Due to COVID19 protocols, we have adapted to a new way of working with our arrival and departure arrangements with the children in our Prep and Year 1 grades. We have been extremely appreciative of the cooperative manner in which parents, staff and students have adopted so cooperatively with these changes. We are making the following adjustments in Term 4 to these arrangements, due to the maturity students have shown and the need to maximise face to face teaching time; Arrivals: Prep students will now walk directly up to their classrooms in the morning from 8:30. There will still be staff at the front of the school to support students who need assistance but classroom teachers will be waiting for the students up at their classrooms. Departure: Prep students will now depart school at 2:45pm (teachers will continue to walk the students to the front gate for pick up). Year 1 students will now depart school at 3pm. We thank you for your continued support of the protocols that have been in place to safeguard the health and safety of our entire school community. Prep Pirate Day For a number of years prep students have enjoyed a pirate dress up day. This year the tradition continues! Pictured are our 2020 prep students with staff dressed up as pirates. Some great costumes everyone and a great way to finish the term! Year 6 Camp Our Year 6 students attended a very successful school camp to Currumundi last week. Students are to be commended on the amazing behaviour and cooperation they displayed throughout the 3 day camp. Students, thank you for being such great ambassadors for the school! We are always extremely appreciative of the amazing lengths that our staff go to in order to ensure that the students have a great experience. To all staff involved with this year’s camp, thank you! Kawungan Book Week Kawungan’s book week was held throughout this week. A huge thank you to Mrs Murphy and Mrs Staunton for the amazing efforts that they put into generating activities and displays for the students. There is an outstanding display of work that classes have produced based on books that they have read throughout the week.

School Swimming Next term will no doubt be another busy time for students, families and staff with a range of activities and events already planned. A reminder that one of these events is the school swimming program. If you have not yet paid for next term swimming, can I please ask that you do this by close of business tomorrow? Another Successful Father’s Day Stall A huge thank you to everyone for the support shown towards this year’s Father’s Day stall. Once again the P&C did an outstanding job of providing our students with a rich array of presents to buy for Dads. I hope all Dads had a great day and enjoyed the efforts of the children in choosing something to spoil them with. Our Winning House Our Magpie House were the winners for Term 3. These lucky students will take part in a variety of great outdoor activities on the last day of school. Dunga Derby Visit Tomorrow we will have the privilege of being visited by a number of cars involved in this years’ Dunga Derby. This will be a great opportunity for our students to support this great community event. We are encouraging students to bring a gold coin donation and dress for the day in the theme of traffic lights! End of Term As we close in on the end of another school term, I would like to thank the students and staff for all their hard work throughout the last 10 weeks. I hope everyone enjoys the 2 week holiday break and recharge batteries for the final term of 2020. A reminder that school resumes on Tuesday 6th October due the public holiday on Monday 5th October. Mark Jones PRINCIPAL

P&C NEWS What a great end to Term 3 we have had! Have you managed yet to catch a glimpse from the fence or spot the Facebook post with Kawungan’s new concrete stencilling? If not, check them out. They look amazing! We are so happy to have helped support the school with these beautiful and rewarding additions.

Tuckshop BREAKING NEWS! The tuckshop will be open this

Friday (last day of school)! This is something new we are hoping to continue as we know how many families treat their child(ren) to tuckshop of a Friday or last day of term. Because of this though,

please note the Tuckshop will be closed on the first Tuesday back next term for stocktake/Term 4 preparation (the Monday being a public holiday). Normally though, tuckshop is open Tuesdays through to Fridays, and will continue with their current ordering procedures. Students are still able to drop orders and money to the tuckshop in a brown paper bag before school, or parents who wish to pay by EFTPOS, or have any queries, please phone Danielle at the tuckshop directly on 4197 9134. Thank you for your support. Our tuckshop relies on the generosity of volunteers to make it a success, but each year unfortunately, we lose some of our dedicated helpers due to children moving to high school or parents going back to work. We would love to make the load lighter on all by creating a roster that enables everyone to contribute in any way they can. To do this we need as many helpers as we can get – mums, dads, grandparents – everyone is welcome. If you are able to spare a few hours on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to help in the tuckshop, even just once, please send us an email at:

[email protected] Did you know that tuckshop volunteers get a free lunch plus tea and coffee? It’s also always so warming to see your child's face when they see you at the tuckshop window. Thank you so very much to our current dedicated team of tuckshop volunteers that turn up week in, week out to help our Tuckshop convenors and students. We could not do it without you. The Uniform Shop The Uniform Shop is still continuing to open as a pop up only, on the grassed area at the front of the school, Monday and Friday mornings 8.15am - 9.15am. Our team of volunteers will take your order and then deliver the order to your child’s classroom. Yay! Skorts are back in stock and are $30/pair. Correct amounts in cash are preferred or EFTPOS is available. If you have any enquiries please email [email protected].

Father’s Day Our Father’s Day initiatives were a huge success! We had two very happy raffle winners out of so many entries and we’ve never had as many shoppers at our Father’s Day stall before! Thank you for so strongly supporting us in these ventures. We hope all the Kawungan Dads and special people had a great day. An extra special thank you to all who helped us over that week too – things ran much smoother with your assistance. Picture Products Thank you to all who have handed in their new templates. Our bundle of creative goodness can now be sent again this Friday. We can’t wait to get these masterpieces back in Term 4. Craft Supplies We are kindly seeking and are ready to receive donations of all things craft. If you have any spare ribbons, papers, beads, anything, we would love to be able to utilise them. All donations will be put to worthy causes and shared as needed between Chaplain and Guidance Officer programs as well as the P&C. Donations are welcome at the uniform tent or at the office. Containers for Change

Thank you to those who have supported us already with your container donations – every container counts! Anyone wanting to further support our KSS community can do so by donating their bottles and/or cans to any

recycling centre and quoting our code C10049765. Thank you for your extra support with this. Thank you all for another wonderful Kawungan term. We wish you a very safe and happy fortnight of holidays. Enjoy!

Spotlight on 6N ……. This term, 6N celebrated Science Week in style. Mr Muller & Miss Parker from USC conducted a circuit workshop with 6N. We learned how to turn a light on and change its colour using a breadboard circuit and coding. 6N also taught their Prep Buddies how to create dancing drawings and the science behind it.

MUSIC NEWS Music Awards Night Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Annual Music Awards Night at the Brolga Theatre will not go ahead. Instead, we will be holding three music nights at school, so as to minimise the number of people in the audience. Each ensemble will get their own performance night. It does mean some families may need to come to more than one night but each concert should only last between 20-30 minutes. Trophies will be presented at each night for outstanding music students. Students will need to wear their music uniform. If you have any problems with this contact Mr Gillard as soon as possible. There will be no charge for these concerts. Dates for Concerts Week 5 Monday, November 2 6:30pm – Senior Choir Night Week 6 Tuesday, November 10 6:30pm – String Night for both String Orchestra and Beginners Strings Week 7 Monday, November 16 6:30pm – Concert Band Night Senior Choir UPDATE Senior Choir will return to before school rehearsals next term for 4 weeks only. They will rehearse at 8am in the PLA/CLA at the back of the library, which is a larger space than the music room. Senior Choir will rehearse on Thursday October 8,15, 22 and 29. On the day of their concert they will rehearse during school time. After their concert there will be no more Senior Choir for the rest of the year.

GARDEN CLUB Term 3 Garden Club News

Kawungan Garden Club kids kicked off the term by adding soil conditioner purchased from Toowoomba to enrich the soil ready for planting. We have planted wonderful climbing purple beans in tepees plus chives (thanks to Mrs Buturlin’s seedling donations). Our sugar snap peas have produced a sweet bounty, healthy dill, plumb radishes, lush silverbeet and red cabbage and the highlight was

our first harvest of passionfruit from the vine planted over 18 months ago. Passionfruit cheesecake and vanilla slice with passionfruit icing and edible flowers was one of our cooking sessions. We have also made Asian stirfry with plenty of veg from the garden as well as our most recent cook of silverbeet and noodle slice and salads. A huge thanks goes to Mrs Feldman who gives up her time to be a volunteer with our cooking. It is worth noting some of the students did not know what a tea towel was, how to dry up or are still very much developing knife skills. Take the opportunity to get cooking in the kitchen these holidays to help fine tune these life skills.

This week we finished off with a Waste and Recycling trailer visit from the Fraser Coast Council. Thank you goes to Smriti from the Council and Rheanon from QMulching. Students learnt about the importance of what can and can’t be recycled and the importance of composting. We learnt that the recycling

triangle with numbers 1-6 are able to be processed on the Fraser Coast. Did you know you can recycle soft squishy plastic packaging from groceries (including clean snaplock bags) by taking them to Coles or Woolies soft plastic bins? Not many children knew about this! All attending children received free incentive prizes to help make better choices for the environment (including the Year 1 students who attended a similar presentation).

CHAPPY CHAT

Good morning all. Can you believe it, we made it to week 10! Yay. I trust you will all have an amazing holiday and a well-deserved break. Just don’t forget to come back.

Needing something to do in the Holiday? Why not pack a shoe box? Operation Christmas Child is an international project run by Samaritan's Purse which encourages people to pack a shoe box full of goodies which then gets sent to children throughout the world who may never have received a gift before. Why not join in on this worthy cause? For more info jump onto their website operationchristmaschild.org.au or come and see me for a brochure and a box. The boxes need to be returned to me by the end of October. Shoes, Shoes and more shoes. Here at Kawungan

we have a shoe bank. We have spare shoes for those who don’t have any. We are currently out of small sizes.

If you find any on sale or at a reasonable price and would like to donate to our shoe bank, I would be most grateful as would the students who need them. Thank you

During Term 4 I will be running an emotional development program called My Life Rulz as well as Shine Girl, a program on Worth, Strength and Purpose. I’m trusting many students will benefit from these two programs.

Enjoy your rest and do something amazing this holidays. Chappy M
