Of the thousands of biomarkers that are currently being discovered, relatively few are being validated for further applications, and the potential of a biomarker can be quite difficult to evaluate. To aid in this imperative research, Dr. Kewal K. Jain’s Handbook of Biomarkers thoroughly describes many different types of biomarkers and their discovery using various "-omics" technologies, such as proteomics and metabolomics, along with the background information needed for the evaluation of biomarkers as well as the essential procedures for their validation and use in clinical trials. With biomarkers described first according to technologies and then according to various diseases, this detailed book features the key correlations between diseases and classifications of biomarkers, which provides the reader with a guide to sort out current and future biomarkers.

In the rapidly-evolving landscape of neurosciences, it is no easy task to select a limited array of topics to present in a text such as this. The current volume takes as its purpose to provide a representative survey of the current science of brain repair for those seeking to establish a foundation in the field or to replenish a prior knowledge base that may have lapsed in its currency. It also hopes to offer insights into what remains elusive to our collective investigations, defining the “frontiers” of brain repair for those that are currently immersed in the exciting intersection of biological advances and neuroscientific discoveries.

The Second Edition of the Handbook of Neurochemistry, which was published about 24 years ago, consisted of 10 volumes. The present, Third Edition, The Handbook of Neurochemistry and Molecular Biology, is over twice as large; indicating a great expansion of neuroscience in the past two decades. We now have not only more data on brain mechanisms relating to behavior (mental activity and cognitive processes), but we understand in some detail the mechanisms of these functions. The past editions focused purely on neurochemical aspects – the new edition reflects the need of interdisciplinary approach for understanding neural mechanisms. In addition to metabolic processes, the 17 new volumes explore the functions of peptides, transport, immunology and other processes not well understood 24 years ago. Several volumes deal with pathological changes and with repair and therapy of both mental and neurological pathologies. The significance of understanding neural processes needs no emphasis – its potential is primary in mental and neural pathology, but also in physiological importance.
SELLING POINTS: The volumes serve as an aid to researchers expanding our knowledge and to
educators training the next generation of neuroscientists and clinicians Provides an evaluation of the results of investigations; to serve as a guide rather
than enumerating all the available findings in detail – it indicates future possibilities and the existing knowledge in neuroscience

The main objective of this book has been to analyze in depth and discuss the different aspects related to the design and elaboration of cell-enclosing microcapsules, even the regulatory features and clinical trials under development. These improvements will lead to progression in this therapeutic approach which may become one day closer to a realistic proposal for clinical application. The advances in drug delivery technology have enabled a new era of drug discovery and development. In this regard, cell microencapsulation is a technology that opens new venues and possibilities to the administration of new active principles and may be the key to solve several issues related to the correct administration of new therapeutic agents to finally success in the clinical setting.
SELLING POINTS: Due to the organization of the chapters, this book can be read at different levels and
readers may analyze from basic aspects of encapsulation, biomaterials, clinical applications and regulatory and industrial issues of this technology
Useful to expert researchers who may find information and new ideas about the cell microencapsulation area

Stability by Linearization of Einstein's Field EquationAUTHORS: LLUÍS BRUNA and JOAN GIRBAU, Universitat Autònoma
de Barcelona, SpainISBN-13: 978-3-0346-0303-4PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 225 p., HardcoverPRICE: $79.95AVAILABLE (US): May 2010
The aim of this book is to establish the precise mathematical framework in which linearization stability of Einstein equation with matter makes sense, and once this is achieved, to find conditions for this type of stability when a Robertson-Walker model for the universe is considered. The concept of linearization stability arises when one wonders whether the solutions of a linearized equation do really approximate solutions of the corresponding true equation. This requires a new definition of linearization stability adapted to Einstein equation, a bit different from the classical one. However, this new definition can not be applied directly to the Einstein equation because energy conditions ties both deformations of the metric and of the stress-energy tensor. Therefore, one must look for a background where the variables representing the geometry and the energy-matter are independent. This representation is given by a well-posed Cauchy problem for the Einstein’s field equations.
SELLING POINTS: Contains classical results on stability of great beauty Presents all the objects needed to prove the theorems, making the book self-
contained Provides a new definition of stability of Einstein's equation adapted to the case of
matter and gives results concerning stability in Robertson-Walker models

The book is meant to be used in the beginning of a materials science and engineering study. Topics dealt with are "crystallography", "lattice defects", "microstructural analysis", "phase equilibria and transformations" and "mechanical strength". After the basic chapters, the coverage of topics occurs to an extent surpassing what can be offered in a freshman's course. Therefore the book can be used throughout an entire undergraduate and even graduate study as a solid background against which specialized texts can be studied. The central issue of materials science is to develop models that provide the relation between the microstructure and the properties, which is the feature distinguishing materials science from merely solid state physics and solid state chemistry. This book conveys this message.
SELLING POINTS: Perfect didactical structure, inclusion of the latest research results Fluent and rigorous teaching presentation of the concepts in materials science

It may at first seem that the world of subatomic physics is far removed from our every day lives. Isn’t it all just a waste of time and taxpayers' money? Hopefully, all who read this book will come to a different conclusion. Collider physics is all about our origins, and this aspect alone makes it worthy of our very best attention. The experiments conducted within the vast collider chambers are at the forefront of humanity’s quest to unweave the great tapestry that is the universe. Everything is connected. Within the macrocosm is the microcosm. By knowing how matter is structured, how atoms and elementary particles interact, and what forces control the interactions between the particles, we discover further clues as to why the universe is the way it is, and we uncover glimpses of how everything came into being. The Large Hadron Collider, in the process of coming online at CERN, is the world’s largest and most complex machine. It represents the pinnacle of human ingenuity, and its physical characteristics, costs, and workings astound us at every turn.

Comets have inspired wonder, excitement and even fear ever since they were first observed. But they are important members of the solar system, that contain material from early in the life of the system, held in deep-freeze. This makes them key in our understanding of the formation and evolution of many Solar System bodies.Recent ground- and space-based observations have changed much in our understanding of comets. Comets, and How to Observe Them gives a summary of our current knowledge and describes how amateur astronomers can contribute to the body of scientific knowledge of comets. This book contains many practical examples of how to construct comet light-curves, measure how fast a comet’s coma expands, and determine the rotation period of the nucleus. All these examples are illustrated with drawings and photographs. Because of their unpredictable nature comets are always interesting and sometime spectacular objects to observe and image.
