Cline-Bass House 804 Tucker McKinney, Collin County, Texas McKinney Multiple-Property Nomination

The Cline-Bass House i s being nominated to the National Register solely under Criterion B and i s not being considered for t h i s designation for i t s architectural significance (C r i t e r i o n C). Although the structure has strong associations with a man who played a very important role i n the local cotton industry, the house has been altered s i g n i f i c a n t l y over the years. The unusual configuration of the exterior i s not t y p i c a l of other houses i n the c i t y , and despite claims that portions were b u i l t before the C i v i l War, no exterior evidence remains to j u s t i f y a mid-nineteenth-century construction date. Instead, the house appears to be a ca. 1895, modified L-plan dwelling with a large two-story addition onto the f r o n t . Uncertainties surrounding the date of t h i s addition, as well as the shed dormers and six-over-six l i g h t windows, makes t h i s an altered example of an extremely common house-type i n McKinney. Because better i l l u s t r a t i o n s exist and are being considered for National Register d i s t i n c t i o n , t h i s structure i s not being nominated on i t s architectural merits.
