President’s Message

Greetings from Wilcox! Hi all! Were you able to get to the State Fair and view the beautiful quilts? Did you sign up to white glove? My friends and I did and it sure is a good way to see the quilts up close. And you get to interact with the public and educate them about quilting. Many don’t have knowledge about quilts and quilters and we have the opportunity to teach them. I took 3 quilts to the State Fair and was happy to win a ribbon. I don’t enter quilts at the fair to get a ribbon. I enter so there is a quilt show. Nebraska is blessed with many extraordinary quilters who put many hours and skill into their quilts and it shows! They blow me away with their talent! Many people tell me that they don’t enter the State Fair because their quilts are “not good enough”. That is not a good reason to me. As I looked around at the quilts, there were quilts of all stages of skill. If the quilts were all drop-dead gorgeous then the average quilter would look at the show and not be inspired, saying “I could never do that.” But if there are average quilts there, then beginners might say, “I think I could do that!” So take your quilt to the fair and don’t be afraid of the judges. Usually they make comments about issues that you already know about. On another note, Congrats to Jill Vanderboegh from Auburn on winning the NSQG raffle quilt at our convention in July! She attended the convention so we got to give it to her there and then. It is way more exciting when the winner is present! (She is our incoming Vice-President for NSQG) So if I couldn’t win it, I am happy Jill did!LeeAnn MedunaNSQG President 2019

Friends of the IQM are grateful for all the individuals and Quilt Guilds that have been so generous in their support of the IQM on Give To Lincoln Day. GTLD is a great time for anyone to donate to the IQM because all donations receive a proportional match from the Lin-coln Community Foundation. This year we received $10,002.13 in donations. This generosity allows IQM to continue providing amazing exhibits and programming for all ages. This past year over 4000 fourth graders vis-ited the museum. The students were insightful and cre-ative in their ideas. This program will be continued with the generous support of donors. We especially want to

recognize the Quilt Guilds across the state that have made donations. New Views: ShapeshiftersSeptember 27, 2019 to March 29, 2020

Shapeshifters inaugurates the “New Views” series in which quilts collected over the last 20 years will be exhibited at the museum for the first time. Made between 1830 and 1930, the cotton and wool quilts in Shapeshifters rely primarily on appliqué for their lively effects. Different approaches to drawing and layering demonstrate inventive uses of form and fabric, the animation of negative space, the deployment of various types of symmetry (translation, reflection, rotation, etc.), and ultimately, the features that make a particular design or quilt “original” instead of conventional. Examples include quilts made from wool as well as cotton, embroidered pieces, and several quilts with unusual and delightful depictions of the animal kingdom.

The Story Quilts of Rumi O’BrienOctober 2, 2019 to April 12, 2020

A trained watercolorist and the daughter of seminal manga (comic book) artist Katsuji Matsumoto, Rumi O’Brien approaches every aspect of her life with an artistic sensibility, from garden design to clothing construction. But it is when she creates her highly imaginative quilts that she is peerless, exceptional, unique. Her quilts are personal narratives, depicting her own stories or fantasies impeccably conceived and exquisitely executed. Best known in the vicinity of Madison, Wisconsin, where she has made her home for more than a half century, Rumi’s work transcends narrow definitions and limited locales. Its roots and branches are simultaneously absolutely Japanese and absolutely American, just like her name.

Diana Harrison: Traces in ClothNovember 1, 2019 to April 26, 2020

UK artist Diana Harrison manipulates found items with a variety of techniques that transform them. The fabric, patchwork and quilts in Traces in Cloth retain a visual ‘trace’ of their original state, but are modified by stitching, dyeing, shrinking, bleaching, and printing. The end result is a new textile, with a tactile appeal heightened by a lack of color and an emphasis on the stitched line. Harrison is a senior lecturer in textiles at the University for the Creative Arts, School of Crafts and Design, Farnham.

Hall of Fame Winner Letter..........................................contiuedcongratulations the night of the event and to others who sent me email messages and cards. Further thanks goes out to the organization for es-tablishing this Hall of Fame in 1986, and for all that NSQG does to promote the love of quilting. I wouldn’t be the quilter I am today if I hadn’t joined in 1992. Through their promotion of education, inspiration, and fellowship I have enhanced my life beyond measure. I started quilting in March of 1990, although I had been a seamstress since the age of 8. After a career of an elementary teacher and owner of a bridal shop, my sister-in-law, Ginny Beck, was concerned how I might fill my time. She took me to my first quilt class in Elkhorn, Iowa on a cold March day. Then in the summer of 1992 Ginny suggested we attend a state convention of quilters. Lorraine Peterson of Blair had told her a little about it. She and I discussed just going to Lincoln for an afternoon, but ended up going for the three days. QNE 1992 was held on the University of Nebraska campus. Katie Wilson was the Chairman. We took classes, whatever was available as we registered late. We came home declaring to our husbands that we had the best time of our lives. During the business meeting I was designing the challenge quilt that Ginny and I would make for the next year in my head. That was just the start of my involvement in an organization I value so highly and for which I have spent lots of hours volunteering for various committees and leadership roles. The classes offered each year have expanded my abilities. Seeing what others make has provided inspiration. The friendships made are outstand-ing. Some I refer to as “my once a year” friends. I see them only at Quilt Ne-braska, yet conversations pick up from where we left off. When someone is missing from convention, there is an emptiness. It’s just an amazing group! I am so happy to be a part of it! For all these reasons I wanted to express my gratitude to each member and the organization as a whole for all that past 27 years have meant to me. This newest award will be cherished forever!Janice Lippincott
