From the President by Tom Latham

Autumn is synonymous with free access, less traffic, and high winds. It is also when all my spare time is dedicated to other commitments. Unfortunately, this means little to no time to dedicate to windsurfing, let alone the NJWWA. What I was once passionate about 6 years ago has gotten lower on the priority list. The New Jersey Windsurfing & Watersports Association has a great core group on their Board of Trustees as well as several great appointed Chairpersons in our ranks. The Board of Directors is elected every 2 years, and includes President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. While the club can practically run itself, we need passionate leaders who can steer us in the right direction. I encourage all of our members and sponsors to nominate some new people onto the Board of Directors. Who do you see rigging next to you at your launchsite? Who's the last one on the water? Who are you sharing advice with? There are plenty of regulars out there who may just need your encouragement to step into a position in the NJWWA. Help take the New Jersey Windsurfing & Watersports Association to its next chapter.

Club News Elections

By Brian Rauch

The bylaws of our Club (NJWWA) stipulate bi-yearly elections for Board members. Just a bit of history, Wallace DePron served as our first President followed by Tom Latham. Tom has served three (3) consecutive terms and all would agree that he has added mightily to the Club's mission and success. There is nothing holding back continued office-holdings as there is not any term limits here. Pretty much if someone is sufficiently masochistic to continue in their respective role the rest of us Club members are more than happy to allow them "to it". However this formality (elections) needs to be addressed and this is the time. I have volunteered myself to move the process along, I am not running for any office so would seem unbiased, and in truthfulness, will act in an unbiased manner. So, the first step is nominating those for offices. I know Bill De Stefano has graciously accepted to maintain his role as Club treasurer, as long as nobody wishes to usurp this role (and I know there would be no arguments from Bill!). To nominate just send me an email to my personal account (Brian Rauch): [email protected], in subject line note that this is a nomination. In the body of the text, please indicate the office and name of the person you are nominating. Ideally, if you also have the email address of the person you are nominating that would make it easier to confirm that they are accepting. Those that wish to submit for any office must be a Club member with membership in good standing. Given this nominations can come from others or from the prospective candidate themselves. The timeline for nominations will be until the end of November. At that time those who "agree" will be added to a formal ballot and some type of voting will occur, still to be determined, but just be aware that the process will be Club members only - one vote per email address.

NJWWA Fun Fest @ Lakes Bay, West Atlantic City.

Sunday August 7th 2016

By Tom Latham (Photographs: Ken Chen and Eileen Pfaffman)

We had arrived at Lakes Bay to a private SUP lesson wrapping up. We really only needed to rig up our own personal equipment as Extreme Windsurfing opened up their equipment garage for us to use. Kayaks unchained, SUP's to the beach, and windsurfers to the water’s edge.

Our sponsors certainly make running these Fun Fests easy, and Extreme Windsurfing is no exception. Jim Karabasz is a seasoned sailor, windsurfer, and SUPer; both on the bay

and in the ocean. Everything we needed was on site, rigged and ready, from beginner to expert.

The first wave of beginners received some on-the-deck simulator instruction before heading out to the awaiting volunteer instructors on the water

.

The light WNW 10mph breeze provided a side/off-shore wind, requiring tethers to keep everyone from drifting away. Soon enough, we had groups taking turns with both the land simulator, and SUP instruction. Lakes Bay was a flurry of activity with windsurfers and paddlers of all ages.

Lunch was at your own leisure, with Extreme Eats serving up some fine beach cuisine.

Our newfound athletes among us were soon challenged with a windsurfing course race. Heading out, then tacking around the up wind buoy, and returning to the beach to capture the flag. Mike Pinto sr. showed Mike Pinto Jr. how it’s done by beating him to the finish.

Beach Clean Up at Seaside Park.

Saturday October 21st 2016

By Allen Schultz (Photographs: Suzanne Schultz)

Despite the inclement weather, the Beach Sweep at Seaside Park, coordinated by Clean Ocean Action and in which NJWWA members participated, went ahead as planned. Although the weather gradually improved throughout the day, most of the morning was raining and very windy. Since the time ran from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the worst weather of the day was during the clean-up. When the rain was coming down heavy, we waited it out in the van. Despite all this, we did manage to clean the area reasonably well. We were, however, unable to devote much time to the Seaside Park beach north of the flats, or along the water's edge. There were a handful of people sailing who pitched in as weather permitted. Hopefully the weather will be  more  cooperative  for  next  year’s  cleanup.

A beginner’s guide to windsurfing in the NJ ocean. By Brad Miley (Photographs: Mary Sherrer)

I love windsurfing in the NJ ocean: being propelled by a combination of wind and waves and sometimes the waves only; getting jumps off of 2 or 3 waves in a row; then jibing on  the  next  one,  and  then  riding  it  in…love  it! Before you get started, let's go over the "pre-flight" check list. A lot of this is ultimately about safety. Skills Needed: You must be very solid in the footstraps, harness, very good at all types of water starts and able to jibe ok. You gotta be in good shape too. Equipment: You should have a wave-rated mast (skinnies are the strongest ones), seal the joint with tape or a gasket to keep the sand out and make sure that at least the top section is plugged watertight. Sails should be made tough and not have cams or tube battens. Start with freeride boards of about 100 to 130 liters (later you'll go smaller). Use a 30 to 33 cm freeride fin not a wave or weed fin (too weak upwind). Check ALL your lines for wear and carry 6 to 8 ft. of extra. Check your U joint. Have an uphaul. Wear color; dress warmer than for the bay; a seat harness is fine if that's all you have; helmet and life jacket are cool if you want. Sailing barefoot is as well. Conditions: First off, sail with others for more fun and safety. Pick out a good landmark before heading out. Think about where you'll drift if underpowered or wiped out (stay away from rocks and jetties). Watch out for boats and also any dragging fishing lines.

Don't try to sail through shore break waves, even small shore break can hurt you and your nice gear. Look for side shore winds at 14 to 20 mph and waves less then 3 feet to get started. Cold water and warm air can make heavy fog and patchy wind so wait till late May. We don't really get thermals in the ocean so be aware of that when looking at forecasts.

Getting out is really the BIG deal. Try to figure out if the waves are coming in sets. If they are, you'll want to try to slip out through the little ones. When ready, grab your front footstrap with your upwind hand; the boom with the other hand and point the board towards the water (don't back into the ocean). Walk out keeping the board and sail above the water. You can put your board in as soon as the fin will clear (12" to18" of water). With one hand on the mast and one on the boom, keep walking until you're in 2 ft of water. Again, keep the sail out of the water, and the board pointed at the oncoming waves. This may take some practice! Beach start up onto the board and with knees slightly bent start sailing out. Do not hook in or get in the footstraps. Adjust your speed up or down so as to not end up right in front of breaking waves or if you can go downwind to go around them. Attack the white water head on and poke your board right through it (you'll go over the little ones). As you crest waves, you'll need to slightly un-sheet so as to not be pulled over the front.

Getting out over the shore break

10

When you wipe out, stay cool, get to your rig and try to get your sail flying as fast as you can. Water start and sail whichever way your board is pointed (in or out). If you just lose your sail and it's faster to uphaul, then do that. Do whatever is fastest. Once out, keep it on a plane and don't drift downwind. Staying on plane can be tricky at first. Keep in mind that you are sailing "uphill" at times so you may need to bear off just a bit on those "up hills" and make it up on the downhills. Unless you plan to come in, stay out well beyond the breaking shore waves when you first start. Look at the swells, try riding them on the way in and jumping on the way out. Try jibing on them in both directions.

When it is time to head in, get on a swell and surf it in but stay away from the steep breaking section (look over your shoulder a lot to watch the wave). You may have to go across the wave like a surfer to stay clear. Keep your sail powered up and head in. If a swell comes up behind you, lean forward a bit to compensate for the acceleration, otherwise your board may surf out from under you. Just before your fin touches, move your front hand forward on the boom, and while keeping your sail high, step off to windward, grab a back footstrap with your back hand, push the board's nose onto the beach and walk past the nose while turning the board and yourself 180 degrees to face the ocean. Pull up onto the beach and take a break.

There are more things to learn as you go into bigger conditions but this should get you started. See ya out there. p.s. Traditionally the new guy brings fried chicken and pizza to the beach with two 16 oz iced teas (Sandy likes her with lemon)…i'm  just  saying.

Windsurfers at Bayview Park are the BEST! or how to laugh through a broken ankle. By Eileen Pfaffman

(Photographs: Alasdair and Corinne GIlfillan)

Monday Oct 24, 2016: I was windsurfing with Thermal Bob in Bayview Park, LB Township. Bob went out past High Island and I elected to stay in the cove. Unfortunately, my fin planted in an unexpectedly shallow spot and I fell on my right foot with all my weight and considerable momentum. First good luck: NO pain.

11

My 7 mm high top bootie along with a 4.3 Body Glove wetsuit held my ankle in place. I took off my harness, looped it on a foot strap, leaned on board and began to float. I was able to use the uninvolved foot to propel along the bottom. I floated from the front of the kiddie beach to where we derig on the Watersports side. When I arrived at the Watersports side of beach where we traditionally launch, I sat in the water and derigged. Using the seaweed-laden boom for a crutch, I hopped up and placed all my gear on the end of deck. My Fanatic Shark has a very nice "handle" for the fin screw so the fin was easy to remove. I pushed the board above the high tide line, grabbed my rolled up sail and started a slow, sandy crawl on hands and knees towards my van. This had to look very funny. Thermal was too far out to realize my dilemma. He keeps requesting a reenactment. Second good luck: made it to launch site with all my gear, No pain and no derigging problems. A very nice couple saw me crawling across the exit lane. I was laughing very hard thinking about what a sight - a gray haired grandmother in a wet suit crawling on hands and knees fiercely clutching a 4.9 North sail. The lady carried all my gear to the van and insisted on calling 911. She did not seem to trust that I would call myself. Maybe it was the laughing. An EMT arrived instantaneously. Two very professional and thoughtful LB Township Police Officers arrived and had me lean on the wooden barrier at Joni's designated parking spot. The very kind officers loaded all my gear and cooler, shoes etc. into car. The Officers retrieved my clothes and my cell phone for the ride to the hospital. Lorrie Gavenda, Dave Cylinder's wife, had been driving on the boulevard behind the police cars. She saw the officers speaking to me and an ambulance behind her. Lorrie knew Dave was sailing elsewhere and she alerted Corinne that there was trouble AFOOT at Bayview. Third, fourth, fifth. sixth.. endless good luck...too many to count: My gear is saved...surrounded by professionals and Windsurfers - the best friends anyone could hope for. Still no pain. Neoprene holding ankle in place. Corinne called me before I made it onto the ambulance stretcher in Bayview's Parking lot. What an amazing, caring woman. I am privileged to know her. The ambulance ride was my first and livelier than expected. When the driver heard I crashed windsurfing she cheerily called out - Oh you know the Ukrainians who sail in crazy winter weather! The driver was actually a neighbor of Mik and Vadim. The EMT got a little nervous when I gave Thermal's Great Day Windsurfing hand signs. Windsurfing is a unique and wonderful world.

Back at Bayview: Thermal Bob sails to the launch site. He feels something is not quite right when he notices my gear packed. I usually hang at beach till everyone has exited the water in colder weather. He checked his phone and a friend had left a message mentioning an ambulance at Bayview. Thermal started to realize it was me. Corinne met me at hospital and called Thermal who also drove to hospital. Corinne stayed with me for many hours. She was there when they cut me out of my 4.3 Body Glove Wetsuit. My winter booties and bathing suit were saved. Thermal and Alasdair visited. More good luck.... a Podiatrist/ankle specialist surgeon was ready to operate on my ankle at 7PM. It turned out that my ankle was broken in three places, both sides and back and was also dislocated. The hospital personnel told me that the dislocation was the reason I had no pain. There are plates and screws and wires everywhere. Most importantly for recovery there was NO tendon or ligament involvement. I liked Dr. Baskin. I had overnight surgery so I had no sense that I had a hospital stay. Dr. Baskin was very happy with the outcome. He told me I can expect to be windsurfing by April with my ankle returned to 98%. But: first no walking or driving for 10 weeks. After being discharged that day after surgery, Corinne and Alasdair hauled me to their first floor rental for a fabulous, party filled week. Thermal Bob went to the drug store to collect my prescriptions.

Corinne and Alasdair created amazing dinners with fresh vegetables from Alasdair’s successful garden. Corinne prepared her special hot sauce from the home-grown chilies as an accompaniment for those who like their food spicy. Thermal cooked an authentic Polish Kielbasa dinner. So many windsurfers emailed and visited: too many to mention in this brief account. Many thanks to Diane, who actually brought me a walker. She sacrificed her dog Jai's squeaky toy balls to put on the feet of the walker. I was able to thank Lorrie Gavenda in person and we enjoyed Dave's freshly ground horseradish at one of Corinne's amazing meals. We had lively, intelligent conversations at these meals. Tales of broken bones and gear were plentiful. We took photos of my progress along the way. They called my inhalation device a bong. Lots of laughs.

Special thanks to Corinne and Alasdair. They insisted that I eat 3 meals a day and they let me stay in their beautiful first floor rental. With Thermal, they collected personal items and food from my upstairs rental. Corinne and Alasdair kept me company an entire week waiting for the first after-surgery visit. Corinne took me to the surgeon's first visit and waited with me for hours. I don't know how to thank them for all their help. Also, many thanks to Thermal Bob for picking up my medication and my personal belongings, and for the great company during the week.

WhatsApp Group NJWWA – An easy win. We use it.

By Cosme Pousset What is WhatsApp? For   those   new   to   “WhatsApp”   (www.whatsapp.com): with more than 1 billion users worldwide, it is the number 1 messenger App on both the Android and iPhone platforms (works with windows phones too). Constraints? Almost none: the App is free, but, per definition only smartphones owners can use it. Note: there is a Windows version of WhatsApp but it works only if your smartphone is online / connected too – unfortunately. Last but not least: the App is very user friendly and powerful at the same time. Groups can be easily created and administered. The communication is simple and immediate: you can post texts, voice recordings, photos, videos, documents, and links from your cell to the group within seconds. What can we use it for? We have decided to try to set  up  a  “Windsurfing  NJ  Group”  initially  to  …

Communicate who is planning to go windsurfing where? / when?…  because  we  enjoy   to  windsurf  together and sometimes it brings the extra motivation when it's rainy and cold outside ...

For   those   who   “just”   reached   the   spot   and   if   a  group user asks for it: hoping somebody would briefly describe the water / weather conditions …  few  seconds  needed  to  post  something  like  "15  kn / SW / constant / flat" and/or make a photo and post it immediately. Better than the weather stations around which are not always representative depending on their exact location, the wind direction etc...

Thinking especially of the most "used" spots e.g. Sandy Hook, Seaside Park and LBI.

I   hope   it   will   be   extended   next   year   to   “Special  Interests  Groups”   like  “Ocean  Windsurfing”  (not  only the bay) where people could gather and meet “short   term   notice”   based   on   weather   and   water  conditions

- These are examples only and everything is optional meaning: each Group user decides how much he shares, participates, reads etc – Examples: Recent group activity We have a few users but it has already been quite useful and nice. In the 2 screenshots below, you will see how the interface looks like and the fact that we are not limited to texts. Over the last days:

Cyrille posted, among others, a short video he made (with his cell) of the people windsurfing in Seaside the weekend before.

A few days later, early morning, he was the first one in Seaside and took 2 photos + a short video which were immediately posted on the group. This was very informative for the windsurfers arriving after him – thanks again Cyrille !

We had Federico, Denis and myself informing each other about when we will meet on the spot.

Once arrived, posted in few words the conditions there on the group. And before the weekend, posted screenshots of the NJ and seaside forecast too.

The Future?

Expecting this group will grow quickly next season. A WhatsApp group holds max 250 users – we have quite some room available...

I hope personally that we could have some “events”  organized  last  minute  – e.g. if a summer weekend turns out windy and warm: why not one evening or few hours in advance propose some finger food and beer for the Windsurf after session / with sunset in the background (?)

Encourage people to sail and discover new spots (ocean or bay) – together – because some of us would be happy to see other places, but would not try on their own. Same as above: propose a meeting point, see how many people are interested and agree or not on meeting point.

For spots like Sandy Hook or Seaside Park: I could imagine myself or anybody (if interest from the community) windsurfing with a GoPro cam or equivalent in the middle of the boards and kites, following  “you”  (if  I  can…)  and  post  it  right  after  in  the WhatsApp group.

and much more? How to join the group

You already have a smartphone and installed WhatsApp? send me ([email protected]) or to an Admin   from   the   group   (Denis,   Alex…)   your   cell  phone number. We will add you to the group. The administration in general will be discussed with NJWWA / very flexible.

You have a smartphone – but did not install WhatsApp same as above once you downloaded the App from iTune or Google Play. WhatsApp will automatically read your contacts and let you know who  is  on  WhatsApp.  Your  “registration”  to  a  group is automatic once an Admin added you (of course, you can create your own group(s) too). And no misunderstanding: no need for an extra username (no password needed)- It is automatically your cell number.

You do not have a smartphone I do not see any simple solution. If any Newsletter reader has an idea, please let us know.

Any comment, correction, suggestion very much welcome! There   are   not   many   “instructions”   around   WhatsApp   but  once the App is downloaded, is pretty much self explanatory. Still: do not hesitate to contact me if you have some questions.

SCREENSHOTS I selected 2 only – even if more discussions available. The first one from the windows application which is very close to the more common cell phone version (see screenshot 2). Screenshot 1 For  the  overall  “look  and  feel”.  I  did  not  include  the  left  panel which shows you all your contacts which are on WhatsApp – your Group(s) too. The attachment icon top right highlighted in yellow (either version: cell or windows): to add easily to the group chat any photo, video, document, voice recording etc.

Screenshot 2 For the video and the photo at the bottom. Just like for the screenshot above: tapping on the attachment would open it full screen on your phone

Special Feature An NJWWA member having fun at an ABK clinic: Poaching an Egg.

By Seth Robins (Photograph: Ned Crossley)

We're all one big happy family, and this became clear when I signed up for an Andy Brandt clinic in Cape Hatteras for October 17th. There were people from Michigan, Lake Erie (New York), Boston, Cape Cod, the "Baba crew" (Baltimore), Raleigh NC, and several of us from the NY area. Many of you know Ned Crossley, an active participant in many NJWWA events and a sailor from the Hudson Valley. He had rented a house for people going to the clinic. I knew that I had gotten way behind in my pursuit of the sport, and I signed up to be in Ned's house. Yes, the clinic was awesome, and I learned a ton about Windsurfing technique; but the "house dynamics" were incredible. The attached photograph is of me learning to poach an egg "Ned's way". Ned is an adjunct professor of Windsurfing with Andy Brandt's camps, and comes to Windsurfing from a career as a gymnastic coach at West Point and a ski instructor at Windham for many years. His exacting precision in windsurfing is applied to instruction in the cooking realm as well. Balance is the word, but balance in windsurfing is as complex as you want to make it. Although we did not have to "balance an egg" in the kitchen, try: boiling water with three capfuls of vinegar, cracking the eggs one by one in a coffee cup, lowering the cup sideways to let the boiling water/vinegar concoction flow into the cup and to set the egg, then gently releasing the egg into the boiling brew.

NJWWA windsurfing trips During late summer, Jeff and Barb Bauer organized a windsurfing trip to Hatteras; an open invitation for which was circulated to club members. It would be great if others take

up this initiative by proposing or even organizing future windsurfing trips to Hatteras and other popular spots in the US and even Caribbean. If you have any suggestions please contact Tom Latham at [email protected].
