Neil Orchard Senior News September 2018 Jenny Ta ~ Editor
“Nuts About Fall” By Heather Schelske
Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center Supervisor
I don’t want to jinx it, but it looks like summer is finally coming to an end. The weather is
starting to cool down and has been perfect these last few weeks. I couldn’t think of a
better way to wrap up summer than with our annual Summer Days BBQ. The event was
sponsored by Summerset Senior Living with entertainment provided by David Kellogg, a
local Country Western DJ. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the event and
especially to those who got up to dance and play the yard games. I know I say this every
year, but nothing makes me happier than seeing our participants get up and get active.
On August 27th, we went BANANAS for our members in honor of National Banana Lovers Day. All
members who scanned in that morning received a FREE banana split. We even had our very own banana
mascot for participants to pose for pictures with. If you’re not yet a member, quit monkeying around and
sign up! Members receive discounts on senior center special events and classes. If you’re already a
member, make sure you’re scanning in each time you come to the center. You never know when we’ll do
another surprise membership appreciation day.
Just because summer is ending, that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. In fact, we’re only getting started.
This month, we’re celebrating National Cheeseburger Day by throwing a BBQ! On September 19 th, stop
by for a sizzling cheeseburger with all the fixings. As Wimpy from the cartoon Popeye would say, “I will
gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Just make sure you get your tickets before prices
increase. See inside for more details.
Don’t be late for our very important date. Our annual Mad Hatter Tea Party in on Saturday, October 6 th from 2-4 PM. Travel down the rabbit hole and join us for another splendiferous event. Make sure to get your tickets before we sell out. More details can be found inside.
In other news, the City of Rancho Cordova awarded funds from Measure H for our senior center to receive a new storage shed and kiln. Construction for this project will begin in late September and should not interfere with any of our classes or programs.
Calling all dog owners and lovers. Don’t forget to join us at the Hagan Community Dog Park on Saturday, September 15th from 8am-12pm for our annual Doggie Day in the Park. See inside for more information.

THESE ARE THE FOODS YOU SHOULD BE
EATING EVERY SEASON OF THE YEAR Emma Bleznak - www.cheatsheet.com
Fall: • Brussels Sprouts - A half cup of brussels
sprouts contains more than your daily recommended intake of vitamin K. They’re also a great source of iron and protein.
• Sweet Potatoes - A single sweet potato has plenty of vitamins B6, C, fiber, magnesium, potassium and beta-carotene, as well as three to five times your daily need of vitamin A, which is essential to healthy eyes, skin and bones.
Winter: • Winter squash like butternut and spaghetti
squash are high in vitamins and low in calories, They also have a heart-healthy dose of fiber and folate.
• Pomegranates - Pomegranate juice has three times more antioxidants than red wine and green tea. The antioxidants in pomegranate juice can help protect your cells from damage, and reduce inflammation.
Spring: • Rhubarb - Rhubarb is great in pies, salsas, and
salads, and great for your health as well. The stem-and-leaf vegetable is packed with calcium, vitamin K, and beneficial antioxidants which help promote heart, eye, and immune system health.
• Asparagus - It’s low in fat and a good source of iron, B vitamins, and vitamin C. It is also high in fiber - your body digests fiber slowly which keeps you full in between meals and less likely to snack.
Join us on Thursday,
September 20th for our
monthly birthday
celebration!
Summer: • Corn - Two antioxidants in corn – lutein and
zeaxanthin – help to form macular pigment that filters out some of the sun’s damaging rays and act as natural sunglasses. An ear of corn contains all the necessary amino acids you need in a protein, fiber for your heart, and several characteristics that aid weight loss.
• Watermelon - Watermelon is 92% water, so each slice helps to keep you hydrated. Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. Watermelon keeps your body cool in the summer heat. You’ll also get fuller faster by eating water-dense, low-calorie fruits.
