What’s a UNIT @ MJC?

A unit refers to the number of hours a college class meets each week. (In high school this is called “credits.”)

The average college course is worth 3 units3 UNITS = 3 WEEKLY HOURS OF CLASS5 UNIT COURSE = MEETS 5 HOURS EACH WEEK

Full-time student must take 12 units (or more)

The maximum number of units you can take in a semester is 18 units unless you petition, and are approved, to take more.

What is the right number of units to take?

The number of class hours is NOT the only thing to consider. In college you also must add in STUDY HOURS.

Those are figured by multiplying your number of units by 2.

If you take 12 units (which equals 12 class hours each week)

To decide how many units you can successfully take you must ask yourself how many study hours you can realistically find in your weekly schedule. Remember, each 3 unit class requires 3 hours in class plus 6 study hours each week, for a total of 9 hours.

If you work or have other time-consuming obligations, use the next chart to help you decide how many units you can successfully handle.

How do I know which classes match my skill level?

You don’t want to take classes that are too difficult for you and that would likely lead to failure.

You also don’t want to waste your time taking classes that are below your skill level and adding unnecessary additional semesters.

One good way to determine which classes match your current skill level is by using your ASSESSMENT SCORES as a guide.

Your assessments scores not only place you in the appropriate levels for ENGLISH, READING, AND MATH, but they also give counselors important information about other courses that would be appropriate for you.

Some Considerations…

If you believe one or more of your placements are INACCURATE you may retest one time. Students occasionally do this if they believe they could place higher. If you would feel more comfortable starting at a lower level than you placed, you may voluntarily register for a lower level class (without retesting) but you will need to register for this class on your registration appointment day in person at Enrollment Services.

If you have AP credit for English or Math (or other courses) you should send those scores to Enrollment Services. Refer to the AP chart in the MJC Catalog.

If you need ESL classes, take the ESL placement test to learn which ESL classes are for you. A placement in ENGL 49 does not necessarily mean you are ready for ENGL 49 if you do not know the English language well.

How do I know what courses are right for my goals?

MJC offers: Variety of Majors Different Degrees and 3 Different General Education PatternsTHE RIGHT ONES FOR YOU WILL DEPEND ON YOUR EDUCATIONAL AND CAREER GOALSTHESE ARE DIFFERENT FOR EVERY STUDENT

Include a Guidance course your first semester at MJC for advice on choosing the right major, degree, and general education pattern for your goals. You will also create a full Educational Plan in the course.

Next slides: suggested classes that are good choices for new students to take early on because most will meet a General Education or College Requirement or provide necessary skills for college success.
