WIRELESS CONCEPTS

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication)

Globally accepted standard for digital cellular

communication

A standardization group established in 1982

Operating at 900 MHz

CELL Basic unit of a cellular system Radio coverage is given by one base station Identified by a unique number called Cell Global

Identity

Types of cells

Macro cells

Micro cells

Selective cells

Umbrella cells

Multiple Access Technique used in GSM: Allow several users to share the resources of the air

interface in one cell

INTRODUCTION TO ASSIGNED JOB: My work is linked with generation and analysis of performance

reports.

To analyze the performance of the network I have to generate

reports on daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Different Reports are generated for different networks to

analyze the overall performance of the networks.

Steps are taken to improve the performance on the basis of data

available in reports.

REPORTS USED FOR PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

BUSINESS OBJECT: Integrated query, reporting and analysis solution for business

professionals. Allows you to access the data in your corporate databases

directly from your desktop.

Report building in Business Objects Drag the parameter and counters that you want in the

report as shown. You can view SQL statements for the report you have

crafted by clicking SQL icon on the top. Drag the counters and parameters which you wants to

view from left most window to top of right side window. Apply condition to the values of same parameters in

lower side window. Run the Report by clicking on Run and run the report for

the desired time interval. In this way the reports are generated to analyze the

network, this was the core area of my training.

Some Map Tool often used:

NETWORK ANALAYSIS & OPTIMIZATION

Step 1: Generation of Network Reports

Reports on RACH Success Rate

Reports on Handover Success Rate

Reports on Speech Quality

Reports on Capacity

Reports on Network Stats

CONTD…Step 2: Analysis of the Reports Checking if the various parameters governing network’s

performance called Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are in limits?

Selecting the cells with poor performance including undesired values of KPIs.

Tracking the various reasons responsible for the poor performance of the cells with the network reports as reference.

CONTD…Step 3: Optimization For cells with low signal strength, the remedy should be

the use of Tower Mounted Amplifiers(TMAs). For cells with a bad firing quality on downlink, the

solution is to check the cabling and connectors and to monitor the power feeders.

For cells with a bad quality on uplink, the problem can be excessive Timing advance (TA).

For cells suffering frequency interference, the solution is to change its frequency or of that of the interfering cell.

RF Data management:1. Frequency Planning:

Giving frequencies to the new sites.

Changing the frequencies of the existing sites with the aim of no interference.

2.Neighbour Definition:

Defining the neighbours of the cells, meeting certain requirements.

Add cells as the neighbours of the cell to serve the handed- over calls.

Delete the already defined neighhbours that are not serving as potential neighbours.
