We are suddenly living in a time of heightened sensitivity and uncertainty. Navigating new social norms is part of the challenge – how and when do we apply the new habits we’ve adopted in response to the pandemic? Even in familiar environments these issues are causing confusion and a lack of clarity. Communication in the built environment has never been more important to establish policy, ease anxiety and provide comfort. Engaging your audience will establish trust, set expectations and provide a clear path to navigating the workplace.

6 Guiding Principles for Message CampaignsWhat considerations should be taken into account when deploying a messaging campaign?

Distinctiveness Signs should stand apart from the surrounding environment and should be easily distinguished from other types like advertising, wayfinding and regulatory signs.

Simplicity Signs should contain only 3-4 units of graphic information and exclude extraneous information.

Consistency Features and placement of related signs should remain consistent. Standardized icons should be used throughout the facility. Signs should be placed at key points of the route to reassure users of the messaging.

Legibility Proper typographic techniques and best practices with color contrast should be used to ensure optimal legibility for the general population.

Messaging The message should support and reinforce management’s goals, speak in a tone that feels relevant to the user and should be delivered in a succinct manner.

BudgetBudgetary implications of proposed solutions should be considered during all developmental stages of the project. Preliminary cost projections can be estimated and targeted during eary stage development.

New social norms are requiring changes in policy. Informing the public of changes to policy require dissemination of messages and the timing of the message is critical. Ideally, the process begins off site through a well planned awareness campaign designed to set the tone, answer initial questions, and introduce users to the message campaign so the delivery of the message can continue after the on-site arrival.

Turnkey SolutionsA turnkey signage solution would include a set of basic signage designs to assist in new client and staff flows and queuing, such as markers for physical distancing and health and wellness reminders. As an off-the-shelf package, it would offer you the speed to implement but may not cover all messaging needs. It would provide guidance on placement but would not be specific to your location.

Custom Solutions A custom signage solution would include custom icons, messages, colors, materials and specialty signage that may be unique to your facility. It could allow you to tie into a communications campaign that you already have in place or support one in development.

With either approach, our wayfinding specialists can assist with implementation by mapping optimal locations and quantities by type and material in conjunction with the existing systems, ensuring the client and staff journey is as seamless as possible.

Message Master PlanA message master plan maps messages across the built environment and categorizes them by type, author, platform and budgetary requirement. This helps stakeholders visualize new requirements, strategies and all the messages needed to communicate effectively as a unified, holistic system.

These master plans allow clients and facility managers to consider the messages as they work across different areas within the facility. They begin to answer specific questions, such as what information do people need quickly and where is it located? What is the overall quantity and quality of signage? Are there any additional messages that are not already covered?

They provide a framework for different authors and content creators to work collaboratively for the most effective flow, impact and engagement and helps signage fabricators provide overall pricing based on quantities and install locations within the facility.

Locations have a specific coding system (alphanumeric and color coding).

Application Types The physical environment drives the need for a variety of ways to display messages

Wall Graphics

These graphics are ideal for corridors and jetways; mounted directly to wall or fitted to existing frames.

Floor Graphic These graphics are typically used for conveying path marking and physical distance spacing.

Wall Sign These are signs made from a rigid substrate and fastened to a wall or glass partition. They range from inexpensive solutions like Sintra to more permanent solutions like acrylic.

Stanchion SignThese are printed poster-stype signs held within a metal frame. These are most ideal for circulation areas to convey cautionary health and wellness warnings, procedures or can also function as redirection and/or barrier indication.

Glass GraphicThese graphics integrate with existing vinyl graphics on glass within the space to deliver messaging. Artwork for these can also transition into floor graphics.

Marker SignThese are intended to be smaller signs made from a rigid substrate and applied vinyl artwork and direct printed messages for areas needing the highest amount of flexibility or updatability. These are most ideal for counter tops, desks, notification of cleanliness status and other very simple repeated simple messages.

Page 17: Navigating a Path Forward€¦ · EXPERIENCE DESIGN NAVIGATING A PATH FORWARD – MESSAGING AND SIGNAGE STRATEGIES 3 By taking a holistic approach to messaging, clients and facility

17

Material Types Signage can be produced in a variety of price points

Sintra® $$ Lightweight yet rigid board of moderately expanded closed-cell polyvinyl chloride (PVC) extruded in a homogenous sheet with a low gloss matte finish

PhotoTex™ $$ A peel & stick adhesive material made of 100% polyester fabric. PhotoTex™ has several versions to meet many inkjet and install surface needs. Its dependable adhesive can be removed and reused multiple times without any alteration or damage to the surface.

Acrylic $$$Fabricated plastic substrate for more permanent applications. Graphics can be direct printed and painted. Option to allow for acrylic panel to use erasable markers to allow for dynamic updates.

Glass Panels $$$$ Laminated glass with silkscreened or direct print graphics with coordinating metal hardware. Option to allow for glass panel to accept use of erasable markers to allow for dynamic updates.

Antimicrobial $$$Laminate available, heat applied and they direct print to face as a primer. Can be applied to any substrate.
