COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director Happy New Year 2013. Here in Connecticut we’re mostly dug out from the 3+ feet of snow from Winter Storm Nemo. I am the person JR mentioned with the snowblower that broke during the clean up. The only lingering issue is no one wants to trudge through the deep snow to walk our dog to his usual spot in the woods behind the house. I suppose another effect of the storm is that PMS (parked motorcycle syndrome) has set in hard. I can only hope that the prediction of an early spring by the grand prognosticating resident rodent of Punxsutawney, PA is accurate. Speaking of which… If you’ve ever wanted to visit this well known small town known for their groundhog, it’s only a couple hours ride from our Spring Fling Rally base camp in Bedford, PA. We are anticipating this to be a well attended event and Jason is promising a great time for all. He has already negotiated a lower room rate than originally posted, and those who booked prior will be adjusted. There are already 44 registered attendees and it’s only February. Be sure to book your rooms now to guarantee a room and don’t forget to register online. More details on the back page. There is a tentative early fall event in the works for Lake George. Stay tuned and more details will come out in a later issue when things are locked in. There are 2 non-rallies in July and August. Check out the Ride & Event schedule. If you can’t do the rally, there are a many varied activities already posted to the online schedule: tech day, overnights, camping, and of course the national rally in Idaho Falls. If you’re a COG rally newbie it would be worth the time to read the “New Member’s Rally Primer” that AAD Terry Faherty posted on the forum a few years ago. It is still valid today. Here is the link: forum.cog-online.org/index.php/topic,26130.0.html Check out the info in this issue on the rider courses we are trying to fill with COG members & friends. Several members have mentioned to me that they are planning to attend. Register for one or both of the courses on your own and I hope to see many faces of COG there. Now for a quick club update… COG Northeast is off to a great start this year, welcoming 20+ new members since our last newsletter. The complete NE membership statistics are: 589 members, 106 Associate Members, 3 Industry Members. On the national level COG membership is 2004 Members and 294 Associates. At this time all director positions are filled. Thanks to NE member Bill Hilson for taking the reigns of the Concourier. We look forward to your first issue. As far as Board of Director openings go, the Safety Officer and Treasurer positions will need volunteers to fill them at the end of 2013. Come forward early and have time to learn the job from the outgoing officer. Congrats & Kudos to Tim on his first solo newsletter. Nice job!!!! Editor’s Corner Introductions

Tim Anderson #9470 Hi fellow NE COG members! There is a new face in Editor’s Corner with this issue. After four years of producing great Northeast Area newsletters, Neil Bald-win has passed the torch to me, and I’ll strive to maintain his high standards. I expect to keep the format the same in the near term, but welcome any sugges-tions that you may have for possible improvements. Thanks to all the AADs who submitted updates to kick off 2013! The Ride Events section has two full pages of great opportunities to ride, eat, camp, and make new friends this year. Get those calendars out and start plan-ning!

Normally this corner will be very brief, but for the first one I’ll introduce myself. Like many members, I’ve been riding most of my life, first dirt bikes and then dual sports when I turned 16. I’ve racked up lots of miles and smiles around the Northeast. I finally suc-cumbed to the power and comfort of the C14, purchasing one in 2011. I immedi-ately joined COG and was amazed at the wealth of info and activity that was available online. I ride with several groups, but get to as many COG events as I can. In 2012, I completed the New England and Empire State MotoMara-thons on the C14 – the perfect bike for such events. I enjoy solo and small group sport rides, do all my own wrenching, and am always looking for that next cool farkle and the next piece of perfect road. See you out there!

NORTHEAST AREA NEWS is published 5-6 times a year for Northeast Area members of the Concours Owners Group. Submissions are welcomed and members are encouraged to share their COG experiences. Email: [email protected] Snailmail: Tim Anderson, 1040 Ocean Avenue, New London, CT 06320. Many of the opinions stated in this publication may make no sense to those of sound mind and may just be conveniently ignored. If you use any of the information in this rag to incur damage to yourself, your bike or any innocent or not so innocent bystanders it is you own fault...you were warned! © 2013 Concours Owners Group

New Members First things first, a warm welcome to our newest NE area COG members!

News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page)

ON (GTA) Dave Clancy #5452 The Toronto Motorcycle Super Show, January 4-6, provided a booth to the COG South Central Ont. (GTA) area. Some COG members, some Concours owners, owners of other brands, and folks interested in COG or Concours bikes stopped by. We hope some of them come out to our 2nd Tuesday of every month Meet & Greet or explore the on line web site. We welcome the

new members who have joined COG. Richard DeJong served as point man and stored the banner and stand. Dave Perkins helped with set up and take down, served as booth crew and sup-plied his much modified C10. Cana-dian Kawasaki Motors Inc., Jim Quilty, loaned us a new C14. The other crew members were John Strupat, Pete Bok-kers, Greg Coleman, Dave Gingrich, Paul Marshall and Tom Kumagai. Thanks, you guys make it happen. Don’t forget to come to our monthly Meet & Greet at the Mohawk Inn (see www.cog-online.org calendar), a great place to make contacts and plan trips. Check out the “Spring Fling” rally on our May long weekend, an easy one day distance for us. Pat and I hope to see you there. Dave Clancy

MA/ME/NH/VT Greg & Tracey Habel #7010/7010A With the planning complete for the 2013 season and the calendar of events planned out, we are excited to “Get out There!” We just had our first event of the season, the Winter Social at the Horseshoe Pub in Hudson, MA. A per-fect opportunity to shake off the winter blues and discuss our area’s upcoming activities. Plus you can’t beat the 100+ beer selection there. Special thanks to former AAD Kevin Martin for hosting several of this year’s events. We have coordinated with Kevin to schedule our monthly Meet and Greets during the lunch stops on Kevin’s rides in MA, NH, and VT. The kick-off Meet and Greet is Saturday, March 23rd at the Miss Mendon Diner in Mendon, MA. Kevin has a ride to Petey’s Seafood in Rye, NH on Saturday, April 13th fol-lowed by the popular Tech Session at Pat and Sherry Mulloy’s in Monson, MA on Saturday, April 27th. Please re-serve your spot in the garage ASAP by contacting us via email ([email protected]) to discuss the work you would like to do and/or need help on. So many bikes, so little time to service! In May we have a camping weekend with all the fixins. This year Tom Kerrigan and his wife Ann have graciously offered to host the event at their place in East Bridgewater, MA starting Friday, May 3rd thru Sunday, May 5th. Join for the weekend, Satur-day’s ride, dinner, or all of the above. Mark Williams is in the process of coor-dinating an Experienced Riders Course in southern New Hampshire with rid-ing coach Corvus Shorter. Final details are being worked out along with a date for either May or June. The class is lim-ited to 12 riders. Keep your eye on the www.cog-online.org calendar for sign-

up details. More upcoming highlights: July 13th - 14th Kevin Martin is hosting an overnight trip to Cooperstown, NY. On Sept 13th – 15th we are hosting a roaming un-rally from West Dover, VT to North Conway, NH with a stop at Whitehorse Gear. Monthly rides and Meet and Greets fill up the remainder of the calendar. Always plenty of oppor-tunity for you and your guests to attend a COG function. Please be sure to regis-ter on-line on the NE events calendar at www.cog-online.org, if you plan to at-tend an event. This will help us make reservations for lunch and plan accord-ingly to keep the ride group size at a safe number. If you have an idea for a ride or are interested in hosting an event, please contact us and we will be glad to help you put it all together! Un-til next time! Greg & Tracey Metro NY/NJ Terry Faherty #792 Greetings from the frosty Tri State area! We're half-way through the off sea-son for most of us. I have snuck out here and there for some local keep the carbs (yes, I still have those) clean rides, but soon Mother Nature will be bringing us some nicer weather to enjoy. We had a nice turn out for the motorcycle show at the Javitz Cen-ter. Ten folks rallied at the Connie and headed out to Heartland Brewery in Times Square to enjoy some COG cama-raderie. The show was quite crowded this year and although it made seeing all the new shinies harder it bodes well for the industry. Perhaps folks are look-ing for some freedom from all the nega-tive news we've been getting lately. Before you know it May will be upon us. Have you registered and made reservations for the Spring Fling? I have and I'm looking forward to some good times. Jason is the Rally-meister of Rallymeisters, so you know it will be worth it. I plan to head out early Thursday morning, May 16th, to beat the usual NYC snarl. Anyone who has plans to attend Americade can drop me a pm/email/text and we can try to get together for a gathering. I'll most likely

be staying in Queensbury all week at the palatial estate of Scott Sorger, let’s hope the weather is better this year. We are in the early stages of planning a Fall Rally in Lake George. As soon as we nail down the details we will post them on the forum and get them into the Concourier and newsletter. That's all for now, see you on the road! Pittsburgh/Western PA Joe Cyprych, #4665 Hello fellow COGers! The end of winter is fi-nally in sight and now is the time to start planning our 2013 rid-ing season. First up for most of us will be the spring rally in Bedford, PA, a great area for riding with a lot of great attractions in the area. And its hosted by our own Rallymiester Jason Kaplitz, who certainly knows how to throw a great rally. Hope to see a bunch of you there! As for our own area rides I will have the details up soon for a few rides that I am planning. I was thinking of doing a Somerset area weekend this year in place of our annual Cook Forest weekend to change it up a little this year, let me know your thoughts on this one please. Also, we’re going to do our annual COG in Cannan event in Sep-tember. The Canaan Valley Resort as-sured me they will continue to give us a good rate on rooms and quite possibly we will be in their new building. Gotta love Cannan, it’s a great area for a weekend get together. I will also be doing the Sunday Meet & Greets and rides most weeks, but if you’re planning to attend, contact me beforehand, I may be out of the area some weekends. The details for these rides and others will soon be added to the COG online sched-ule. I am planning my own upcoming riding season and we are looking for-ward to meeting up with old and new friends again. As always if you have a ride or a event that you are interested in doing please contact myself or Steve and we will help you make it happen. Remember, the Northeast area rocks! Thanks, Joe & Michele

COG Sleeping Beaver Ride Report It was a rare and pretty day for January, lows in mid 30s in the AM, highs in mid 50s later, and sunny all day! Thanks to Jim Sparkman for giving us a nice route and great directions. It was good to see Jim and Martha again, as well as Glenn, Tim, Clyde, Clay, Dan, and Clark. Yours truly made it nine riders. At our 60 mile rest stop at the Sheets, we had six C14s, an 800 GS, and a Tiger 800 XC! Vinny's Grill and Pizzeria in King George served up a great lunch. The Ruben was excellent! Oh yeah… we did see one Sleeping Bea-ver. Actually he was a pretty big one and a victim of Michelin Disease; the buzzards thought they had hit the lot-tery. Thanks to everyone who showed up to enjoy the nice day riding with friends. Pictures on the right. MD Report John Hamilton #9279 Ramblings of a man made mad by winter… Greetings and condolences to our brothers and sisters up north, with snow up to the top of their door frames, broken snow blowers, and many can-celed events. Someone on the forum chided me for not riding in cold weather. How’s that working out for you now? LOL! Russell Fleming has scheduled a number of rides for the MD/VA/WV/PA region. On March 23-24 is the Crab Cakes Ride. Get the full details on the calendar online. Other rides taking place in our region: April 14 – C14 Riders and Friends Ride April 28 - ST Camaraderie Ride 1 - VA June 2 - Paul Anderson Ride June 9 - Bowies Ride June 21-23 - North South 16 Meet July 13 - ST Camaraderie Moonlight Ride

August 18 - ST Camaraderie Ride 2 - PA October 13 - C14 Riders and Friends Ride November 8-10 - COG Brrr Ride And of course, the NE Spring Fling Rally is on May 16-19, and we are meet-ing for lunch at the Crabby Pig in Cum-berland, MD the weekend before, on Saturday the 11th. Last year we just about took over the place by putting four tables together, let’s go for five this year. All of the 2013 events are on the calendar by now, and many of them are close enough for us to go to. For in-stance, the Spring Fling in Bedford, PA is barely over an hour from Hagers-town, MD. Tony Borum and I are rid-ing up together, anyone else that wants to hook up with us for the short ride, we’d welcome it. Represent! I’m running another 3-day run to El-kins, WV on my motorcycle club side, but anyone who wants to go play in Elkins, stay at a really nice Holiday Inn Express, ride some mountain trains, see a show at the American Mountain thea-

ter, and go for a ride in the wicked WV mountains, is welcome to come, June 29-30. I have 7 rooms reserved until June14th. Call me at 240.291.8603 or email me at [email protected] for information. We will be meeting for good BBQ at Mr. B’s BBQ (new loca-tion, just south of Berryville) on Satur-day, July 13th. Come join us any time, most arrive between 10 and 12. No need to stay, but by all means, come eat some of that awesome BBQ! I don’t know how many events I will make in 2013. I definitely cannot make the Na-tional, it is too far away. And I’m hop-ing the VA will be able to do the rest of my surgery during the year, so I will have a bunch of down time. But it will stop a lot of the pain, so it’s worth it. Anyway, winter has made me mad as a March Hare, and I am looking forward to thawing out and bringing my bike out of hibernation, and sharing some tasty mixed drinks out of my top case at the Spring Fling. Peace! JR

(continued from page 4) Central NY Rob Romano #10584 The beginning of the year brought the first meeting of the Central NY Region of COG in Cortland, NY. A small but enthusiastic group gathered at a local restaurant which led to a few hours of conversations. With map in hand, the group discussed vari-ous rides throughout the area that we hope to introduce to the COG faithful during the year. All were in agreement that there are numerous locations for group rides, meets and several suppor-tive dealerships. Once the riding season sets in, the expectation is that we'll host rides and tech weekends. Lastly, I'd like to remind everyone that card carry-ing COG members can get a discount if they visit K&H Kawasaki in Little York. (Just north of Cortland) Rob Romano

COG Experienced Rider Courses in Connecticut By Norm Walton #7011

It's been several years since we've organized an experi-enced rider course for COG members in Connecticut. There are 2 MSF courses offered by Connecticut Rider Education Program: the Experienced Rider Course (ERC) and Advanced Rider Course (ARC-ST). Both are reasonably priced. Suc-cessful completion of an ERC gets the student a completion card that can be used to obtain an insurance discount. You will need to check with your insurance company if the ARC-ST qualifies for a discount as it does not have an evaluation or issue a completion card. We hope to have at least one COG member as an instructor for these courses. The community college will not offer dedicated course(s) to the club unless as a club we collectively submit enough paid registrations to fill the class in ad-vance. We tried it this way in the past and it was a royal PITA to coordinate. It was suggested we pick specific courses/dates, and then inform our members to register for those specific courses using the standard registration process.

2013 motorcycle course registration is now open. Registration for either course through Naugatuck Valley Community College. You can download the info packs, schedules, and registration forms from their web site. Be sure to register early as these courses are open to the public and the early dates tend to fill quickly.

Naugatuck Valley Community College Motorcycle Program www.nv.edu/Motorcycle 203-575-8123

Experienced Rider Course (ERC) May 11, 12 PM—6:30 PM. On-cycle: Naugatuck Valley Community College, Waterbury, CT This one-day course will help you improve braking, turning and evasive maneu-vers and teach advanced “street strategies” for riding. There is no classroom session and approximately 6.5 hours of on-cycle instruction. Fee: $85.00 for rider; $20 for passenger.

Advanced Rider Course (ARC-ST) June 15, 7 AM—6:30 PM Class session: Naugatuck Valley Community College, Waterbury, CT On-cycle session: UCONN, Torrington, CT This one-day course is to provide rider development in the areas of risk man-agement, decision making, riding strategies, and rider behavior choices. Exer-cises focus on more advanced braking, turning, swerving, and utilizing a per-formance oriented body position. There is a classroom session in the morning and on-cycle instruction in the afternoon for a total of approximately 8.5 hours of instruction. Bikes will be inspected. Fee: $50.00 for rider.

For both courses, participants must present a valid motorcycle license (driver only), current motorcycle registration and insurance card. You must also use your own street legal motorcycle (no straight pipes) for the course. Bikes will be inspected. Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to class start time to check paperwork.

We know this area and will have some great routes laid out for you. You’re only an hour from Cumberland, MD and parts of West Virginia. Heading east you are less than 100 miles from Gettysburg, PA. The Lincoln Highway (Route 30) is a great piece of Americana with many interesting things to see along the way. Heading west you are less than an hour from the home to many Flood City COG rallies, Johnstown, PA, and the many historic sites involving its three floods and its rebirth. The Flight 93 National Memorial is only 25 miles from our motel and we will have a special tour arranged for our group on Saturday. Details to follow.
