    Inspection Methods/Techniques

Liquid Penetrant (LP) InspectionTeam utilizes LP inspection to detect defe cts that

are open to the surface in all t ypes of nonporousmaterials. In castings and forgings, these may be

cracks or leaks in new produc ts or fatigue cracks inin-service components. Testing is performe d usingvisible red dyes under visible light conditions orfluorescent dyes under ultraviolet light. Evaluationand classification of material is based on Code orcustomer requirements.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)Teams MT detects surface and ne ar-surface

imperfections such as cracks, seams and laps inferromagnetic materials, and is used to assesslocation, size, shape and extent of these imperf ec-

tions. When the test object is magnetized, flawsperpendicular to the magnetic field direction c auseflux leakage. Magnetic particles applied to the surfaceare held at the location of the imperfection by fluxleakage.

Electromagnetic TestingElectromagnetic testing applies to a family of test

methods that uses magnetism and electricity to detector measure cracks, flaws, corrosion or heat damagein conductive materials. Magnetic properties andgeometric analysis are used to determine the besttechnique to identify defects. Electromagnetic testingmethods include:

Eddy Current Testing (ET) Teams standard EddyCurrent testing is ideal for nonferrous materials suchas heat exchanger tubes, condensers, boilers, tubingand aircraft surfaces. Teams ET uses ele ctromagneticinduction to detect flaws in conductive materials, displaying the presence of very small cracks, pits, dents and general thinning.

Remote Field Testing (RFT) Teams RFT is utilizedto inspect ferromagnetic tubing. Extremely sensitiveto wall thickness variation with near equal sensitivityto inside and outside surfaces, RFT does not have theskin effect difficulties that conventional eddycurrents have when inspecting ferromagneticmaterials.

Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Teams MFL inspectionis an ideal way to inspect large ferromagnetic steelsurfaces such as storage tank floors. When a magneticfield is passed through the steel, flux leakage caused

by pitting and corrosion on the underside of the flo oris detected by MFL sensors in the scanning unit anddisplayed for the operator. MFL is also used onferromagnetic heat exchanger tubing and processpiping as a screening technique for wall loss.

Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) ACFM provides depth information of cracks up toone inch deep, and may be used on coated surfaces.Teams ACFM testing equipment establishes a loc allyuniform current in the test object and measures themagnetic flux density above the sur face. Discontinui-

ties cause changes in the current, and thus, themagnetic field.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)UT uses high frequency ultrasonic waves to detect

surface breaking and internal imperfections, measurematerial thickness and determine acceptance orrejection of a test object based on a reference codeor standard. Teams UT tec hniques provide instantresults, and are sensitive to both surf ace and subsur-face discontinuities throughout the material. UT iscapable of detecting imperfections throughout theentire material thickness, and may be used w ith accessto only one surface. Team offers the following UTtechniques:

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) Teams UTTmeasures remaining wall thickness on piping, pressurevessels, storage tanks and other materials, and canbe used to scan bolts, shaf ts and raw materials forimperfections. A s traight beam is directed at the testpiece and, utilizing the round trip time for the ultra-sonic energy, the distance to the flaw is displayed in

thousandths of an inch. On UT units with A-scan, thedisplay will show multiple flaws at different depths.

Shear Wave UT (A-Scan) Teams shear wave UT orA-scan testing transmits an ultrasonic wave at apredetermined angle into the test material. Surfacesnormal to the beam path and cornertraps reflect thewave energy back to the transducer. The display showsthe distance the wave traveled to the imperfec tion andthe relative strength of the energ y.

B-Scan Teams B-scan is useful for corrosion analy-sis or locating laminations and inclusions in ne wrolled materials. Real-time imaging displays a prof ileof the test material along the scan path. Images can

    be stored for later review.

C-Scan Teams C-scan can be used to determinecorrosion rates and code calculations. The inspectionis done in an immersion tank or w ith a tank crawler, and data is displayed on a plane view utilizing a colorsystem to indicate various material thicknesses.

Internal Rotating Inspection System (IRIS) TeamsIRIS inspection detects defe cts and measures wall lossof both ferrous and nonf errous tubing. It providesinformation about the geometry of the defect while

accurately measuring local defects and wall loss onboth the inside and the outside of a tube. Defec tsunder support plates are easily detected and quanti-fied as well. Computerized reporting and tube sheetmapping are available.

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Ideal for inspect-ing and sizing defects in welds, TOFD uses two angledprobes (one on each side of the weld) to transmitsound waves into the test material at angles specificto its thickness. Discontinuities are shown as breaks

in the waves or as additional waves between modelines. TOFD is normally utilized in conjunction withPhased Array UT.

Phased Array UT (PA) PA provides sharper detectioncapability for off-angle cracks, and is capable ofdisplaying multiple presentations simultaneously. PAapplies computer-controlled excitation to individualelements in a multi-element probe. By varying thetiming of the excitation, the sound beam can be sweptthrough a range of angles. The shape of the beam mayalso be modified to a specific focal distance or spot.

Positive Material Identification (PMI)Teams Positive Material Identif ication (PMI)

quickly and accurately identifies the composition ofmore than 100 different engineering alloys onsite.Team can perform PMI on vir tually any size or shapeof pipe, plate, weld, welding materials, machinedparts or castings.

    Advanced Technologies

Technology continues to play a major role inthe development of NDE/NDT and inspectionservices. Advancing technologies are making

inspections faster, safer and more accurate. These

    technologies include:

Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM)Originally developed for inspection of fatigue

cracking, ACFM is an advanced technique fordetecting surface cracks and pinpointing the location, length and depth of the defect. This rapid, one-passET method does not require ex tensive cleaning of thework piece or electrical contact.

Unlike Dye Penetrant (PT) and Magnetic ParticleTesting (MT), ACFM works through paint and coatingsand in a wide range of temperatures. Applications

include painted or coated piping, process vessels, structural frameworks, bridges, cranes, a xles and shiphulls. Results are automatically recorded and acceptedby certification authorities.

Computed Radiography (CRT)Nearly everything that can be done with conven-

tional film-based radiography can be done bet ter, faster and more accurately with Teams advancedComputed Radiography system. CRT produces digitalimages on reusable phosphorous plates with lowerexposure requirements. This process translates tosmaller exclusionary zones and decreased exp osuretimes in your facilities. The original archived imagecannot be altered, thus maintaining the integrity ofthe raw data. Without altering the archived image, theelectronic image-viewing software can be sharpened, filtered and zoomed for analysis by the technician orcustomer to enhance evaluation.

Digital images can be e-mailed or posted on theWeb, allowing others to aid in analysis or reportresults. Viewing software also allows for digitalannotation and measurement using a mo use and/or

keyboard instead of grease pencil or overlays.CRT uses the same radiation producing devices.

CRT requires no film, which means there is no needto buy or dispose of che micals.
