Keynote: Malbert Smith , Ph.D.PRESIDENT AND CO-FOUNDER OF METAMETRICS®

THURSDAY 3.19 G 8:30amMalbert Smith III, Ph.D., is a leading expert in educational reform. He is the president and co-founder of MetaMetrics®, the developer of the widely adopted Lexile® Framework. Malbert is a senior investigator on a US National Center for Education Statistics research study to examine National Assessment of Educational Progress benchmark scores in relation to university and career readiness. He also serves on the boards of the UNC School of Education Foundation, Public School Forum of North Carolina, National Summer Learning Association, North Carolina Virtual Public Schools, and LEARN NC. Malbert is also a research professor at UNC - Chapel Hill. He speaks frequently around the globe on issues related to educational research, measurement, and technology.

COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS IN A COMMON CORE WORLD

Since the release of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), there has been a great deal of attention devoted to the concept of college and career readiness. Now more than ever, we are equipping educators with tools in their toolbox to personalize instruction and help their students graduate college and be career ready. With tools like the Lexile Framework, educators are able to monitor literacy growth and differentiate instruction during the K-12 career of a student. Learn how the Lexile Framework is helping educators and parents quantify college and career readiness and the strategies that are being used to guide them on a path towards success.

Keynote: Jeff Charbonneau2013 NATIONAL TEACHER OF THE YEARFRIDAY 3.20 G 8:30amJeff Charbonneau, the 63rd National Teacher of the Year, has taught high school chemistry, physics and engineering at Zillah High School in Zillah, Washington for the past 12 years.

Charbonneau earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and his master’s degree in education from Central Washington University, where he was a member of the William O. Douglas Honors College. A National Board Certified teacher, he has received numerous awards and is the founder and director of the ZHS Robot Challenge, a statewide robotics competition.

As co-president of the Zillah Education Association, Charbonneau recognizes that many students see his course subjects as the “hard” science classes and he welcomes the challenge of overturning that stigma. He develops interactive learning experiences such as the robot challenge to help students develop confidence in their abilities.

WHAT IF?

High powered rockets, robotics, 3D printers, laser cutters, college credit for high school courses; all of these started by the power of asking “What if…” If it can be done in Zillah, Washington, then it can be done in your school. The bigger question is: When your “what if” comes true, will you be ready?

IT SUMMIT#NCCE2015ITKeeping up with the rapid pace of technology’s role in education can be daunting for IT leaders and the IT support team. In addition to keeping everything running smoothly, IT also has to play a customer service role for staff, students and parents. In this engaging and interactive summit, we will focus on how to balance technical and legal requirements with customers who expect more and more from technology every year.

New this year: BYOA - Build Your Own Agenda! Attendees will be given the opportunity to choose the topics for the IT Summit agenda.

In addition to the BYOA suggestions, we will look at current trends in education (e.g., Google Apps for Education vs. Microsoft Office 365, Personalization of teaching & instruction, systems to support data-informed instruction) and how to prepare for what is on the near term horizon.

GAMING/CODING SUMMIT#NCCE2015gamingExperience a hands-on approach to learning to code through the study and design of games. The more we learn about the brain, the more evidence surfaces that the best environment for learning is one that encourages a playful approach to learning. We will discover hands-on ways to enhance learning in your own classroom by using games and simulations to create opportunities for kids to learn through building and experimenting, express their creativity, and support each other while having fun in the process. We’ll discover ways to use the concepts of productive play and gamification in the classroom to motivate students and provide consistent feedback on their progress.

We will also dive into coding and app design as the new 21st Century literacy. You will get a hands-on look at creating interactive fiction games and art using code, as well as work with online prototyping tools that are used to help students solve real-world problems using algorithmic thinking and computer science skills.

Today, we have grown to over 4000 members and are home to the largest education conference in the Northwest leading, engaging and assisting educational communities to reach higher levels of student and educator success through the use of 21st Century technology.

The Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program at NCCE offers free professional learning opportunities for K-12 educators which are funded by a grant from the Library of Congress. Workshops are available to educators with a focus on digitized primary sources and materials from the Library of Congress. In 2014 over 300 educators participated in NCCE Library of Congress trainings.

In January 2014, NCCE was the recipient of the Technology to Improve Teaching and Learning (TITL) grant through the US Virgin Islands Department of Education. NCCE is working with 36 public school educators and administrators from St Thomas to implement technology integration into classroom instruction. This three-year program will have a lasting impact on the educators and their classrooms.
