NAVAL APPLICATIONS OF THE MSR A Pathway to Prosperity www.eGeneration.org MAKING FUEL AT SEA FROM SEAWATER What You Should Know: The United States Navy’s seawater to fuel conversion program is promising for leaving the laboratory for use at sea with the fleet. The seawater to fuel program is envisioned to use the nuclear reactor of an aircraft carrier to produce jet fuel at sea in the carrier battle group. A higher temperature reactor would produce JP5 jet fuel and marine fuel much more efficiently, and thereby much more cheaply, than present reactors ab. Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are higher temperature reactors than present naval reactors, and have a tremendous power to weight ratio. The small size and versatility of a MSR makes it ideal for ships with high energy requirements for high energy weapons, and for cruising for essentially unlimited periods. It is unlikely that hydrocarbon based power generation will be able to fulfill this need. A MSR aboard a fueling ship could produce other fuels for naval ship use and to support ground force vehicles, reducing the necessity for a lengthy supply chain and giving our Navy and Marine Corps an unprecedented strategic advantage over all other military forces. Nuclear powered littoral class warships could dramatically reduce costs and improve the environment by not having to source hydrocarbon fuels at ports, which engender higher risks as potential terrorist targets. The eGeneration Foundation is working to form an alliance to develop a national energy plan, promoting the next generation of fuels powered by Molten Salt Reactor technology. As studies and analysis of this promising technology are widely understood, there will be widespread industry support for commercializing this next generation process, thus providing a clear pathway to prosperity. 1768 East 25 th Street Suite 301 Cleveland, OH 44114 216.367.0602 www.eGeneration.org The eGeneration Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational charity. • A  higher  temperature  reactor  would  produce  JP-‐5  jet  fuel    and  marine  fuel  much  more  efficiently,  and  thereby  much  more  cheaply,  than  present  reactors  ab.

• Molten  Salt  Reactors  (MSRs)  are  higher  temperature  reactors  than  present  naval  reactors,  and  have  a  tremendous  power  to  weight  ratio.
