William Gardner, former of Fine's Creek Memorial Baptist, dies CANTON - The Rev. 3 Mary Arterburn Gardner; daugh- Nathan Gardner, 77, of Route 3, Lake Logan Road, died Thursday, A£I129, in an Asheville hospital. native of Boyd, Ala., he graduated from the University of Alabama and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., in 1942. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served at Great Lakes Naval Training Station and Terminal Island Air Station, San Pedro, Calif. He also served on the USS Boston during World War II. In 1946 he began ministering to the First Baptist Church of Hol- lywood, Fla., where he served for 21 years. He also initiated six addi- tional churches in the South Flori- da area. In 1971 he semi-retired and moved to Western North Car- olina where he served as minister of Fine's Creek Memorial Baptist Church. During his retirement, he restored native log cabins. He is survived by his wife, ter, Gaye G. Moore of Canton; two sons, the Rev. Simmons Sledge Gardner of Bethesda, Md., and William W. Gardner of Canton; sis- ter, Dolly Aldredge of Bradenton, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sun- day at Fine's Creek Memorial Baptist Church where he was a member. The Rev. Dr. Susan R. Andrews and Commander Carroll Varner will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with mili- tary graveside rites conducted by Canton V.F.w. Post 5198. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home, Waynesville, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before services.
