018 academic year is $49,224. The tuition is billed over two semesters and is due in August and December. Your $500 tuition deposit will be applied to your first tuition bill.

Students who are unable to provide proof of health insurance coverage are required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to be covered

under the university’s health insurance. The 2017–2018 rate for the university’s health insurance has not been set. You will be billed for insurance in the fall once you receive your first tuition bill; this fee may be waived upon proof of coverage through the waiver available on the myNEU portal under the self-service tab.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND MBTA PASSES

The easiest and most efficient way to access campus is via public transportation. The law school is convenient to a number of different transportation modes, including bus, subway and commuter rail. Other students walk or ride their bicycles to campus. The subway in Boston is known as the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority), or the “T” for short. The MBTA website features extensive maps, schedules and even a trip planner that can determine the best route for you. For reference, the closest subway stops to campus are the Northeastern University stop on the Green “E” (Heath Street) line and the Ruggles stop on the Orange line. Bus stops within a few blocks (on both Huntington and Massachusetts Avenues) also provide easy access to a number of bus lines.

If you will be commuting via subway, bus or commuter rail, Northeastern offers an MBTA Semester Pass program that allows you to save about 10 percent off of the normal rate for a semester-long pass. The deadline to buy a fall semester pass is typically the last week in July;

the deadline for the spring semester pass is typically very early in December. If you miss either deadline, you can purchase regular, monthly passes directly from the MBTA. The semester passes will be on sale through the NUPay tab on your myNEU portal during July and December. For more information about the MBTA pass program and/or to purchase a pass, visit myNEU or the Off Campus Student Services website transportation page.

PARKING

There is a limited amount of university-managed parking near the law school; a parking permit (decal) is required to use these lots. You can purchase a parking permit on a semester/quarter basis via myNEU self-service. More information on purchasing a parking permit is available here. In 2016–2017 (the 2017–2018 fee has not yet been set), a parking permit for a first-year law student (enabling parking from 7 am to 11 pm) cost $500 per semester; overnight parking cost $1,155 per semester. If you are interested, you should purchase your permit before the beginning of the school year. Permits are typically available for purchase on myNEU in mid-August.
