YOKOHAMA National University's MissionWith a spirit cultivated and upheld since its founding, YNU is building a strong basis in research and education

on the world stage in the 21st century. Towards this end, YNU is PRACTICAL, responding the needs of

society that surrounds us;YNU is ADVANCED, actively promoting new endeavors and innovation with daring;

YNU is OPEN, widely opening our doors to all aspects of society; YNU is INTERNATIONAL, facilitating and

encouraging exchange from all over the world.

Introduction Yokohama National University (YNU) was established in 1949, merged from Yokohama Normal School (est. in 1876), Kanagawa Prefectural Training Institution for Teachers of Supplementary Vocational Education (est. in 1920), Yokohama Higher School of Commerce (est. in 1923) and Yokohama Higher School of Technology (est. in 1920). Currently, the university comprises four undergraduates (Education and Human Sciences, Economics, Business Administration, Engineering) and four graduate schools (Education, Social Sciences, Engineering, Environment and Information Sciences) and has developed into a university with more than 1,000 faculty members and 10,000 students. Since 2004, YNU has made a fresh start as a National University Corporation. Based on more than fifty years of history and tradition, YNU is highly internationalized, as it respects and strives to respond to the needs of society. The university is determined to provide effective knowledge to its students and administers research and education with the aim to develop into a university open to society and eager to welcome new challenges. YNU, located in the historically international city of Yokohama, has been highly dedicated to a global perspective and has concluded International Exchange Agreements with approximately 80 universities in 30 countries and regions. More than 750 international students from 60 countries are presently enrolled at YNU.

Facilities for International Students / ResearchersInternational Student Center This center provides international students with systematic instruction in the Japanese language and cultural adaptation and also offers counseling for international students on academic and daily life, and for Japanese students on studying abroad.

* JUNIOR YEAR OVERSEAS (JOY) PROGRAM In order to further promote the internationalization of the university, this program offers international students from partner universities the opportunity to take courses for up to a year from a wide-based curriculum ranging from engineering to liberal arts. While the primary language of instruction is English, students with sufficient Japanese language proficiency are also able to take courses taught in Japanese. This program also facilitates sending YNU students to our overseas partner universities.

Accommodations for International Students / Researchers YNU offers two dormitories for international students. The Foreign Student House is a dormitory for international students only, while both Japanese students and international students can use the Minesawa International House, getting the opportunity to exchange cultures through life at the dormitory. Accommodations for researchers who studies at YNU are also provided.

Among Fascinating Research ActivitiesCOE (Centers of Excellence) Program This program, supported by the Japanese government, strengthen and enhance the education and research functions of graduate schools, to foster highly creative young researchers who will go on to become world leaders in their respective fields through experiencing and practicing research of the highest world standard. YNU was selected to work for the new “GLOBAL COE PROGRAM” which are; “Innovative Integration between Medicine and Engineering Based on Information Communications Technology” led by Prof. Ryuji Kohno of the Faculty of Engineering and “Global Eco-Risk Management from Asian Viewpoints” led by Prof. Hiroyuki Matsuda of Faculty of Environment and Information Sciences. YNU was also selected to conduct two works under the previous COE Program. Those were; “Creation of Future Social Infrastructure Based on Information Telecommunication Technology” led by Prof. Ryuji Kohno and “Environmental Risk Management for Bio/Eco-Systems” lead by Prof. Kohei Urano of Faculty of Environment and Information Sciences.
