MEDICAL ISOTOPES A Pathway to Prosperity Volume 1 Issue 3 www.eGeneration.org MEDICAL ISOTOPE PRODUCTION What You Should Know: America has no significant domestic supply of Molybdenum99, a very important medical isotope used in 320,000 procedures in the U.S. per week. Molybdenum99 allows medical science to peer inside the body without exploratory surgery. This greatly reduces medical costs and allows for a quicker and a better diagnosis of patients. America imports Molybdenum99 from two reactors, one in Canada and one in the Netherlands. Both are nearing the end of their useful life. We have already had supply disruptions of Molybdenum99 since 2010 due to reactor maintenance and breakdown issues overseas. The current strategy of the United States is to produce Molybdenum99 from LowEnriched Uranium (LEU), which is very inefficient compared to producing Molybdenum99 from Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) HEU is a proliferation risk because it can be used to make nuclear weapons. Molten Salt Reactors do not produce HEU Molten Salt Reactors can produce Molybdenum99 during their normal course of operation, and do so hundreds of times more efficiently than current HEU and LEU processes. Molten Salt Reactors can also produce very rare isotopes such as Actinium 225 that are vital in research and treatment of the most egregious forms of cancer. The eGeneration Foundation is working to form an alliance to develop a national energy plan, promoting the next generation of fuels powered by Molten Salt Reactor technology. As studies and analysis of this promising technology become widely understood, there will be widespread industry support for commercializing this next generation process, thus providing a clear pathway to American economic prosperity. 1768 East 25 th Street Suite 301 Cleveland, OH 44114 216.367.0602 www.eGeneration.org The eGeneration Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational charity. MEDICAL ISOTOPE PRODUCTION What  You  Should  Know:

• America  has  no  significant  domestic  supply  of  Molybdenum-‐99,  a  very  important  medical  isotope  used  in  320,000  procedures  in  the  U.S.  per  week.
