Welcome Back!

We are all very excited to start a new school year. The students are starting to get into the “routine of school” and seem to be comfortable with their schedule and their locker combinations.

Last year we had many school supplies donated by Nick Beecher’s family so if your child is in need of any supplies, please have them talk to Mrs. Schmidt or any of their core teachers so we can get them supplies they need. These supplies will be available throughout the school year also so if there is need during the school year we can help.

Reminder that students can enter the building in the morning at either the Flex entrance or the main entrance, however at 7:45, the Flex entrance is locked for the remainder of the school day. At the end of the day, students can exit either the Flex entrance, the main entrance, or the district office entrance. Parents please keep in mind that you cannot park in the district office lot as that is used for bus pick up and drop off.

We have an awesome group of students in grades 5-8 and all of us at LCIMS look forward to working with you and your children during the 2019-2020 school year.

Math: Welcome to a busy 5th grade! The month of September we worked on learning what 5th grade is all about and the procedures students need to follow in order to be successful. We are really emphasizing student responsibility, especially in the area of academics and making good behavioral choices! We are continually talking about the expectations throughout the building andhowwe show respect for all, here at LCIMS.

Science: 5th graders are beginning with a climate unit. They will learn what the difference is between weather and climate, as well as study the different climate regions of the world.

Social Studies: We begin the year reviewing map skills and then learn about ancient civilizations that eventually populated North and South America. That leads to European discovery of these same continents and we learn about the impact it had on those early civilizations.

Writing: Our first unit of 5th grade writing will be narrative writing! We will ask studentsto write about a true story from their lives. We love this unit because hearing their stories is a great way to get to know them!

Reading: We will begin the year by kicking off reading workshop! We will talk about where students can find books, how to find ‘good fit’ books and what independent reading will look like in our classrooms. Then, we will get into our first unit which focuses on characters. We will also have partnership books so students can talk with a classmate about what they’re reading and discuss the characters in their books. This year, we will expect students to read 20-30 minutes a night at home for homework. They are welcome to read anything they would like for this! Comic books, news articles, magazines… as long as they are reading!

ELA- Learners have been working hard to kick off their reading and writing lives in workshop. Students participated in a “book tasting” to try out new books in different genres. 6th graders are kicking off the year with our first narrative writing unit and a reading unit studying characters. Homework - Read 30 minutes at home and keep track of your thinking on post-its! .

Math - We are excited about the upcoming year with CPM math! Students have begun learning about working cooperatively and learning together. We have started looking at important math concepts and problem solving skills. As instructional practice begins, please let us know if you have any questions about your child’s math.

Math help - Please look at the math resource page in the newsletter. Also, all students know that they can get extra help before school, during lunch or recess, as well as after school. We are available to help!

Social Studies - In Social Studies, 6th graders are learning about the Industrial Revolution. Learners are studying the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, child labor, working conditions, imperialism, the Titanic, and other major events from this time period.

Science - Student scholars have been working on the different branches of science, gaining knowledge on specific lab safety and have begun the journey of learning an entire new math system for scientists, the metric system. Our learners will begin their first unit about Geology on Mars and searching for evidence that other planets were once habitable.

ELA - Welcome! I’m so excited for another year of learning and getting to know the seventh grade students. So far, this seems like an outstanding group of readers and writers. We’re beginning the school year by working on narrative writing. Students are learning techniques and strategies that fiction writers use when they write novels and short stories. By the end of the unit, students will have written a fictional short story of their own. On top of the writing students are being asked to do, they are also expected to be reading from an independent novel for at least 20 minutes a night. Please be sure you’re checking in to ensure this is happening. As always, feel free to email with any questions!

Science- Mrs. KoehnkeWelcome to 7th grade science! I am excited to explore our new Amplify Science physical science curriculum with your student this year. Our first unit is called Harnessing Human Energy. Our textbook is digital so it is imperative that students charge and bring their Chromebook with them each day to class. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you at our first set of conferences. If you have questions please contact me at [email protected]

Math ~ Seventh graders are learning everything that the need to know about probability. The have completed experiments in class to look at experimental vs. theoretical probability. They are using the Fundamental counting method and sample spaces to look at all possible outcomes and learning how to make great predictions. As we all know, the future is a prediction based on the past:)

Social Studies- Mr. Evers

In social studies we are off to a wonderful start. The students have shown great work ethic and enthusiasm up to this point. This year we are going to explore the wonderful world of civics. The students have just begun exploring topics such as immigration, naturalization and citizenship. Our next focus of study will be the English heritage of our government.

Ask your 7th grader to

show you our Google Homework Spreadsheet!

Social Studies - Welcome to 8th grade! This year we will learn about a multitude of topics including Geography, Political Science, Economics and Marketing, Sociology, Psychology and much more. We have begun by diving into Geography. Students are learning about relative and absolute location. We will have the opportunity to use GPS technology to look for these two types of locations and even practiced some “old school” map reading skills. We will continue to learn about the world we live in, which could not be more important in this day and age!

Math: What a great start to the school year! This entire year we will dedicate time learning about the importance of having a growth mindset. We started in week 1 doing several team building and STEM activities that the students really enjoyed. In unit 1, students will use a variety of problem-solving strategies such as: collecting data, finding patterns, drawing a graph and working backwards to help solve investigative problems. I’m looking forward to having a fun-filled year in math with your child!

English Language Arts: Happy new school year! 8th grade is starting the year with our Literary Non-Fiction reading workshop. We will read a variety of literature and analyze how parts of a text fit together and can contribute significant themes and key central ideas!

HOME SCREEN TIME….FRIEND OR FOE?

THIS YEAR I’D LIKE TO FOCUS ON ONE TOPIC THAT SEEMS TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF CONCERNS FOR MOST PARENTS…..SCREEN TIME. AS PARENTS, WE DIDN’T GROW UP WITH THE DISTRACTIONS OF CELL PHONES OR THE REAL LIFE STYLE VIDEO GAMES OR THE ACCESS TO THE ENTIRE WORLD THROUGH THE INTERNET. THIS LEAVES US AT A LOSS SOMETIMES ON HOW TO MONITOR OUR CHILDREN’S USAGE OF TECHNOLOGY. TECHNOLOGY CAN BE A BLESSING IN SO MANY WAYS BUT IN THE HANDS OF OUR INEXPERIENCED AND UNSUSPECTING CHILDREN, THERE CAN BE SOME DANGERS. EACH MONTH I WILL SHARE A NEW ARTICLE WITH INFORMATION TO HELP YOU NAVIGATE THIS ONGOING ISSUE.

Back to School: Time to set an electronic curfewBefore I put on my clinical hat and tell you lots of things I have found interesting about sleep research these days, I want to mention what some parents I have spoken with have told me. They tell me that their kids have devices in their bedrooms and their children are getting good about not using them by a certain hour. And my response is YES! AND … although this is probably true, once they hit the preteen and teen years and perhaps a boyfriend or girlfriend comes into the picture, or say another drama has really hit the road, or… – resisting devices can become impossible. (Not to mention they are tired so executive function, i.e. willpower and self-control goes down exponentially).

So if your child has any devices in their bedroom, even a teen, and sleeps fine with them—this is all about realizing that something will come up that will change that so doing the work to set up a sound sleep policy is a good idea.

Getting back into the new school year and on to regular sleep patterns is critical.

A major study showed that lack of sleep among our children has become a public health concern: 75% of teens do not get the recommended eight to 10 hours of sleep. This can lead to higher levels of mental health problems, accidents, lower academic engagement and much more. But how to help our kids and teens get more and better sleep?

Leslie Walker-Harding, a pediatrician and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington recently told me, “Sometimes

a sleep deprived teenager will appear just like they have anxiety, clinical anxiety or clinical depression and its sleep.” ⇾

Page 10: Navigation September 2019 · 2019-09-13 · explore our new Amplify Science physical science curriculum with your student this year. Our first unit is called Harnessing Human Energy.

Forty percent of teens say that most school nights they get less than seven hours of sleep and there's a strong association between more screen time and less sleep. Since 2012, when the prevalence of teens owning smartphones started to increase, the number of hours teens sleep has steeply decreased.

If there is one screen time rule I am absolute about in my house it is that personal devices stay out of all our bedrooms when we go to sleep. It has taken a lot of reminding, but many years in now, it’s a lot easier and there are very few battles with my teens around this rule.

The social interaction, stimulation, and draw of endless entertainment are of course a big reason why keeping tech out of the bedroom is a good idea, but the blue light that emits from these devices is a factor too. This type of light has been shown that it can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin and can disrupt the REM sleep. The most recent study I saw on this said it appears to only impact it by about 10 minutes but still that is something.

“This is an especially big problem for teens whose circadian rhythms are already shifting naturally, causing them to feel awake later at night,” the National Sleep Foundation says on its page about how blue light affects kids and sleep. “The end result: sleep-deprived or poorly rested kids who have essentially given themselves a mini case of jet lag.”

Here are the latest sleep guidelines from The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)

Children six to 12 years of age should sleep nine to 12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health. Teenagers 13 to18 years of age should sleep eight to 10 hrs per 24 hrs on a regular basis to promote optimal health."

Here a few questions to get the conversation started this week:

How many hours of sleep do you think is optimal for you? Then, show them what the AASM recommends. What time do you think would be a good time to take all your personal devices out of the room? If they say they need their phone as an alarm

clock, you might offer to get them a standard cheap alarm clock. Where might be a good spot in the house to deposit the devices?
