ENERGY INDEPENDENCE What  You  Should  Know:  

• America  has  tremendous  coal  reserves  that  can  be  converted  into  transportation  fuels  like  synthetic  gasoline  and  synthetic  diesel  fuel,  as  well  as  many  strategic  chemicals.  

• Coal  to  liquid  fuel  technology  is  a  very  mature  and  robust  technology,  but  it  has  never  been  economical  or  environmentally  friendly  because  the    heat  needed  came  from  burning  fossil  fuels  such  as  coal  or  natural  gas.  

• Using  heat  from  a  Molten  Salt  Reactor  (MSR)  to  power  the  conversion  of  coal  to  transportation  fuel  offers  superior  economics  and  environmental  benefits.  

• Producing  transportation  fuels  from  coal  is  a  much  cleaner  process  than  using  coal  to  produce  electricity  in  traditional  coal  fired  power  plants.  

• South  Africa  and  China  already  have  a  thriving  “Coal  to  Fuel”  industry  that  is  expanding.  

• Coal  can  also  be  converted  into  Synthetic  Natural  Gas  (SNG),  and  in  the  long-­‐term,  producing  SNG  from  coal  will  help  stabilize  our  natural  gas  markets  and  calm  fears  about  exporting  natural  gas  overseas.  

• Converting  coal  to  natural  gas  is  a  very  mature  process,  and  America  already  has  a  “Coal  to  SNG”  plant  in  North  Dakota  that  has  continued  to  make  a  profit  even  with  record  low  natural  gas  prices.    

• MSRs  can  produce  electricity  that  is  very  competitive  in  a  free  market  and  can  produce  electricity  with  zero  airborne  pollutants.  

The  eGeneration  Foundation  is  working  to  form  an  alliance  to  develop  a  national  energy  plan,  promoting  the  next  generation  of  fuels  powered  by  Molten  Salt  Reactor  technology.    As  studies  and  analysis  of  this  promising  technology  are  widely  understood,  there  will  be  widespread  industry  support  for  commercializing  this  next  generation  process,  thus  providing  a  clear  pathway  to  prosperity.
