President’s Message

Hello Marin Golden Thread Members,

2018 has come to a close and we are quickly charging ahead

into 2019! I have a feeling this year will bring us even more exciting programs, workshops, and show-and-tell items for us to admire.

I’m always in awe of fiber artists who find interesting mediums to stitch on, and this month I have found an artist who stitches on something I never would have imagined. Danielle Clough is a photographer, designer, VJ, and embroiderer who was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. Danielle has created stitched designs on cloth, fences, and tennis rackets (yes, fences and tennis rackets)!

Danielle’s inspiration comes from nature, with most of her subjects being plants, animals, and human portraits. She has previously been commissioned to create portraits of television stars and has a huge Instagram following where she is known as “Fiance Knowles.”

How fun would it be to see wonderful embroidered flowers and plants on the fences we see in our neighborhoods! Happy Stitching! Julie

Programs Notes from the Program Team

December 8, 2018 - Holiday luncheon

Our holiday luncheon was a success again this year. We had more members attend than in the past. A big thank you to Sandy Backer for organizing the luncheon again this year. We hope you all had a wonderful time. It was great sharing the celebration with you. Two very deserving members were presented with the Golden Poppy Award for their support of Marin Golden Threads. Thank you to Fran Thorsson and Andrina Ruzick for your continued support and dedication.

January 26, 2019 – Ribbon Embroidered Tin Cover with Sara Zander

This is for everyone who had signed up for Sara’s class, to be enjoyed at our January meeting. We are at the limit of 20, but life happens! Please be sure to let us know asap if you cannot attend. If you didn’t sign up and want to be on the wait list, please tell us SOON. Full kits have already been prepared. The kit cost of $15 each is owed to Sara. All you need to bring are both embroidery and craft/fabric scissors, a pen or pencil and (if you need them) battery powered light and magnifier. That’s it! Thanks for bringing correct change. See you next month!

Workshop

Celeste Chalasani Workshop

Celeste Chalasani Workshop

I think I can safely say that we all had a great time at Celeste's pilot workshop of the Berry Box. I think Celeste's instructions were great and we all accomplished quite a bit during class. In fact, I've heard that many of the completed Berry Boxes were on display at the November meeting. It was so much fun - I should have taken pictures but neglected to do so.

Betsy Morgan "Toy Chest" Workshop. The Betsy Morgan workshop will take place February 9 and 10, 2019 (I can't believe it's just around the corner!). The kit cost for the Toy Chest is $175. I won't know what Betsy's travel costs will be yet and I hope we can use the Hamilton space for this workshop as well, so hopefully additional costs won't be much.

We've received the kits for the pre-work and those of us signed up for the class are probably busily working on completing that prior to class. There are currently 11 folks signed up. It's not too late, as I've had a

couple of drop-outs. So, if you are interested, please let me know.

Kurdy Biggs Workshop, Fall 2019

No firm dates for this workshop yet. I'd better get busy and firm things up before the next newsletter!

So far, the three designs that are most popular are: Jessica Lane (2nd attachment), Elegance Cubed, and Creme de la Creme. Let me know if you have pictures already. Please let me know if you would like to be added to our interest list. I'll be in touch with Kurdy soon to firm up details.

Please let me know if you would like to be added to our interest list. I'll be in touch with Kurdy soon to firm up details.

Katherine Diuguid

The Bay Area Sampler Guild is having Katherine Diuguid teach in early 2020. We'd like to partner with them and have her teach us as well. Katherine is a gold work teacher and there seems to be a lot of interest in her designs. The project we will be stitching is called "Goldwork Beehive". It will introduce us to a variety of traditional and creative gold work techniques. So far we already have almost 20 people interested in this workshop.

This will be a 2 day workshop. The kit cost will be $160. It is designed for beginners to advanced embroiderers. The finished size will be 4" x 6". More details to follow as we get closer to 2020.

Another Possible Workshop for 2020 –

Ruthmarie Hofmann

Tidal Wash

Well Wishes

She has a number of designs that members seem to be interested in. Two are shown above. Please let me know which designs you like and if you'd be interested in participating in a workshop with Ruthmarie.

Shall we try to do three workshops in

either 2019 or 2020?

Julie Haymaker

There has also been a lot of interest in doing a shrinky dink workshop. Julie Haymaker is the owner of Shrinkets. She has a number of designs. Search for Shrinkets in google and look at the images of her designs. You can also go to her website, [http://www.juliehaymaker.com,]www.julieha

ymaker.com, and go to her "Look Book" to see her designs as well.

Anyway, please let me know of your interest and we can choose a design.

GPR GPR Retreat – The GPR Retreat will once again be held at Walker Creek Ranch, April 5 – 7, 2019. There are a few openings if anyone is still interested. For the 3 days of stitching and fun with meals it is only $280.00 Please see the information and registration form on pages 8 & 9. It has been brought to our attention that each Chapter needs to have all paperwork pertaining to set-up from the beginning, specifically the EIN number paperwork for the Chapter and available to those in charge. These should be organized in such a way that they can be given to each new successor President and Treasurer to have in their possession. EGA facebook is now posting stitch alongs which are free to all members. The first one "Ambrosia Honey" was created by an amateur designer. It has been a real success - 2800 people registered to receive the instructions. There will be more upcoming stitch alongs. The upcoming 2020 Seminar in Portland, Oregon is in the first stages of set up. The theme will be "Stitching Through Rose Colored Glasses". There is a great need for volunteers so, if interested, please contact Brandy Shaw, Chairman. It has been decided not to print and mail brochures for this seminar in order to save substantial amounts of money. All

brochures and information will be posted on-line. The San Francisco Chapter is having Terry Dryden in 2019 to teach one of her designs, Africa. If you are interested, see Laurel for contact info. Lois Kershner will be presenting a new virtual workshop which will be announced shortly. Happy stitching, Wendy

Some details about our Retreat at Walker Creek for those who have not attended before:

Walker Creek Ranch is a working ranch, which accommodates students from the Marin County Schools, weddings, business and social groups (like stitchers)! The kids stay in bunk houses, but we have simple, comfy suites. Each

suite boasts a full kitchen, shared sleeping quarters (2-3 per room), comfy living room and multiple full baths. The suites are just steps away (on mostly level ground with paved walkways) from the Playroom.

The Playroom accommodates 40, with BIG windows (curious deer, fawns, raccoons, foxes and turkeys stroll by often). Ample outlets and lights abound, but your private battery lamp (or extension cord) may be useful. Wi-Fi is nearly non-existent! Meals are served buffet-style in the Cafeteria, but you can forget images of plastic trays and surly wait-staff. Each meal is prepared by a trained chef and cheerful workers. Meals are mostly from freshly grown produce and locally harvested ingredients. Special needs are accommodated, just let us know on your registration form. Desserts may be cookies, fruit, cake or ice cream. Wine is permitted at meals as well as in the Playroom and Suites. You may bring your favorite to share, if you like. GPR provides a snack and soft-drink table in the Playroom, and you are welcome to bring items to share. Coffee and tea are available all day in the cafeteria, and may be carried into the Playroom or suites. Features at the Ranch include gentle hiking trails, a busy Turtle Pond and local wildlife (rabbits, foxes, turkeys, raccoons, hawks, deer, and quail, to name a few). Your time is your own. Sleep late, stay up ‘playing’ all night, nap in bed, hike or lounge in the sun whenever you wish. This retreat is a fun relaxing weekend. I hope you will decide to come play with us at The Ranch!
