From the President

Jeff Bauer, President

([email protected])

As the leaves begin to change and the weather turns cool, I can’t help but appreciate one of the better windsurfing summers we’ve had in recent years. It’s also a time to reflect on whether I was able to reach any of the windsurfing goals I had set for myself back in the spring. While I improved my percentage of successful carving 360’s, I feel sometimes like I’m just going around in circles in my quest to improve my windsurfing abilities.

Recently I had the opportunity to listen to Ned Crossley teach the importance of fundamentals at our Sandy Hook Fun Fest. He spoke of the windsurfing fundamentals of being able to sail clew first, backwind sailing and even fin first sailing. At first these skills may seem unnecessary but upon further examination you realize that these elements are critical in performing basic tacks and jibes as well as all advanced or freestyle maneuvers. As many of you have surely discovered with windsurfing, no matter what level you are at currently, there is always more to learn. If you have the opportunity, put working on fundamentals on you’re to do list, or better yet, attend an ABK camp, WIPA program or NJWWA clinic.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have supported the NJWWA through another year. We held 3 successful Fun Fest events in LBI, Lakes Bay and Sandy Hook and we are still looking forward to the 10

th Annual Gala and 3

rd annual Hatteras

trip. A special thank you shout out to Jim Karabasz of Extreme Windsurfing, Ken and Eileen Hoff of H2 Windsurfing, Ned Crossley, Jack Bushko, Brian Rauch, Jacek Polubiec (JP), Marah Shiels, Tom Latham, Bill DeStefano and others who have put in the time and effort to create these successful events for us.

The windsurfing year is not over yet so get out there and enjoy the fall winds. Hope to see you at the Gala to share some windsurfing stories and have a few laughs with all of you.

10th Annual NJWWA Windsurfing Fun Fest @ Bayview Park, LBI, NJ. Sunday, July 1st 2018.

By Tom Latham

Photos: Jimmy Rivera and Ally Latham

This annual event has evolved into a successfully run and well-attended season opener for beginner instruction on Long Beach Island.

Our own secretary, Jacek Polubiec (JP), coming off his recent WIPA Instructor Certification, gave the beginners their first lesson utilizing a ghost rig and drag board on the beach. After each student got to try some new maneuvers on land, several NJWWA volunteers continued on-the-water instruction with equipment we have all obtained through the years.

We also got to unveil a recent donation to the club from Isthmus Sailboards in Wisconsin. The new RRD 3.0 Kids Rig worked great with a recently donated Mistral Ntrance board. Kids and lightweight adults did great on this new acquisition. The light breeze, and multiple safety ropes, kept everybody at bay.

By afternoon, with yet still a light breeze, the intermediate Jibe Clinic was held on the beach. Jack Bushko was able to offer everything you need to know about jibing. Both novices and experts benefitted from Jack’s wisdom as a master windsurfing instructor. Many took to the water on their largest sails and decorated the seascape accordingly.

NJWWA would like to thank Long Beach Township and the park director, Joni Bakum; the Bayview Park Watersports Vendors, including Island Surf & Sail, Acme Surf & Sport, LBI Surfing, South-End Surf & Paddle; and the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol for overseeing the Bayview Park waterfront. Jack Bushko also deserves special thanks. Finally, thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, Especially JP, for all the efforts as Event Chair, and we welcome more volunteers to help run this event in the future.

We had around 11 participants, including two families and a few couples, at the Lakes Bay Fun Fest. It was a clear and sunny morning and we started off with registration and doughnuts. J.P., Bill and Jimmy started rigging beginner rigs, and Tom got the buoys inflated. Jim arrived soon after and offered more boards. The wind was very light out of the SW; at times glassy but really ideal for beginners as there were minimal waves.

JP started with land instruction on the dock area with a diverse group as some had already been through beginning lessons (but still wanted to stay with JP as it had been years since they had last been on the water).

Around 11:15 a.m. the learners were ready for the water, and all our instructors were ready to teach. We broke up in sets of 3-4; the younger ones with Jimmy and his kid's rig. By now the sun was bright and the humidity increasing but still little wind.

Brian monitored things from the shore then, late morning, picked up pizza and in time for lunch which was served in the gazebo around 1:00 p.m.. By then, the wind shifted around to the SE, but still remained very light. Participants took turns on the rigs and instructors kept their vigilance. One person got pretty far downwind and had to be rescued in the kayak (he took the kayak back and Brian sailed the rig back). Otherwise all went very well.

The "big race" was next: an 'anything goes' covering the course type of race. The wind was still light, approximately 4-8 mph and from S/SE. We had three divisions: beginner windsurf, advanced windsurf and non-windsurf.

At the skippers meeting, the course was explained - two buoys were set up - one on an upwind mark and the other on a downwind mark. Participants had slightly different routes based upon their Division. All got ready and then 'boom' - literally off to the races. Rounding the first mark (upwind) was the most challenging resulting in many teeny collisions and bumping as all participants were gathered in a little nook on the shore. For this course, the two windsurfing divisions were combined but, with the difference in that, the 'advanced' windsurfers division had a slightly longer course than the beginner division. This balanced out the course and made it open for all participants.

In the end it was Carol De Leonardis who came in first - happily crossing the finish line with hands in the air. Winner of the non-windsurf division was Jennifer Zhang. Both winners got the prize of Club membership being extended for one year.

We had closing ceremonies in the gazebo with many smiles ending a day of family, friends, sun and pure enjoyment! Pictures were taken. Carol had a memorable quote, and I paraphrase, as she nosed out our own Tom Latham to round the first mark: "outta my way I'm coming through!!!"

Special thanks to Jimmy (photos and rigging his equipment), Bill (wonderful water instruction, patient and positive with students), JP (terrific land instruction to a diverse group, helping to rig and water tutoring), Tom (water instructions, some 1:1 instruction, helping with logistics - race buoys and life jackets) and lastly Jim of Extreme Windsurfing for hosting this event.

NJWWA Fun Fest Meet Up @ Sandy Hook, NJ. Sunday September 16th 2018

By Jeff Bauer

Photos: Jimmy Rivera

The format for the last Fun Fest of the year was changed a bit to focus more on NJWWA members and less on introducing newbies to the joys and challenges of windsurfing.

To that end, we began the day at 9am on the Sandy Hook beach looking out at 2-3 foot waves, a low incoming tide, light west winds and a sunny 78 degrees. Perfect conditions for SUP wave riding. Jeff Bauer, aka “Big Kahuna”, gave the gathered group of 9 brave souls some quick pointers on safety, tips on getting out through

the break and then how best to position oneself to catch a wave.

The group was anxious to get on the water and so on the water they went. The first attempt out ended with most folks in the water, getting knocked off their boards from the oncoming waves. Wet, but undeterred, the paddlers got back on their boards and all were able to paddle out through the break to position themselves to catch a wave.

Catching waves on a SUP, while not easy, is exhilarating and New Jersey offers really nice conditions. Sandy Hook, Seaside, LBI and points south offer multiple spots to enjoy SUP surfing. All participants seemed to enjoy the session with many waves ridden accompanied by hoots and hollers from their fellow SUP’ers.

Next on the agenda, was the Windsurfing Q&A led by Ned Crossley. Ned delivered a fun and informative hour plus session on windsurfing fundamentals that are critical to master in order to truly improve one’s windsurfing skills.

Sailing clew first, back-winded, and fin first are fundamental skills one should take the time to work on. Once mastered, you will see and feel the difference in your windsurfing skills. It also opens the door to new maneuvers such as the short board fast tack, helicopter tack as well as improved jibes.

Ned is leading the WIPA (Windsurfing Instructors and Programs Association) effort that is actively working to develop qualified and knowledgeable windsurfing instructors throughout the country. For more information on WIPA see below and check out their website https://www.windsurfingipa.org.

Last, but not least on the agenda, was Intro to Foiling. With a building south wind, Ken and Eileen Hoff of H2 Windsurfing, were on hand with 2 foil boards. After an initial overview of foiling that discussed the finer points and adjustments required to get up on the foil. Members got the opportunity to get on the water and give foiling a try.

Unfortunately, the winds were on the lighter side, but several members were able to get the board out of the water and get the sensation of what foiling is all about. Anyone interested in learning to foil should contact H2 Windsurfing at: https://h2windsurfing.com.

Thank you to all who attended the Sandy Hook event and hope you had an enjoyable and informative day. And an extra BIG THANK YOU to Ned Crossley and H2 Windsurfing for donating their time, expertise and equipment in making this such a successful event.

Windsurfing Instructors

and Programs Association

(WIPA)

By Ned Crossley

In May 2018, Windsurfing Instructor and Programs Association (WIPA) was born by the web site publication, www.windsurfingipa.org. WIPA is for all windsurfers nationwide with 40 top windsurfing Instructor Trainers-Examiners (ITEX). Many are ABK based instructors. Built upon windsurfing fundamentals, we all need to try to get level 1 and 2 so that our enjoyment, efficiency, and safety improves. • First register for free as WIPA has no dues or requirements. • Then, buy the Tricktionary 3 Windsurfing Bible. • Lastly, arrange for coaching, instruction, and certification.

In the greater NJ area we have 4 ITEX’s: Ned Crossley, Ken Hoff, Eileen Hoff, and Tom Lepak. All you have to do arrange with them time, dates and fees to get customized lessons and certification. Learn the fundamentals with dry land windsurfing simulation and then apply it to the water drills. Get better in instructing yourself and then share with others. Even if you never teach a lesson, WIPA is good for you. Congratulations to J.P. Polubiec as the first NJ WIPA Level 1 Non Planing Windsurfing Instructor. Ask him about the value of WIPA certification and fundamentals. JP spent two whole days with Coach Ned so he knows the real deal. Go to Ken and Eileen Hoff at www.h2windsurfing.com. Ken and Eileen are the most improved NJ windsurfers overall. They are ABK trained and they have racked up many clinics. They are ready to help you learn and pass WIPA standards.

Page 17: New Jersey Windsurfing and Watersports Association ...

17

If you get WIPA certified, you get an electronic certificate, electronic certification card, and are listed on our permanent lifetime WIPA Certified Windsurfing Instructors. Only you can decide if you are tired being a “wind sufferer” or a “windsurfer!” Get coached and windsurf better. WIPA email is [email protected]. Or call Ned at 914 299 7552.

New Jersey Windsurfing

WhatsApp group

By Tom Latham and Cosme

Pousett In an article in the NJWWA newsletter Vol 8, Issue 3, “WhatsApp Group NJWWA – An easy win. We use it.”, Cosme Pousett described how this app can be used for/to:

Communicate who is planning to go windsurfing where? / when?… because we enjoy to windsurf together and sometimes it brings the extra motivation when it's rainy and cold outside ...

For those who “just” reached the spot and if a group user asks for it: hoping somebody would briefly describe the water / weather conditions … few seconds needed to post

something like "15 kn / SW / constant / flat" and/or make a photo and post it immediately. Better than the weather stations around which are not always representative depending on their exact location, the wind direction etc...

Thinking especially of the most "used" spots e.g. Sandy Hook, Seaside Park and LBI. I hope it will be extended next year to “Special Interests Groups” like “Ocean Windsurfing” (not only the bay) where people could gather and meet “short term notice” based on weather and water conditions”

Currently there's a lot of communication from windsurfers in the Barnegat Bay area. If there is any decent wind that comes up, these guys are texting and hitting the water together. Personally, I leave the setting on silent, and if I happen to see action on the WhatsApp App on my Smartphone, I can read it at my leisure. A true windsurfing fanatic can turn on alerts so his phone dings with every WhatsApp text received. Communication with only NJWWA Windsurfers. NJWWA Membership encouraged. A reminder how to join the group: • You already have a smartphone and installed WhatsApp? send Cosme ([email protected]) or an Admin from the group (Denis, Alex…) your cell phone number. We will add you to the group. The administration in general will be discussed with NJWWA / very flexible. • You have a smartphone – but did not install WhatsApp: same as above once you downloaded the App from iTune or Google Play. WhatsApp will automatically read your contacts and let you know who is on WhatsApp. Your “registration” to a group is automatic once an Admin added you (of course, you can create your own group(s) too). And no misunderstanding: no need for an extra username (no password needed)- It is automatically your cell number.
