Don’t get me wrong, I love rain. Love the fresh smell and the frogs in my back yard that croak me to sleep with their frog lullabies. And the rain has brought me more happiness -- lower water bills! So what did I do with the savings? I drove to Jo Ann’s and bought patterns! I wanted new patterns, including a vest pattern for our Chapter Challenge (details inside), but I also needed to buy smaller patterns because of recent weight loss and abdominal surgery. I decided to alter several of my favorite larger blouses down to my smaller size. I may get some new ideas at the Downton Abbey exhibit. Speaking of which, don’t forget to send in your check for the Downton Abbey bus trip! April is coming fast and you don’t want to have your check sent back with a note: “Sorry, too late, bus is full.” This is a golden opportunity to take advantage of your ASG membership since the Chapter has partially underwritten the trip. And while you are at it, write one for the Summer Sewing Retreat. There are only double rooms left. Team up with a friend from your neighborhood group. I have heard this is a great time and great food! And how about getting together and carpooling to the Inland Empire Chapter’s Sew What’s New Fair in Riverside. I went to one many years ago with an ASG friend and enjoyed myself. The Rusty Barn Show (aka Quilt, Craft and Sewing Festival) is coming up. Admission is free, and the Chapter will reimburse parking for those who sign up and work our booth. Bring water and a snack because the food is ok, but expensive. Bring a sweater; it can get cold in the hall. Details on all of these events are available inside this newsletter. So now that the rain has stopped for the moment, what should we do? Showhours are 10 am to 5 pm Thursday and Friday, and10 am to 4 pm Saturday.If three volunteers staff each block of time --10am-12pm, 12pm-3pm, and 3pm-5pm -- it will alloweach plenty of time to enjoy the show, eat lunch, andpromote our activities.

We are heading to the Muzeo Museum in Anaheim for aprivate tour of “Dressing Downton: Changing Fashionfor Changing Times.”
It’s an exhibition showcasing 36 costumes from thepopular PBS drama, “Downton Abbey.” This will be itsonly West Coast appearance!

Sew S l immer !By Nancy Nix-RiceAre you among the 95 per cent of American women whowould like to be a few pounds thinner? Well the clothesyou sew can trim away 10 or more visual poundsinstantly. Here are just a few tricks to try:#1 – Use color to balance heavier areas. You don’t needto drape in head-to-toe black. Most women look healthierand thinner in glowing colors, but use them on bodyareas you want to emphasize. Use a darker neutral (dk.brown, navy or charcoal) on areas you want to minimize.#2 – Sew “columns of color." Match pants and blouse sothe eye will move easily up and down your body,skimming away extra pounds. Add a contrast jacket forinterest, but leave it open to avoid breaking the column.Reverse the formula -- match skirt and jacket, adding acolorful blouse.
#3 – Taper gently inward from the hip to the hem of pants or a straight skirt to elongate thelower body; taller equals trimmer every time.#4 – Find a flattering hemline. For pants, hem the back to cover the join between the heel andbody of the shoe – even longer if the heels are high. And have the fabric graze the top of theshoe in front, with a slight break. For skirts, be sure the hemline hits at a narrow spot on yourleg. Also be sure the length of the skirt exceeds its width, creating a rectangular proportion. Asthe style becomes fuller or the size larger, the length needs to increase to stay slimming.#5 – Scrutinize sleeves. Too-long sleeves look dumpy. A short sleeve should end higher thanthe fullest point of the bust. A long sleeve should just cover the wrist bone. Pushing up a longsleeve is another way to lift and slim the look. Sleeve width is important too. Tapering the sleevea half-inch or so creates a sleeker look and allows some daylight between your arms and body,avoiding a “blocky” appearance.#6 – Support the shoulders. Most women need some gentle padding to keep garments hanginggracefully. A little more shoulder can balance broad hips, a rounded tummy, thick upper arms ora full or low bust. For unstructured garments like blouses, a removable foam pad gives theneeded lift, but can be removed if the blouse is worn under a tailored jacket.Use these tips to update existing garments or incorporate them in new projects. And either way,you'll be thrilled when you get that delightful question: “Have you lost weight?”

The North County Coastal Neighborhood Group (NG) selected TV-tray pressing tables for theirFebruary project. "We felt this would be perfect for taking to sew days and retreats, for example theJune Sewing Retreat inTemecula," said NG Leader Luann Goedert. "It is helpful for putting next to yourmachine during repetitive pressing tasks."Luann has graciously shared instructions for anyone who wouldlike to add this handy table to their sewing space!
Materials and Supplies:•Inexpensive wooden tray table (I found that Target and Walmarthave these for individual sale, but look at yard sales for the bestdeal.)
•Natural fiber batting: 6 pieces (Warm and Natural), about 1/2"larger than the top of your TV tray; adjust to thickness of table
•Home Dec-weight cotton fabric: about 3" larger than top of TVtable; if using quilting-weight cotton, add layer of canvas or twillunderneath.
•Staple gun
•Pinking Shears or Pinking Blade in Rotary Cutter
•Tack Hammer (optional)
•Helper (optional)
Construction:Pink edge to reduce frayingPress fabric; lay down with wrong side up; center and stack battingpieces on top of the wrong side of fabricCenter table, upside-down, on top of the batting. Easier if you keeplegs open, as if it were in standing position (better balance)Starting in center of one side, pull the fabric to the underside of thetable and staple it in place. This is when a helper might be useful tohave one hold, and one staple.Move to the other side, pull the fabric to the back, gently pulling tomake sure it is stretched, but not strained, across the table top.Staple and repeat, alternating sides.At each corner, pull the fabric toward the table bottom and staple.Now fold each side toward the table bottom and staple in place.Enjoy!

According to Pam, our chapter has had a presence at theFair from at least the early ‘80s, but times change andCAB recently made the decision to promote ASG at othervenues that are more targeted to sewers. This year willbe our first at the Rusty Barn Quilt, Craft and SewingFestival, May 11-13, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. If youhave availability, volunteer to staff our table at thisexciting new venue for our Chapter (see article page 2).
